So now I'm a little confused. XD
I've wanted to get a wide angle lens shot in TS for some time now, but I always wound up with the wonky distortion. I always thought wide angle lenses only distorted as they got closer to the edge, I didn't realize the whole image was stretched! If that's the case, I may need to re-think some of my ideas. :P
In any case, it's a wonderful image, and the grass looks amazing. You must tell me how you got it to Render so quickly, because every time I try to render something with a poly-count that high, it takes several hours! |

Photographers used to differentiate between Wide Angle lenses. The distance between the outermost element of the lens and the film plane is called the focal length. A lense with a focal length of 35 to 50 mm would be called a wide angle lens because it's angle of view is wider than the human eye (which is equivalent to 50mm). The closer the focal length is to 50mm the less wide the angle and therefore the less degree of distortion with any distortion being more noticeable at the edges of the image.
Extra Wide Angle lenses have a focal length between 15 and 35 mm and are usually only used for special circumstances - for when one wishes to photograph a wide panorama or when one wishes to photograph a scene and have it sharply focussed from very close to the lens al the way to the far distance (such as in a photograph reproducing Prodigy's golf ball pic). Such a photograph would contain unmistakeable amounts of spherical distortion again increasing towards the edge of the image. Because of this higher degree of distortion many photographers traditionally scorned and avoided the use of these lenses considering them little more than gimmicks or special effects tools.
The third type of Wide Angle Lenses are generally known as 'Fisheye' lenses and are characterised by very short focal lengths (less than 15 mm) and extreme distortion in the resulting images.
This picture ilustrates the principles involved (I hope ;) ) ..... |

Chuckle! Where do you get your facts from dude? The 'Grumpy Old Mans Weekly'?
Fact: Wide angle lenses do not create barrel distortion. They create spherical distortion which increases toward the edges of the image.
For the sake of the reading pleasure of all involved with this community please aim to moderate your tone.
This is a very wonderful message, I wish I was as eloquent and as well written as you, I might have said similar... I know I tried to at least a dozen times :D
Only small quibble I have with your post is the description of a wide angle lens and it's distortion. I have only been serious about DSLR photography for a couple of years, so I do not pretend to have as much experience or knowledge as yourself, but wide angle lens do have barrel distortion, now the way that the description of it is written in the WIKI, I wonder if you oldtime photographers might have considered it spherical... excerpt from WIKI.
* barrel distortion, in which image magnification decreases with increasing distance from the optical axis. The apparent effect is that of an image which has been mapped around a sphere. Fisheye lenses, which take hemispherical views, produce this type of distortion as a result of a hemispherical scene being projected onto a flat surface.
* pincushion distortion, in which image magnification increases with increasing distance from the optical axis. The visible effect is that lines that do not go through the centre of the image are bowed inwards, towards the centre of the image. In photography, this aberration is often seen in older or low-end telephoto lenses.
And a picture for those that might be interested in the way that it effects your image
First picture is BArrel Distortion seen in Wide Angle Lens
Second Picture is PinCussion Distortion as seen in Telephoto Lens.
And by no means is this a message trying to pick apart your knowledge on the subject, or in any way taint that wonderful post of yours, just so much good info was posted about photography techniques and wide angle lens I wanted to post this only to clarify on a minor point.

@RichLevy - Hmmn! Seems you can teach an old dog new tricks. Barrel distortion and fisheye distortion- OK I can remember that. I learnt it as concave spherical distortion and convex spherical distortion.
Wideangle lenses bend light toward the central axis of the lens whereas pinhole lenses which have very small apertures, bend the light away from the central axis.
'Barrel' Distortion makes sense as a name though. As the film format is wider than it is high the distortion will be less apparent at top and bottom of the image as it is at the sides however in square format film (really showing my age now) such as 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 inches the distortion would be equal in all four directions - up, down, left and right.
Thanks for your kind words about my eloquence - my Dad was in the News Paper industry - hence my interest in both words and photography :D We got a LOT of encouragement to speak proper! ;)
Prodigy, sorry for stealing your thread dude! |

James... sorry but i think loose the point..
You are askme if i made that picture FROM a real ferris wheel..
Yes... i found a nice picture on google.. i can find right now.. but yes.. is from a real ferris wheel..
The only diference whas is not at night.. I choose make at night because when i render with daylight the render it whas very poor.. and i think.. why dont make at night??
And yes.. with post process i made light by light.. and im happy with the final image.. maybe are to brightness but i lost many hours to put these lights.. |

You are a master of room renders, and the grass looks great! :D
Impressed with how naturally you made it blend with the grass in the photo!
BTW: Great idea to have a thread with all your finished images !
For thoose without VRay(that can handle tons of geometry):
In the tutorial section at Maxwellrender they have an example of how to create realistic grass by taking photos of it with a piece of paper behind (for masking purposes) and then using a lot of alphamapped planes...something I would like to test in trueSpace.... but it will take some time before grass starts to grow in Sweden again ;)
(Since the method is rather common, it might already be described somewhere in this forum, just wanted to mention it.) |

Thanks!! Shike
Know what?? i do this method too.. and the render speed decrese a lot... incredible but Vray render with a huge speed if are toons of polygons than if you have few but with alpha and transparent shadows..
Thats why im using polygons.. :D |

With the rate at which you're churning out artwork, I think maybe your avatar could do with an update. :)

My imagination & sense of humour do seem to be quite closely linked. :)
The main reason I blocked out the original background was because it was quite badly JPEG'd. PSP's JPEG noise removal did an OK job on cleaning up the artifacts down the side of your face, but to get the background looking OK I would have had to clean it up manually, which would have taken too long, hence the gradient.
Changing the colour of the uniform was really quick as well, using PSP 11's colour changer. :) |

I've never used Corel Draw, but I do use Paint Shop Pro [that's what I was referring to with the abbreviation "PSP"], which is now owned/made by Corel. As for Photoshop... http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/smilies/puke.gif The only thing I use made by Adobe is the Flash plugin, & I wouldn't use that if there was a decent alternative. PSP can use most [don't know about all] Photoshop plugins.
and by the way.. im not 29.. im 28.. :D
Ah, sorry about that. :D |

Your realistic images (interior decoration, product presentations, advertisment material(?)) never cease to amaze me. You always seem to get the materials and lighting to be perfect. :D
For example the last DVDcover image, I wouldnt' be able to tell that it's CGI...if it wasn't for the fact that you posted it in this forum ;) |

I was just checking out your grass...I love it, Prodigy:) I never got into creating polyogonal grass (didn't know how to do it without spending a LOT of time) so I used alphas. Here's a "grassy" piece I did with either TS 5 or 6 called "It's All Fun and Games Till..." |
