Those of you who've seen my animations know that a dragons egg is involved - It's probably not that big a spoiler to say that the egg will hatch which has left me in the position of needing to make a dragon.

I thought I'd post some WIP shots here for your feedback and include a request. Normally I don't have too much difficulty dreaming up character names but I'm having a mental block over what to call him - so if you've got any suggestions for a good dragons name lets hear them!!

Good looking dragon there W!Z.

I like the more colorful version.

Is he/she going to have wings?

I cant say I envy you the task of rigging it.

As for names....... what about NAGROD or NOGARD both anagrams of DRAGON.

Good work Stephen I'm really looking forward to the next installment.

Looks good :)

One of the disadvantages of planar mapping is good to see at the feet though. The front and rear of the feet shows very visible disortions. You should really dive into unwrapping ;)

As for the name, what about Raggy or Shoosh?

Thanks Steve. Yeah the more colourful one is the one I'm using - the previous one had a placeholder texture. I've just spent the last week giving myself a crash course in UV mapping workspace style and the coloured version is the result of that.

Yes he's going to have wings, I'm modelling them as I speak.

Names - Oooh I like NAGROD - that has a nice dragonny ring to it. It also fits with an as-yet-unrevealed theme using anagrammatic names (the Airship pilot Captain Omen is an anagram of Captain Nemo.

Rigging - Yeah.... Well I do like to set myself a challenge. I figure if I can get 4 legs, two wings a neck and a tail successfully rigged with usable locks and handles I should have learned a lot about rigging.

And given that I wouldn't hold my breath for the next instalment - although I've been considering an interim chapter to fill out the back story and I'll be possibly working on that when I get stuck or sick of the sight of the dragon!

They're good names too - Shoosh has a good sound to it.

As far as unwrapping goes I actually did exactly that and went to some lengths to minimise the distortions. I unwrapped the dragon using Roadkill but as this was my first attempt I may not have done it in the most effective way. I did the unwrapping in Roadkill and used tS's UV editor to tweak the UVs. As you've noticed I came a little unstuck around the feet and the tops of the legs - still, a good learning experience for me.

Lagmite, Chimbly,

DranogonarD, BelazaleB (these two exhibit a sort of shuffled palindrome pattern I came up with a few years ago.. used it for title of my game group

nereveren studios.

looks kind of cool when you also reverse the letters from the backwards part of the name (seems to work best with 5-letter words, and placing a consonant at the middle - shared by both the forward and backward versions)

Cool dragon! I like the red texture as well.

Hmm a name, how about...

Hatch
Hatchsly
Brimstone
Phobic
Fartsly(I don't give a toot if you give a bean about that name.) :D
Luong Zhu (Chinese for Dragon Lord)
Miser

Something is just not right about this head...

It looks like a cross between a bird and an amphibian. It seems to be a combination of your mapping and the shape of the mouth.

Other than that, it's obviously much better than I could ever do at this point.

LOL - some excellent dragon names there - now I'm spoilt for choice :D

I really like 'snuffles' although it's a little 'cute' for the story - like Terry Pratchetts Death character riding a horse called Binky!

I like Luong Zhu (Chinese for Dragon Lord) too - although my dragon is not an Oriental style. I have always wanted to build an oriental dragon though.

Kena - I'm not sure what's 'not right' with his head - a cross between a bird and an amphibian is exactly the look I wanted. I want a critter that is obviously a dragon but also one that doesn't look like a dragon you've seen before.

Thanks to all who've commented - I'll post more developments when they happen....

Pulled an all-nighter waiting for the Animators meeting which started at 7 AM Sunday morning local time. While waiting for the fun to begin I made some wings for my dragon. A few more details required - toe claws, eyelids and so on and he's about ready to start rigging.

Here's the wings...

WOW!!! What a fantastic dragon Wizard. And those wings, they are just incredible. Beautiful work. My only crit would be that compared to all the detail you have placed on the head and wings, the tail is starting to look a bit plain by comparison. Perhaps something like the pic below might remedy that. Can't wait to see this baby animated. Keep up the good work.

