Better get this one up before I'm done with the modeling. ;)
This is about 3 or 4 days worth of work. I started on the body first. Moved on to the head. Still need finish up the eyelids and the transition from nose to eye corner. Also the ears. I'm saving the limbs for last, because I still don't have a good feel for arms and legs yet.
12559
Once I get the body mesh done, I'll add the clothing details. Planning to do a vest, toolbelt, shorts, oversized gloves and boots, goggles, and a bandanna tied around the arm as well as one tying the braid for the hair. The hair will be braided with the braid hung over the left shoulder.
Soon as I get some decent concept sketches I'll post them as well.
Did I hear there was another extension coming? :p |

LOL, thanks Wizard! :D
Not a lot of "character" in this character yet. I'm hoping the some of the concept will start to take more shape when I move on to the clothing and accessories. I'm trying for an engineer/tinkerer/inventor character.
Lot of firsts for me in this design so we'll have to see how it comes together. Fortunately the UV mapping will be quick with UV Layout. Otherwise it would take me weeks to UV map something this ambitious. |

Great work Jack, I'm looking forward to seeing it progress.
BTW if you are going to use UVlayout how are you generating the .obj files from your TS model? I'm looking forward to you next courses in organic modeling as the free one was great, very useful.

Thanks Jamworks :)
Model side LUUV plugin exports in obj format and reads into UV Layout no probs. |

See following thread as to whether you want another extension or not:
http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showpost.php?p=68609&postcount=44
It's been going a while now and need to let someone else take the helm for a while...
I know you've only just got going, but I gather you're caught up inquite a lot of other things too. Hope you finish her off anyway when you have some time, sounded interesting. |

With the final deadline coming up it's looking to be cram time.
Here's the eye loops added in, and some general clean up:

I'm still not quite happy with the outer corners, but it's time to move on, gotta get the ears roughed in. |

Roughed out the outline for the ear. Need to pull out photo references to cut out the interior.
Here's a shot of the progress:

Gonna call it a night and work on the inner part of the ear after I sleep.
I made the nose somewhat smaller and adjusted the cheek flows to a more neutral position. Also finished up the forehead and top of the head. Here's the update:

Looking good Jack. Lovely clean lines. I will certainly print these pics out and have them by me when I move on to trying something like this. |

Working on the hair, bandana, eyes, and goggles next, that way since I'm likely going to run out of time, I'll be able to at least to a head shot beauty render... |

Started working on the goggles, but going to have to get some sleep. :( Guess I'm getting to old for the allnighter thing... *sigh*
On the cool side of things, I did find out while searching for goggle reference images that there's a whole active sub culture around this inventor gadget type stuff, called "Steampunk". Pretty cool stuff and definitely worth a google.
Will try and squeeze in some work later tonight to hopefully get enough done to post a render. |

Looking really good Jack, will definitely be adding this to my reference collection for when I get brave enough to try a human head/figure... wouldn't know where to start....
I've come across the term steampunk before and was guessing that you might be heading that way - some of W!zard's stuff might be considered along those lines too I guess. Look forward to seeing what you come up with - even if we have to wait 'til after the deadline for the completed model...;)
Hope you manage to get the headshot done at least - curious to see what stlye of render you're going for - maybe toon-ish so as not having to enter the minefield of photorealism? |

Yeah I'm familiar with 'Steampunk' and it's not too much of a stretch from there to some of my work. I think that my stuff is probably too fantastical and whimsical to qualify as true Steampunk which has a more gritty edge to it.
Jack, I'm hoping you'll keep developing this character - not only are your WIP pics a mini tutorial I'm also really keen to see the finished item. It's looking superb so far. |

The head is lookin great Jack. Pretty efficient lines. And I know what you mean about the all nighter thing. Tried it myself last night but ran out of steam, and got all punked out in the end :-)
Que: if it'll be only a beauty render, why not work the bandanna and even the glasses into the face mesh, saving time and effort, or is that what you'll be doing? |

Suppose I could do it that way but I'm planning to put the goggles on the forehead, and the bandanna (used to shield the mouth during flight) will just be hanging loosely around the neck.
I've got a great reference image for the goggles, so hopefully should be able to knock those out in an hour or two. But the hair is going to take some work.... Let's hope that Nez's doesn't get a chance to put the voting up until tomorrow some time. :o
@Prodigy: lol, you should've seen me as a heavy metal listening teen with hair down to my waist... Ah, the 80's and early 90s...
@Wizard: Thanks! I'm thinking about just putting a post in that says "Progress at time of challenge completion" so that people know what to vote on and I can keep working without having to create a new thread. |

Decided to get as much of the hair done as I could before deadline. So here's the final as of the deadline:

I'll keep working on it, but the image above is probably the one that should be used for judging. |

Looking great Jack - would be interested to see a bit more on how you've shaped the hair at some point, and can't wait to see the extra goggles, clothes, textures, etc etc! So hope you will carry on at some point.
Feel very guilty to say time's up as far as the poll's concerned...:( But the poll is now up.... good luck! |

Thanks Nez. I spent too much time doing research and not enough time modeling. ;) Don't feel bad. You have to call these contests eventually and it's a shame we didn't get more entries for such a good topic. Something we may want to try in the future is to make the challenges more specific in regards to topic. Maybe even provide reference material for the contest.
Gonna take a break for now (and get some sleep :p), but I'll work on it some more during the week. Could be portfolio material when I get it done. |
