Here are some renders I made using the model side, because for me, the workspace real time renderer just takes a screenshot, and doesn't support the bumpmaps I use (It doesn't render them).

These are renders of my realistic looking, very bright and colorful polygon hair, in which I used cones, alpha maps, bump maps, and of course the colored textures. I know the heads are simple spheres, but I was trying to make the hair look better, and not the heads. I don't like the workspace hair tools because they don't provide enough hair, and no contol curves to animate the hair with. That's why I always go for the polygon hair, besides the fact that I like to make game graphics.:)

TamTam, you really ought to seek out the hair.tsx plug in or even look at investing in Dribble if you want better hair. These are nice little experiments but you describe them as 'realistic looking'......:o

EDIT: Save you the trouble, I have attached this little classic plug-in. Don't underestimate the results you can get with it.....:D

The Workspace Hair tools do seem a bit limited at first glance but I recommend that you check out Parva's Grass tutorial. This will show you how to combine your alpha plane techniques with the WorkSpace Hair to create better results than just using simple strands.

Is there anywhere a Tutorial for this HairTsx Plugin?

@Splinters - I guess it is cartoony looking. Would be great for my games though. Thanks for the link, I might already have HairTSX, but I downloaded it just in case I don't have it.

I can't imagine how long it took to render all the geometry plus the millions of hairs on the "Monsters Oink" image. How long did it take?

@DesignDevil - Edit: - I will try to make a tutorial for you as soon as I figure out how to use it properly. I will make it in a MS Word Document, and put it into a zip file. I will try my best.

A few minutes...:D

I layered two spheres to double the fur. No post processing either. Give it a try or, if you can afford it, buy Dribble...fur is excellent.

@Splinters - Do you know how to use this plugin? I can't figure it out... yet. As you can probably see in my image, I have control curves (NURBS curves), on a head I made, and one curve is selected. When I press the Generate button, there is an error message, and my hair does not generate. I don't know what i'm doing wrong. Please help.

Never tried that, I simply generate the hair from the head, or sphere. You would need a 'mask' if you want limited hair generation.

But those images with the pig are made by you. You must be using HairTSX or some other hair plugin for TS. Do you?

Does anyone here know how to use HairTSX?:confused:

I never tried generating hair from a Nurb control curve....:rolleyes:

That might explain the crash you get. Place a sphere in your scene, select the plug in and generate hair from it. Repeat and experiment.

If you want, say a hairline, then (in PE mode) select the faces you want then copy them. Use this 'mask' and generate hair from it. The hair would only be generated from this 'mask and if you scale the object down slightly and place it within the original object it will seem that the hair is growing out if it.

You might get a more positive response Tamtam if your questions were worded a little more positively. Of course I made the Pig images and just because I do not reply with a full explanation does not imply I cannot use it...:cool:

Oh, sorry about my non-positive wording. :o I am trying to be positive, but sometimes the words I say don't come out the way I intended them to. Again I am really sorry about not being positive. We were all newbies at one point or another, and that's what I still am: a newbie. Especially since 7.6 came out, there are quite a few new tools that I may need help with. That's why I came to these forums: for help with Truespace.:)

OK - I've never used the Hair TSX before, so you get to see me learn how to use it.

I would suggest that once you have this down pat, you play around with the various parameters to see what you can do with it. Looks like the more polygons in your mesh - the thicker the hair.

If I can get it to upload.....

got it.

And you can always use the Hair tool on the workspace side

TamTam - try doing a search in the old forums (http://forums.caligari.com/discus/messages/board-topics.html) for Hairtsx. Search using the blue key icon at the bottom of the page. If I remember correctly Madmouse did some excellent work with that plugin and explained how he used it in great detail.

Those old forums are a treasure trove of useful tips and info on many subjects. I'm sure you will find good advice there.

Thankyou kena, Thankyou W!zard, Thankyou Splinters, and everyone else here at the Truespace forums!:banana:

@W!zard

Edit: I couldn't find the link to the tutorial, and I tried doing several different "Hair" searches on the old forums like you said to do. Please could you please help me find it... please?

@kena

Edit: Thanks for the video tutorial! Now i'm going to try to make the hair on my models. Did you see the option for "control curves"? I think it's in the "advanced", or "hair curve" options after you click that little plus sign next to the option.

Hi TamTam - I searched under 'Hair Warrior' because Madmouses project was called Ancient Warrior. You'd need to dog around a bit - other search terms that may yield good results are 'Alpha Hair' and 'Grass' as I recall people were using the hair plug in to make quite good grass.

Sadly, I can't give you any pearls of wisdom. But looking at your first image, considering that's polygonal modelling, that's quite something. Of course, here's what I do when I need something quick.

Fuzzbaaall....http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i192/Weasle_01/fuzzball.jpg

That's simbiont ts cotton wool that is.
Not quite at the grade you've done it but an alternative...if you're doing animals

That's amazing Weevil!

@W!zard - I found the link to MadMouse's WIP, but I still can't find the tutorial. I will do more searches. Also, I found his finished image.

Do remember TamTam that this particular plug in generates geometry. Unlike Dribble, Vray and the Simbiont shader, each hair you generate will consist of real polygons which can soon add up and, in some cases, bring your PC to it's knees...:o
