Well I always thought that my Samuel L. Jackson model deserved some hair,

and with the release of TS7.5 I can finally give it to him.

(and it was a good excuse to play with the new tools to:))

I learnt a lot about the new hair tools along the way and managed to crash

TS several times in the process (one of which required a reinstall to fix:mad:)

But after a lot of swearing and trial and error I've finally got some results that

I'm pleased with, and hopefully next time round things will be a little easier.

When I posted my original 'Mace Windu (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=2133&highlight=mace+windu)' render. The main criticisms that I

received where that he had no eyelashes and he looked worried about something

so I've attempted to correct those crits in this render. I added some eyelashes

and altered his expression in 'Mudbox' which I'm trialing at the moment.

I hope you like the changes and my first attempt with TS7.5 hair.

But if not be careful what you say or I'll send Jules round and he'll:-

'.....strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger.....':D

Comments and crits please guys.

Steve.

P.S. now I really must stop playing with TS7.5 and get back to my devil mech.

Haha, nice hair Steve. Only criticism would be that his eyelashes look a bit too feminine.;) It may not be the eyelashes but the combination makes the eyes look feminine.

Very cool! What a difference it makes, huh?

Probably the thickness of the lashes, or the number of lashes - guylashes tend to be more sparse...and not mascara'd into tarantula eyes. :) Could it be Ru Paul doing his Sam Jackson impression?

Still an outstanding difference!

This one reminds me of something... Let me think... OH, YES!!
Who's the black private dick
That's a sex machine to all the chicks?
SHAFT!
Ya damn right!

Who is the man that would risk his neck
For his brother man?
SHAFT!
Can you dig it?

Who's the cat that won't cop out
When there's danger all about?
SHAFT!
Right On!

This one seems to be a blend of the old show and the new movie.

Woo! Loooooookin' good. If this isn't an advert for the spendidness of the new hair tools then there's no hope!

Only crit, as already covered, is the eylashes. Mascara or not, they're too short. Make each strand thinner and it's closer to natural. As is it looks like Betty Boop graffiti applied afterwards. Meant in the nicest possible way, of course. :)

Such a little niggle for an otherwise fantastic job.

For some reason when I saw it I thought Link from the Mod Squad... and

"I petty da foool" Mr. T...

Definitely front page worthy.

Thanks for the feedback and kind comments guys.

Here's an updated Mr. Jackson with longer, sparser & hopefully less feminine eyelashes.

Any better???

Steve, I just like it for the illustrative style it, and much of your work, has. My comments about realism were just an observation. I like this because it is a bit like a 3D version of those airbrush caricatures you see more than an attempt at photorealism.

If you were going for realism then I am sorry, but I really like this...:D

No offence was taken Paul. I never 'go for realism' I belong to the.. if you want realism then take a photo... school. I prefer to have a definite style to my work.

Is this a V-ray render? I can't remember if you have V-ray or not. Care to tell us a little bit about getting those lashes right? Eyelashes are something I always struggle with.

Well I'm glad this render is appreciated around here because the same cant be said for the people over at CG society. For reasons best know to themselves it was turned down for entry into their galleries????

Sorry steine but I'm doing my best to..'spread the word'

Is this a V-ray render? I can't remember if you have V-ray or not. Nope, good old lightworks. I have V-ray 1.0 but am still awaiting the promised patch to make it work with TS7.5

Care to tell us a little bit about getting those lashes right? Eyelashes are something I always struggle with. Apparently so do I ;) The lashes were just extra bits of geometry that were then textured with a transparency map to separate the lashes. It appears that the trick is getting the thickness/sparsity just right. HTH

Thanks guys

Steve

Sheer madness not getting picked for the CGSociety gallery. One of my earlier head attempts got picked and was nowhere near as good as this.

Often it is the lack of description that gets an item bounced or if you try to enter too many in one day...:(

Thanks Paul, I doesn't make much sense to me either. They accepted the mace windu version and I thought that was a much inferior piece.

It was the only image I've submitted in a while and had a reasonable description. I did originally have...' if you want to learn more about trueSpace then visit www.caligari.com' so maybe they didn't like that part:confused:

I have sent them an email asking for clarification but as of yet have heard nothing back and don't really expect to, to be honest.

I find the vetting process a little insulting. I know its to try to keep the dross out of the gallery (that you get at renderosity) but to reject it without any explanation doesn't really benefit me, my work or my opinion or CG society.

or is it just the black sheep of the family syndrome:mad:

MadMouse you always pull through with a challenge (Spreading the word about TS...thanks)

I looked at their gallery and then your artwork. I bet they were turned off about the TS promotion and not your Rendering.

Man I hate it when lesser lifeforms are condescending!!

Thanks for the input on the eyelashes - I thught you may have some secret that I didn't know about but it sounds like you do it the same way I do only better. <Shrug> I guess there's no point in trying to post my stuff at CGTalk! ;)

FWIW I resubmitted Mr. Jackson to CG society. This time I got a rather snotty email back telling me that....

'...unfinished heads are not allow in the gallery. If you wish to submit head models then please do so as a full bust. In future please read the gallery submission rules...'

I'm glad I don't have a full membership to CG Society as I'm seriously considering telling them to poke their gallery up their hairy Jackson!!!!!!

One good thing is that this kind of treatment only makes me appreciate the helpful, dedicated and pleasant people here at the forum and a Caligari.

What a load of old tosh...my head had a simple SDS shape to fake a sort of roll neck jumper so you couldn't see how 'unfinished' the head really was.

Either way, a real elitisit bunch over there at times...stick with what you know and stay here in the warm bosom of the caligari family...;)

That head's great. I don't understand why you got snubbed.

This (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=132&t=500034) one was allowed, and it doesn't even have hair.

Apparently you're not allowed to talk about truespace their either (link (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=2&t=494241)). Maybe Roman owes them money or something.;)

Cookepuss, hit the nail on the head with his/her description of trueSpace's History and Industries opinion of it.

Read what he says and then look at Tiles latest gripes here, or Spacekdets etc etc.

As a very long time user I have seen tons of frustration over unfinished features, bugs not fixed, odd behaviors etc to the point users have just left.

The good news (my feelings today and could change) are that Caligari got a wake up call and are trying to make things right. Mostly because they had to (old architecture) but also because they want to.

TS7 series is being built with user input. That is why it is critical that we submit bugs, impressions, and improvements to them using these forums. They can't possibly please us all but I think they are trying.

Edit:

Sorry after responding I noticed who's thread I was in. Anyone wishing to repond to the above please copy/ past to start a new thread...

MadMouse,

First add a bust to it and resubmit. If your real mad (mouse) add a devil's bust to it. If your not going back then attach a poser bust to it and send them that crap:)

P.S. It should be noted that bosoms may not necessarily be found on ALL the users here....(ME)....and Splinters speaks for his/her self:D

Hmmn. Sometimes I wish for a cg art forum that banned references to specific software so that the focus of discussion was the art rather than the method. Then I remember why the only forums I have desktop shortcuts to on all my PC's are the Caligari forums.

Mouse, I recommend just cropping your Jackson pic so that the neck extends beyond the edge of the frame - it's probably the disembodied floating head thing that's got their knickers knotted - but either way it still sounds like bigotry to me - "we don't allow that type in here". Sheesh, millions of years of human evolution and they still think elitism is a justifiable and good idea!

Really, would you rather drink at the posh toffee-nosed club or at your friendly cosy local pub?

Roman wants us to show off our work in other forums, and I think forums like CG talk is exactly what he means.

Did you try creating a WIP in progress thread, say that it was denied and ask what the community what things should be improved on it?
