This is a case of staring at something until your brain goes numb. I'm calling it finished on that basis.

Any ideas on how to make this better? The finished presentation is going to scale down to color, 2 column wide print.

Looks like a usb flash drive to me. I keep one in my pocket at all times, not that particular kind. Nice model. I think some kind of setting and a little hdri as splinters suggests and you could get a good photoreal render.

Yep, the gold ball is the only off note... needs a little hmm... diffusion map, reflection map...tiny bump...something. It's too perfect.
The shock cord looks good, natural curves.
Maybe it's the lack of grounding shadows?

Looks quite nice to me.

Shadows would be good and if that's not the background you are going to use, I would use a background gradient so to highlight the product.

The ball does appear to be too perfect, but plastic in real life can look that way too.

I agree with Splinters, the shiny surfaces need something to reflect even if it's not shown in the image. You can set the HDRI to not show in the background. Another option would be to have an image on a half sphere or planes behind the camera that have an image for the objects to reflect. This is the problem with the plastic sphere. It looks like it's supposed to be shiny the way it is "reflecting" the light sources, but there's no other reflections. The thing to remember is that specular is just faked bright reflections.

The string looks good.

I agree about shadows. It might be worth doing a GI or IBL type render with the classic white display plane that curves up behind the object, to composite with another version that has the plane set to reflective. That way you can get both the cool wet reflection look and still have your shadows and GI. :)

Does the render of the object need to be composited with anything else or is it a standalone image?

I have that same flash drive, and you've done a very nice job on capturing the details, right down to the circuit board inside. The silvery material of the case is spot on. I don't believe the ball on the cord is supposed to be metal, right? It looks like plastic to me. My drive doesn't have that though, it just has one of those quick-release plastic clips that attaches to a larger strap. I'd say the only thing you might want to add is some shadows on the ground, or render some alternate lighting setups. Overall, nicely done.

Agree about the shiny ball, the pen drive looks a bit "perfect" but looks cool :)

Suggestion -

** add a bit of reflection to the shiny ball

** Hdri can be cool, but if you don't have 7.5 you can use "envoirament map" shader to add these kind of effect to your shiny ball for example.

** Add a floor or add a drop shadow in post production (Corel or Adobe) (the background needs something)

** Add DOF (deep of field) can be a very cool effect to your image.

Good work!

Thanks, everyone! This is some great input.

The "gold ball" is a bit off key. It seems to capture the eye more than it should. Definite tweaking here. It's supposed to be plactic, but this must be too plastic.

I'll experiment with HDRI, shadows, and DOF as well. Then I'll give the client some different iterations to choose from.

If anything else comes to mind, I would appreciate hearing it. I have a week before deadline so there is still some "wiggle room".

Thanks again! :)

Nice image there but perhaps putting it into someone else's thread about a USB pen is not the best idea for getting unique crit?

As for animations...never touch them...;)

Hi Manxie,

It all depends on the compression codec you plan to use. I'm finding that WMV gives better compression while maintaining good image quality and user compatibility.

The other good codecs will require your users to download and install Direct Show filters:
Xvid
x264

You could also convert your avi's to Flash files, which it the method that most websites seem to use.

Might be worth starting a new thread on this since I'm sure users have a lot of different opinions about different codecs and it would be a useful discussion for the community.

Just go to the category you want i.e. tech forum, image gallery etc. and choose New Thread from the top there....:D

Hope I didn't seem rude but people who have seen this thread before might not visit and therefore miss your question...
