I was just playing around with vRay... TS 7.5 beta, no lights, soft shadows, GI (1.3 first bounce, 1 second bounce).

I am curious why you are curious - what difference does it make? Puzzled by that question I must admit.

Heidi is a beta tester. That or pro-team is, of course, the only way he could have 7.5 beta.

Sorry Prodigy, I didn't mean to ignore your question. I was off feeding the horses and only just got back online.

I'm a member of ProTeam and a very minor contributor to beta testing.

I didn't use any lights at all. Just the first and second bounces of vRay's GI. Textures are applied to the objects for the colors.

Nice rendering but the wood texture on the shell looks poor (this is a wood material from the original Truespace library?).

Well, the question does sound insulting - since it makes no difference how they have the beta, asking sounds like "Hey you shouldn't have the beta, how come you have it?" - ie an accusation that something is not right.

It sounds that way because the answer to the question makes no difference otherwise - that is, I can't see why anyone would ask that question except to say "Are you valid? Are you cheating?"

So yes, it did actually seem a little insulting to me why someone would be asked that, which was why I asked my question.

You can be assured that we keep close control over who has access to the beta, and if someone posts images from it, then they have it for a legitimate reason :)

My wife says "That is gorgeous!" Heidi and I agree, the string of pearls' lustre is very beautifully captured

The wood is an African hardwood commonly on sale in London we have many bowls and boxes here made from that type of wood

Vray 1.5 upgrade is upcoming btw Heidi :)

These pearls are enchaning Heidi. The way you have casually draped them on the box also shows a real mastery of composition.

The whole scene reminds me of the beautiful poems of the german 19th century poet Eduard Mörike, who was a master in describing discreet objects in his room. Like an antique lamp on his desk.

I was really wondering how you created these iriscedent minty color effects. I have been looking intently at the pearls, they look faceted, but they are perfectly round, very intriguing! Really inspiring work, thanks for sharing it with us.

Thanks guys... I'm glad you like it. :)

The wood texture is wood4.tga in the TS texture library. I think I'm ok saying that since it's been in the library since 6.6, I think. I checked the original render, there's no pixelation, that's the look of the texture. The texture used for the irridescent look of the pearls is my own.

I took no offense at Prodigy's question. This is my third year as a Proteam member. I hadn't paid any attention to the title thingy under my user name. I like having access to all the video tutorials and downloads and especially appreciate the extra help when I need it. Not to mention the privilege of being able to play with the beta software. :)

I also take no offense at Tom's position of caution. We only recently got the go-ahead to start posting beta renders in the open forums so everyone, including me, is a little self-concious about it.

Thanks Burisman :) Here's the tileable texture I used for the pearls. From there is was a matter of tweaking the phong settings.

Prodigy, I am not trying to promote conflict. As a Caligari member, my role is to ensure users are properly protected on this board.

I saw a question that had no apparent possible benefit to you knowing the answer, and that sounded like an accusation, so I stepped in - I don't want people who post beta images to have to expect to be asked why they have the beta.

I asked in a polite manner, I didn't say when I asked that you were being insulting, I simply asked why you wanted to know. You could have said "Heidi is my friend, I didn't realise they are in proTeam or on the beta, I was just curious."

Instead though you chose to reply in an aggressive manner, to quote:

"

and whats the problem to ask to Heidi that?? Are something wrong??? or i broke any law?? or even i insults somebody???

"

And you never did answer my question. So again in a polite manner I stated that yes, I found your original question insulting. You could have answered first time around that you knew Heidi and were just curious, but you chose not to, so I then had to be straight with you and say I found it potentially insulting.

You have once again been insulting and aggressive in your reply to me - telling me I am drowning in a glass of water (I don't think anyone should be expected to answer why they have the beta, and I think that's an important issue for our customers to expect to be free from being asked to justify themselves, and not a trival thing as you imply with that comment - it is a users privacy about why they have the beta; and that Heidi is your friend, you could have answered, I don't have any idea who you are friends with and who you are not, and that would have answered my original question), and capitlalising my name again (which is shouting in internet terms) and "leave it in Irak" - whatever that means. What has Iraq to do with it, and how do you know my stance on the war there, and what would that have to do with this conversation anyway?

