it feels more like a gimmick than a useful tool.

Soft brush is one of the things about 7.5 I really like. It's not a sculpting tool.

It's extremely useful for tweaking your mesh, particularly when you're nearly finished and want to make subtle changes to the overall mass of your object. Modo has a similar tool that I really liked when I had the demo.

It's also one tool I definitely miss when I model in Hex.

I like their implementation. Blender's and silo's are good as well. I just don't care for our(tS) version of the tool, could also be I'm just not as fluent with this tool inside tS as opposed to other packages.

just a note about using it...keep your topology in form with your desired mode..e.g. create loops around a mouth or eyes, this will help providing appropriate flow and divisions where needed.

This is what we Zbrush or 3d Coat users call masochism !:p

I always think in those categories ..... what time do I spend

messing around with a tool that I can spend in my job earning

the money to get something that realy shines !

for some its just earning the money for a few hours to get us

Zbrush or Mudbox !

Even 3d coat does a quite good job !

Its painfull what i say ..... i know ! and maybe some of you dont like

me for saying things like these from time to time but its the most honest

thing that you will hear ... and I tell you to help !

Caligari should focus on making VERy GOOD basic tools first !

I agree, I'd rather have 1 useful tool than have 18 gimmicky tools.

Most important for 3d work is the beginning ... when the choice of the right tool turns the job into delight or stress !

I dont have very many things and believe me I have successfully avoided

the trap of the big names !

I even love to use free tools and am beginning to get around Blender...

because of uv mapping etc.

This soft paint brush is handy for finishing touches but its not made for sculpting !

Avoid cleaning the floor with a tooth brush ! Use a broom !

Its made for that and it lots faster !

The best way for a head is sub - d modeling it and at the end use

a sculpt tool for the creases or for ageing etc. !

Nowherebrains tutorials are a great start !

Whats important in modeling a face is the flow of the mesh !

You cant get that with initial sculpting !

all you get looks like little pebbles !

To anyone who does a lot of subd modeling, soft select tools are important. They really have nothing to do with zbrush, or especially 3dcoat which needs a coherent model to begin with. Softbrush is not an imitation zbrush tool, perhaps it's just got a bad handle.

Some modelers like to start with a sphere in zbrush and retopo later, I still like to model my poly version first and add detail later. 3dcoat won't work properly without a decent model to begin with (it's not zbrush), it's not intended to do this - hence the name 3dcoat.

it doesn't work well without a good uv map on the object either. It's more like deep-paint than zbrush

As a general rule model first is the best method.
