Rareth, hey that's cool that you made my picture your desktop - I usually change my desktop regularly but this one has been there for some time now! It's there to inspire me to make my next picture even better! :D

As I've said before I intend to use this ship in other scenes in due course. I put too much effort into modeling her to only use her once in a dark twilight scene.

@Kena. Yes it is indeed a lighthouse and whilst somewhat anachronistic it is in fact accurately scaled. I went to considerable lengths to get the scale right and so detailed examination of the scene files will show the doors on the ship, the lighthouse and the house beside it are all the same height.

I've attached a render of the lighthouse model in an earlier scene plus a pic of the lighthouse (at Cape Reinga (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Reinga), New Zealands northern-most point) which I used as a reference for the model

ah... it just looked like it was smaller than the house. Maybe it is on a clift further away from the viewer. I think I remember seeing your lighthouse in other projects you have done. It's very well done, so I can see why you would use it again! :D

It's probably not clear at this distance but that house is three stories high - I probably should have used a smaller house! ;)

I've got a bit of a soft spot for my old lighthouse model - I've always been intrigued by lighthouses and I consider my model as one of the most successful of my earlier works. Plus it's good ecological practice to recycle those electrons!!!:D

It's not hard to see why you've got a soft spot for it - it's a great 'little' model, based on a really interesting little structure.

I guess I can understand Kena's confusion - most of the lighthouses I'm familiar with, in the UK, are substantially taller than that - usually at least 5-6 storeys high - and hence less 'squat' looking.

And like you say, a smaller building may have altered the perception a little.

But it's a great scene, I like it a lot. I've only ever tried fairly still water before and certainly haven't tried spray...

Thanks Nez. The history of New Zealand Lighthouses is quite interesting (well to me anyway) - many of the old ones were actually made in England and bought out here by ship. Also the shorter squat variety inevitably go high on a headland. We have a few like that left from 'the good ole days'.

We also still have a few of the more typical tall lighthouses built on low lying coastal land where the height becomes a factor. One day I want to model a tall version but it probably won't be soon.

@Prodigy - well made point, Sir! I did agonise a little over the brightness of the sun versus the muting effect of the sea mist. Your example pic shows I was right to wonder about it! Thanks for taking the time to illustrate your point so effectively.

I'm not sure whether the sun's too dim or it's reflections are too bright, but given that Roman tends to place lighting fairly high on his priorities, IIRC, that may have been what marked you down a few points, as it were.

@Madmouse: Thanks Steve, I appreciate the sentiment. I had great hopes for this picture to win me an upgrade to tS7.5 when it comes out but not winning is good too - it just provokes me to try harder next time :) .

Don't try for 7.5, try for proTeam before 7.5 comes out. That way you get 7.5 before it's released to everyone else, plus all the other benefits of proTeam membership.

I must say of all the images you have posted W!ZARD, this is my favorite yet. Great image.:D

I agree.

The good stuff:

- The sky

- The ship, especially the sails.

[Can't fault you at all on those - brilliant, like some oil painting in a gallery..]

- The bow spray is cool too.

The not-so-good-stuff:

- The difference in brightness between the sun & its reflection on the sea.

- Some of the sea [depicted as the green layer in your screenshot] doesn't look right, especially the part on the left of the ship. I'm not sure how to describe it, other than to say it reminds me of scenes from old movies that had some sort of sea/ocean scene done with models, where you could tell it was done with models because the water didn't look right. I'm not quite sure why, but it was almost as if the water itself didn't look to scale. I don't know how else to describe it, but that's the feeling I get when looking at those sections of your sea.

- Something about the cliffs bugs me. Not sure what, something to do with the shape I think.

Aside from those points, I have to reiterate, this is your best piece so far & certainly seems to capture the mood you were going for.

Hey Alien! How lovely to see your smiling avatar back amongst us! Thanks for the feedback too.

Not surprisingly, I agree with your analysis of the pros and cons of my picture. Your comments on the water scale are spot on - the distant water heightfields are copies of the nearer one scaled up in size and rotated. My bad. I should have remapped the UVs. By that time I was getting past the novelty of the picture and wanting to move on to something else. For the same reason the headlands are recycled from an earlier and could have benefitted from a little more work.

Well it's obvious that I can't sneak anything past you guys but as the old saying goes: the devil is in the details! LOLO:)