So, I do find your position, attitude and approach in this thread insulting and aggressive. As a Caligari member I will step up if I see such potential behavior being directed at someone in our community - and your reply could have avoided any further need for me to post had you answered "Just a friend of mine, and I was wondering" - I would have said "Fair enough!" and that would have been the end of it.

I am sorry to "hijack" this thread about an excellent and awesome piece of artwork, and I will now be taking this elsewhere by raising it with the moderator on the board, but I am sorry Prodigy, there really is no need for the tone and approach you have taken here.

HTH,

Tom

Heh, Tom, I think the motive behind his original question was alot closer to "If Heidi has access to the beta and is not labelled a beta tester or a pro-team member under her avatar, how did she manage to get it? Also, I wonder if it may be possible for me to get it using the same method!"

I don't think it was meant to be insulting at all. ^^

We're all just really excited!

Well that's the issue - people should not be asking how others got the beta. There could be many reasons why someone has the beta

1. Reviewer, and we have asked to use their work

2. Working on a major project as a partner

3. We have given them the beta to ask them to produce artwork

etc

Those reasons are exactly why people who post work from the beta should not be asked "Why do you have it?". Not to mention that someone might just not want to say if they spent money on proTeam, or were signed up for the beta.

This was not about Prodigy and Heidi, it's about the fact that someone who posts beta artwork should expect to NOT be asked publically on the forums to explain why they have it. In this instance, since Prodigy was friends with Heidi, he should have mailed privately and asked. If he wanted to know if there was another route he could get the beta by, then he should have mailed Caligari privately and asked.

Basically, I want our users to know they can post beta artwork and not expect to be asked "Well why do you have it?". I think that's intrusive. I want to nip that in the bud and make sure it does not happen again. While Heidi is free to answer the question, or say "I don't want to tell you" I do want to discourage these questions, for other users who may not want to find themselves suddenly asked why they have the beta.

And you know, a nice simple reply would have ended this early, instead of a lot of dramatic arm waving from Prodigy.

HTH,

Tom

I'm trying to say this as tentatively as I can, Prodigy, but it is important that you don't get too carried away, like you did earlier on this thread. Keep in mind that this is a moderated forum, and it is very possible for you, your email, and your IP Address to get banned from it.

I don't want you to take this rude, just as a warning, because I've seen it happen numerous times (to other members on a different forum).

As advice, I suggest that you tread lightly from now on, and make an apology too... It wouldn't be good for this to happen to you Prodigy, your a good asset to the TS community.

Also the title under the user name is user controlled from the User CP above.

Prodigy, you can make your title say "proTeam" if you want LOL, but I think "Prestidigitator" or "Prodigious Modeler" would be cooler considering the speed you churn out cool works. :D

No-one is going to get banned here, there is no worry about that! I would however like people to use a more pleasant tone with those who are carrying out official business - any moderation here will most likely be the removal of these posts (mine included naturally) and some request (if appropriate, this is up to the forum mods) about conduct, but certainly no "or you will be banned!" type approaches.

So this will just be (at worst) requests for being civil and having a pleasant tone, nothing to do with banning or restricting.

Tom I think your intent is cool but no one here was ever insulted. Also you made it clear to all the respect we must show to others is expected on this forum. If you ever feel like we are pushing the limits here we'll comply.
P.S. Switch from Caffeine to Samuel Adams it works wonders!!!;)

Yeah! Me neither! XD

Okay, I can understand your point now Tom, thanks for clearing it up. Heh, I might've done the same thing without realizing it's considered rude. ^^

I don't think Prodigy meant any harm, just as I wouldn't have.

And Prodigy, considering how much stress Tom and Caligari are under right now, I think we can all cut them a little slack. They still need our support, even though they're almost done! And in case "Cutting some slack" is an English specific Idiomatic expression (I know from personal experience how tough the language barrier can be to climb), what I mean by that is let's give Tom a break!

Sorry for all the animosity here, we're all a bit high strung. ^^
