Well here's the finished renders.
I hope that you aren't too disappointed with my choice of background. I've never been very big on full scenes, if you think back through my back catalogue there are precious few.
I wanted something simple to focus the eye on the troll himself and I rather liked the symbolism of the troll astride the map of middle earth in the shadow of mount doom.
The original concept was to make a LOTR troll for Saruman the white wizard, hence the white hand on his shield. Although Saruman's trolls where never seen in the films or mentioned in the books I figured that if I was Saruman I'd be damn sure that I had at least one of these guys around for close protection.
A big thank you to everyone who commented, constructively criticised or just plain encouraged me on this project. Without your support I don't think I'd ever finish one of my projects.

Comment and crits please guys

Wow, i don't think i can use any superlative for the Troll that hasn't been used already (amazing, brilliant, outstanding, magnificent to name a few), but the back ground in the bottom one is really effective, i love the way mount doom is looming over his shoulder.
P.S.

MadMouse !
I like it much. Modeling, texturing rendering and pose but one critic is alowed ?
The eyes looks a bit dry. The eyes have no glossyness or reflection or what ever makes eyes real.
excuse my poor english. |

Who would have thought such an ugly dude would get such a beautiful treatment! Well done Steve.
I know you're not keen on complete scenes and I had my fingers crossed you would treat us all to a full-on battle scene with this guy - but your map of Middle Earth works a treat.
Nice to see the trusty old LW renderer used so well too.

Brilliant work as always Steve! You're modeling and texturing is top notch! The only comment I would make is that it would be nice to see something in the image that gives a clue to the scale of the troll. He kind of looks small to me, especially in the second image. If there were some other objects in the scene to show off his truly massive size, he would look a bit more intimidating I think.
I'm really nitpicking there though. It really is an incredible piece of work! :D   |

Mmmm, some small figures trying to lash him with ropes would be excellent.
But Steve never revisits stuff once it is complete...:( |

The one without background is again: Excellent for showcasing your modelling/texturing skills! My eyes are starting to dry up from staring at it for too long! :D
The one with the background: Just brilliant! Would make an excellent movie poster! (really like the fact that you added som "Mount doom"-lighting for the render, makes it blend into the scene nicely!) |

Naturally I agree with everyone else - a fantastic job MadMouse, simply amazing.
I guess Caligari need to work on their modelling tools to get masters like you and Parva to actually do more of the actual modelling in TS rather than Silo! :D
Stunning texturing as usual, and really like the map background - very effective. Would be cool to see him in a gloomy cave or something too... |

Good point Nez. While tS is my program of choice, and I am no modelling master, if these 'masters' have to rely on other programs to complete their modelling then bring it back to tS for texture/lighting/render etc. there must be something 'lacking' in tS.
However, I have every hope that Caligari will bring a full modelling toolset soon and there will be no need to use another program (unless you want to!) |

Many thanks Guys, Its a response like this that makes all the long hours pushing pixels around worth the effort.
This is your best work yet Steve.
excellent work and probably your best stuff to date Steve...and that is how we keep getting better...
WOW thanks guys, this is the highest praise you could give. I always strive to make each render better than the last and to hear that I've achieved this means a lot to me.
The eyes looks a bit dry. The eyes have no glossyness or reflection or what ever makes eyes real. Thanks for the crit. The eyes do have refection in them, but they got a little lost in the resizing process :o
He kind of looks small to me WOW you must be huge Dele  seriously though, its a fair comment. I did try a lower camera angle to emphasise his size but then you lost sight of a lot of the texture work (and stevie like textures:D)
But Steve never revisits stuff once it is complete...He he, Paul knows me so well, its like being married  I'll never say never but yes that is one of my rules:- never recycle, never revisit. push on and learn more :D
and I am no modelling master Hey buddy your no slouch, and I'd swap a pound of modeling skill for a pound of your lighting and composition skills anyday.;)
if these 'masters' have to rely on other programs to complete their modelling then bring it back to tS for texture/lighting/render etc. there must be something 'lacking' in tS.
To be honest I did very little that couldn't of been done in TS. I just prefer Silo as my modeler of choice. I think its a jack of all trades, master of none thing. TS can do many many things very well. Silo is a modeler and a modeler alone so it's no surprise that it does this a little better. Oh and its very fast :D
Thanks again guys, as always you make a tried old CG artist blush and beam with pride at the same time. :o:D
next stop..... the monthly galleries.;)

Very masterfully executed modeling, texturing and rendering, Steve. A feast for the eye in terms of details and examplary use of textures.
For completeness of execution and artistry, of all your work to-date, my favourite is still "You light up my life" (http://www.madmousedesign.co.uk/webpages/PageBULBS).
Just out of curiosity, can you elaborate on what modeling features in silo that you do not have in trueSpace? I had always thought (naively?) that trueSpace had all the "standard" modeling tools one would need... |

of all your work to-date, my favourite is still "You light up my life" Yep, I still have a soft spot for that one to.
can you elaborate on what modeling features in silo that you do not have in trueSpace? As I said in my last post, I could of done this in TS I just find that Silo fits my style and work-flow better when doing organic modeling. I don't want to get too involved in singing silo's praises as it goes against the rules of this forum for promoting other software. Sorry :o
Thanks again guys
