This is a render of the chocolates that didn't make the cut for my speed model challenge. Rendered in Dribble. |

Interested to know why they didn't 'make the cut'? Did you spend too long on them or were you not happy with them? I can understand the former but not the latter - they are excellent... |

The Contest was suppose to end July 18th 2008...
I know it was - but I wasn't around to officially end it, as I'd warned from the start. I did suggest that someone start the poll sooner. I interpreted 'didn't make the cut' as either not meeting some standard of his choosing or the working time criteria, not the actual deadline, but that may be an error on my part - just hoping for a bit of elaboration.... |

I did all of these models in the two-hour frenzy that is the speed modeling contest. However, I spent a much longer time on the textures (basically a full weekend). So in the spirit of the contest, I decided to pick the one that I liked best and enter that.
After seeing prodigy's beautiful render, I thought I'd try to do my hard work a bit more justice and this is the result.
Wow transient. Those look like real chocolates. Good job!
The scene is just two point lights (one main, shadow-casting back-light and one front fill light with a light blue tint). There's no GI or IBL.
Dribble has very high quality dof. Without the dof it doesn't look anywhere near as good. I think this may be because we're sub-conciously used to seeing photo's and movies with this effect, so when we see it our minds say "real". The displacement maps make a huge difference too.
I'll definitely be making more use of dribble's dof in the future. |

Simon will love these for many reasons :D
excellent render, I love the tin foil
Would you care to tell a bit more on the DOF settings in Dribble. I never get it to work so nicely.

Rendered in Dribble? Most appropriate - the picture is enough to make me dribble!
Tasty work Transient. |

Very very nice and job.. All is looking good.. Dof, the shader, the camera angle, the models... i dare to say the best dribble's render.
You should add this picture to the SMC maybe we are in time to add your render to the poll.. |

So real, I think that one on the left has a hole poked in the bottom to check and see if it's not one of those weird coconut creams. |

Thanks for explaining Transient; I think this is an awesome image and as folks have said it's a great advert for Dribble. I personally prefer it to the image you did submit for the SMC although that is very cool too. Think you might have had a win on your hand if you'd submitted this, so at least everyone else can breathe a little easier... excellent effort. |

Great picture. I hate to ask your secrets but how did you get that texture on the crust of the two foreground pieces? |

Great picture. I hate to ask your secrets but how did you get that texture on the crust of the two foreground pieces?
There's no real secret, it's just a displacement map I made in gimp.
First I filled the backfround layer with 50 percent gray (128,128,128); then I duplicated it and added a canvas filter to give it texture. Then I changed the opacity of the top "canvas" layer to tone it down. Then I merged the layers.
I then painted over the parts I didn't want to have displacement with the same grey. Grey is the median point for displacement in dribble (I think) which is why I start with that color.
I've added a picture with an overlay of the uv map. Hopefully what I said made some sense. |