Ahhhh... thar ya go! NICE dragon W!ZARD! Love the texture.

Seems a bit lean for a dragon though; must be lean times since eatin humans and such is illegal now a days. Anyway, as for names, don't know why but my first thought was Dimples, lol, - ok, if he breaths fire, how about Sir Charbreath, or Charbritt, or... Mr Spitts :-) - not as cute as the other suggestions, but maybe variety will excite your own grey cells. Great work.

Thank you all - I'm glad you like my dragon. I was quite pleased with the way the wings came out. In fact I'm pretty pleased with the whole thing so far. This is a great testament to Jacks free Organic Modeling course too - I couldn't have got this far without the knowledge I picked up from that.

This is also a whole step upward in my knowledge of organic UV's too - there are still a few features that aren't quite as good as I'd like but I've learned a lot in the meantime.

@3dfrog - yes it's all realtime, all modeled in workspace - the textures were hand painted in the GIMP and the only other part of the process was unwrapping the UV's using Roadkill - once unwrapped the rest of the UV editing was done in tS workspace.

And, just for the record, I did not use the Model side at all and I did not experience a single crash during the entire construction to date.

@Breech Block - good call on the tail - I should have thought of that myself!

@Dragneye - yeah he is a bit skinny maybe - a bit like me when I was younger ;). I wanted to add a snakelike vibe to this guy which will hopefully come out in the eventual animation. Also remember he's very new, literally a baby just out of the egg, so he's not yet had chance to eat herds of cows or bus-loads of commuting office workers! :).

Re the name - I'm not yet decided what to call him so keep the suggestions rolling in. I'm considering giving him a whole bunch of names in traditional Tolkien fashion so the more suggestions the better.:D

This is looking great W!zard - the wings in particular look excellent and I like the interesting colouring and the avian influence. Made me think a bit of hypothetical pictures of Archaeoptrix (or however it's spelt) - the bird/dinosaur 'transitional' creature....

I'm really hoping that I can actually get to see your animations at some point as there's no way I can download files of that size at work and have no modem at home - hoping to borrow my mum's broadband sometime soon....:D

edit - and I always liked Norbert as a dragon name! (good old Pratchett) but a bit cutesy I admit... although there's something fun about using totally non-traditional names for something like this - perhaps Bob?!

Cheers Nez - 'Norbert' - isn't that Hagrids dragon from Harry Potter? Like the 3 headed Cerberus dog called Fluffy :D

I always thought the Archeopterix was actually real - they have fossils of it - and actually I did think of that - I contemplated giving the dragon some clumps of feathers using Parvas grass tutorial but the polycount is getting too high now.

I also have a cartoon buzzard creature that I've been drawing since highschool that has influenced the dragon too.

Bob? ("Strange chap that Bob!" - obscure Blackadder quote :D). My brother's name is Bob and - somewhat inevitably - he's a builder! He gets enough ribbing as it is without me adding to it by naming my dragon after him!! I thought about 'Bruce' for a while but it lacks a certain majesty that Im looking for!

Ooops - you might be right about Norbert - there was a 'baby' dragon character in the Pratchett stories (owned by Vimes and Lady Sybil) but I can't remember the name if it wasn't Norbert - will have to see if it's in one of the books I have...

I wasn't suggesting Archaeopterix wasn't real - just that some of the drawings etc where they have tried to illustrate what a non-fossil version might have looked like are hypothetical.... (like us not knowing what colour dinosaur 'skin' should be)

I was thinking Steinie may or may not be too keen on you using Bob too! For some more serious name suggestions: Scarrador, Moonfang, Terraclaw - or you could try something with some Celtic derivation...

Oooh! I like Moonfang - that goes into the favourites list. In fact I like it so much that, even I don't use it for the Dragon I might try it for one of the other upcoming characters! Scarrador is good too. (I think I know his brother, Corridor :D)
