Continuing my (probably blasphemous) habit of occasionally rendering my trueSpace models in Vue (apologies to any purists out there but I subscribe to the 'if it works, use it' philosophy;)).....

Here we see a flight of Gremlin Class AG Shuttles escorting a Viper Class Extra-planetary landing craft to a nearby Spaceport landing field.

All the background city buildings are freebies from the net, some tweaked and retextured some used 'as is'.

The two bridges and the two different vehicle types were made by me in trueSpace.

The picture takes advantage of Vue 6's awesome 'Spectral Atmosphere' and GI lighting.

This is not really meant as a 'serious' work - if it was I would not have used freebie models - I made it as a bit of light relief from my ongoing animation project (coming soon!). Hope ya'll enjoy it and please feel free to compliment, comment of critique it as you see fit.

Thanks

WZRD

(PS - I'll post a bigger version in my Rendo Gallery - link is in my sig below)

I'm rather pleased to announce this picture has been selected to be featured in 'Science Fiction Weekly', the online publication of the SCI FI Channel. They publish news, reviews and original artwork from the world of SF on the SCI FI Channel's Web site (http://www.scifiweekly.com). My picture will be displayed in the Newsletter for a week commencing Monday, June 9 and after that will be permanently displayed in their online gallery.

What a fantastic image! I love the models\textures and as you mentioned, the lighting really does look quite spectacular. What I also like is the attention to small details such as the green lights on in the near, pyramid shaped building, which just helps bring the image that bit more to life. Great work and I can't wait to see your animation project.

Looks great Wiz! You're work has improved greatly since you got the new monitors, and you always amaze me with how much you are able to reuse models in your scenes! :D

Really nice image.

Love those ships made in TS ;)

I really don't care in wich application one does what but I do care for an explanation of it like you did here, that's very good and don't leave any doubt.

Then art is art...

Have you yet printed some of your images out to posters and hanged them around your room were you do all this!? otherwise do it before I do it ;)

Keep up all the good work Wiz!

I love the textures and detail you put on your planes, Wizard.

The structure of the plane is probably not winning a prize for aerodynamics :) but this a picture of a time when energy problems have been solved completely. A fantastic picture for sure.

Vue 6 is on my PC but I have done little with it. Too bad. But first I have to learn organic modelling in WS with Jack's great course!

Another great 'vue' :D W!ZARD. Took another look at your other pics, and must praise you on how you continuously are able to create a beautiful, and many times breath-taking atmosphere in your works. Bravo.

I so much enjoy your images W!Z - I particularly like those ships but you are right you can get a wonderful effect with Vue 6 ..

I had bought Vue 5 Infinite hope to do wonderful things, but found I had no clue how to use it properly.. now it's move beyond that version, is even better and still no clue.. but wonderful to see that clearly .. you can put it to good use!

Always a pleasure, W!Z

Well thank you all very much for the lovely feedback:D

@Madmouse - "reminds me of some of the planet fly overs in the latest starwars series." Now you're being spooky!;) That was exactly what was in the back of my mind with this and directly influenced the decision to use shiny metallic finishes on the ships. I even played with a low lying cloud deck with the buildings poking through but thought that was just a tad too derivative!

@Ambrose - "I really don't care in wich application one does what but I do care for an explanation of it like you did here, that's very good and don't leave any doubt.

Then art is art...

Thanks Ambrose - I'm with you on this matter - I always enjoy a bit of technical insight into how the picture was created so I like to give some of that info about my own. And yes, I have LOTS of my art on the walls, prints of my 3d work, prints of some of my photography and a selection of my paintings too. We're rapidly running out of wall space:D.

If you should wish to print any of my pictures for yourself let me know and I can email you the highest resolution versions I have for the best quality printing.

@Georg - "The structure of the plane is probably not winning a prize for aerodynamics" Both vehicles started off as spaceships where aerodynamics weren't relevant, but then ended up with wings (no use in space;)). Now I just tell myself the planes are surrounded by energy force-fields that are invisible yet aerodynamic - after all this is science fiction :D

@Dragneye - "you continuously are able to create a beautiful, and many times breath-taking atmosphere in your works" Thank you. I'm the son of a keen photographer and I'm a keen photographer myself - I always aim for a photographic sense (as opposed to photorealism) in my pictures. This always effects the composition and POV etc. The real power of trueSpace and 3d art for me is in it's ability to take 'photos' of imaginary scenes.

