A distant star surrounded by a belt of debris and dust. Slowly tumbling asteroids cast long shadows through the dust feild. Is this a planet that never quite formed? Or perhaps, more sinisterly, the remains of a planet that was destroyed in some unkown and ancient cataclysm?
Man has come to this far place in search of answers. On the largest asteroid, a roughly spherical body with enough mass to possess a weak gravity, a research mining base has been built beside an old impact crater.
A supply shuttle drifts in towards the short low G runway as a ground transport returns from a survey operation.
********
A couple of the objects here were modelled with tS 6.6 and subsequently remodelled and modified with tS 7.51 - all other models made with tS 7.51 except the terrain which was made with MojoWorld 3 Pro using Calyxa's excellent Crater tutorial.
The sky; background starfeild made with Celestia, asteroids and volumetric lighting made with tS 7.51 and used as background shader.
Light flares and copyright notice added with tS 7.51 - Irfanview for resizing and JPG conversion.
Check out the bigger version in my Rendo Gallery (link in sig below) to see the details better.
I hope you all enjoy this and please leave a comment or two. |

Great picture. I like the lighting effects and the overall mood of the scene. The hi-res version definitely does the image justice. This would make a good book cover. |

On a serious note:
I like how you handled the dusty atmosphere. Cool how you build up the scenario with a back story. Real nice work...again!
On a not so serious note:

Wow, another great image W!zard (you're so productive! :D )
I really like the way you use several programmes together to build up scenes like this and I think this is one of the most successful combinations I've seen yet, with a really nice balance between the detail, the landscaping and lighting etc, plus an interesting composition too.
Really nice job! |

Ahhhh...but the real question is:
Will Roman be able to resist the allure of the orange fog?
Tune in next month when the gallery is revealed for the exciting answer! |

Thank you all for the supportive comments.
@Jack Edwards - My pictures 'tell a story' because I'm a failed writer! I'm a compulsive reader and have a range of award winning novels all written in my head - the only problem is when I write them out they seem so ... amateur might be a good word! Fortunately, thanks to trueSpace and the support of the good folk here and at Caligari I'm able to show at least something of the stories in my head through these pictures.
@Transient - "This would make a good book cover" - thanks Mt T. I'll take that as a great compliment - and often it's reading good scifi or fantasy books that trigger an idea for a picture.
@Steinie - "My neck hurts" - I LOLed at this! I had two cameras in this scene , one on an even keel for placing the models and so on and the other on the angle you see in the picture - when using the second camera I often found myself sitting with my head to one side - s'funny how accustomed we are to seeing horizontal horizons.
@Nez - thanks mate but I'm actualy not as productive as I could be if my health were a little better! The secret is that I have a very supportive partner (she's also my chief artistic advisor - you guys don't get to see a finished picture till she's OK'ed it!). She will often bring my dinner in to me so I can eat and model at the same time! What a woman!
@Madmouse - thanks for the banana buddy!;)
@3dvd - MacDonalds? I'm trying to picture an advanced civilisation here - hopefully one that has advanced beyond over-priced and undernourishing fast food - (well except for pizza that is;) ).
@jwiniker - thanks for the kind comment Jeff and welcome to the forum.
@SteveBe - thanks mate.
@Spacekdet - "Will Roman be able to resist the allure of the orange fog?" Mwa hahaha!! You've uncovered my secret plan!! :D |

Thanks BT, DD and Dragneye.
Re writing a short paper - it's hard to know what folks would be interested to read. Mostly it's a matter of perseverance I think - I just keep plugging away until I've got a result I like.
I've always had a vivid imagination and a strong pictorial sense. My father was and still a very keen photographer and photography has been a great interest for me. Additionally I have some background in painting and have done a series of evening classes on figure painting. I'm also a compulsive doodler! Combine that with a love of escapist fantasy and scifi, mix it all up in trueSpace (easily my favourite app - I just love the interface and the results I can achieve with it) and add a generous dose of time (I have ample free time to pursue my interests) and there you have it.
One vital ingredient I should also mention is the support, inspiration help and encouragement I receive from the good folks on these forums.
If anyone wants to know how I've done something specific I'm always happy to provide further details...... |