@Butterpaw and Georg - Re Vue, I'm a massive fan of this program and I found it very simple to use. It's not really much use as a modelling app but it's brilliant for it's great atmospherics and vegetation. Used in conjunction with trueSpace models and the LUUV plugin you can get the best of both worlds.

Here's another example I whipped up yesterday, called Witch Hill. The birds and the Witch figure are all trueSpace, the trees are edited (and therefore unique) using Vue's Botannica module.

My 'secret' for using Vue is to utilise the vast array of preset options (for vegetation, atmospheres, clouds and materials etc) and tweak the settings to create my own unique version of the preset. This is also an excellent way to learn how to use Vue.

Beautiful artwork with the trees, You will be pleased to hear that I have been playing with Vue yesterday. It certainly is a nice program, although I have some trouble positioning the objects. Have to use the interface more, I guess.

I like Witch Hill a lot. It would be awesome if you could animate this scene someday. (a camera sweeps by the Witch while the birds do their thing, clouds billow, branches sway....) I'm a sucker for atmospheric shots.

Ah you haf uncovered my eevil plan! (spoken with spoken with hokey Russion spy accent!).

Actually, appearances to the contrary I'm not secretly in the pay of Eon-software :D - although of course I'm happy to accept a cheque from anyone!!

If you've got Vue Esprit (here I go again!!) you probably wont regret it but you may also want to think about getting the added modules that upgrade Vue Esprit to Vue Pro Studio. The Botannica module allows you to edit your own plants and is brilliantly easy to use and the other modules are all good too. What w while they are bound to come up with a special deal.

Also if you've now got Vue, Caligari have a great tutorial for sale showing how to use tS and Vue together ;) (I forget who did the tut...:D)

Ah yes, I am proteam so I get to see your course, I will check it out today. I just got my vue download link this morning after staying up all night working on the monster. I aint tired but that may change.

I'll have to wait for a deal to upgrade, i just been playing with it and i want to edit stuff! They gave me free 15 dollar credit to cornucoppia for registering, that was cool because I want some trees.

Along with it's awesome landscape features and other bells and whistles Vue is very much marketed at hose who buy much of their content rather than model it themselves - the $15.00 credit at Cornucopia3d.com is a nice bonus but unfortunately trees are not eligible for voucher purchase. There's still an abundance of goodies that are available but I ended up buying a medieval castle that given a week or two I could have easily built in trueSpace - shrugs -

If you want some extra trees PM me and I'll mail you a few - as I have the Botannica module I am able to make my own trees and I have a couple that I've made.

Be warned though - Vue is VERY addictive! :D

Rather than start a new thread I thought I'd add this pic here.

I originally made this for the 'Imaginary City' contest at Cornucopia3d.com but decided to submit a different picture instead.

Made with Vue 6 Pro Studio.

Hill top castle from Rodluc's free stuff at Renderosity - thanks.

French Warship, Medieval Castle and kit-bashed Tyrol Castle from Cornucopia3d.com.

The inn, barrels, lamp, fence, gulls, small sailing ship and the domed buildings were all modelled by me using trueSpace 7.51.

Everything else is modified from the libraries supplied with Vue.

Hope ya'll like it - to see the detail in the distant buildings theres a bigger version in my Rendo gallery - link in sig below. :D.

All comments welcome.

In your previous post you mentioned making trees, so did you create this beautiful tree using Vue? I like everything in this rendering, however the right ship/boat really didn't add anything. The little cat helps show scale.

Nice work all around.

A question: If you put all the objects in this rendering into a TS 7.51 scene and tried to render it would it choke?

I really like your latest pic too. All that modelled and rendered in truespace 7.51? Cool!

Very nice scene indeed, this is perhaps my favorite image of yours in a while. I like the contrast of the distant city, which seems to be moving toward something quite modern, yet out here things are still very much countrified and rural. I can almost sense what it would be like to be in the probably busy and bustling city with its merchants (a lot of trade here along the waterway I am sure) and unions and thieves and markets and perhaps a prince or king definitely a ruler of some sort with a fancy house, perhaps council houses too and other such official buildings, courts and the like, maybe the beginnings of science here and there, universities perhaps too... and then riding out for a bit and coming to this quieter retreat where farmers meet, or travelers pause on their journey to the city now that the end is in sight and they can stop for food and drink, etc.

So it provides a nice contrast, and gets you telling tales in your own mind as you look at it. Or it does for me apparently ;)

Thanks!

Tom
