Here is my contribution to the VE gallery. This project has occupied me for about two months due to the research required, the detail I desired and my incompetence with tS. (LOL). I'm sure it could be improved but I am ready to move on.


I give you----The Alamo as it appeared in 1836.


The iconic church of the Alamo is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the US. It marks the site of an 1836 battle in the war for Texas independence in which about 180 Texans definding the old mission fought an overwhelming force of the Mexican Army. After a siege of 10 days, the Mexican army stormed the compound and killed all of the combatants including Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie.


Visitors to the site today see only a small fraction of the large Alamo compound that was defended by the small group of Texans. Only the church and part of an adjacent building remain. The modern city of San Antonio has engulfed the surrounding walls of the old mission. In 1836, the church had no roof and the interior contained a ramp and platform for cannons defending the eastern walls.


This Virtual Earth 3D model depicts the Alamo compound as it may have appeared in 1836. It is to scale and is superimposed over the existing buildings in San Antonio. My source is the book by Mark Lemon, The Illustrated Alamo 1836 A Photographic Journey, State House Press, (2007).


The model is 8 MB and 29K verticies.

It is about 3 MB and 7K verticies so it should load faster in slower systems.

hi jrboddie

i´m new to this VE, just downoladed it , followed your links to watch your model but it just shows maps and names and no 3d model of the Alamo...where is it?:confused:

You might need to adjust some options in VE to see the 3D models.
Fire it up, and then:
1) Click the 'Options' icon.
2) Click '3D Settings'.
3) Select 3D Performance.
4) Ensure that 'Show Buildings' and 'Show detail' boxes are ticked.

Also after arriving at the site, click '3D' in the menu. This will load the 3D applet and then render the model.


Depending on your bandwidth and server load, this could take anywhere from a second of two to a minute.

Most impressive! Nice touch with the cannon too. Only bad thing is it reminds me of my basic training at Lackland AFB. ;)

Very impressed! One of the best I've seen in VE yet - be sure to enter the monthly contest with this one I would say!


It's great to see real buildings being brought to life in this way. I've actually been to the Alamo, my first visit to the US was to San Antonio for SIGGRAPH, as it happens.

I agree, nice work Jrboddie! :)


You've got some nice details in there like the cannons and statues. I just wish VE had FPN mode so I could actually walk around in there. ;)

Regarding FPN mode: I agree! It is fun walking around in the model in tS using FPN. The tS actor can climb stairs and never walks through walls.


I have not found a way to 'go inside' a model in VE3D like I can in tS.

Since the latest VE update some months ago, objects are now "solid" and you do indeed run into them and can't go inside. I believe you can work around this by making each wall a separate object, that way the bounding box will be per wall, and not per building. You'd have to upload each wall separately, rather than grouping them and uploading all at once (which treats them as one object with one bounding box once they get into VE).


A rather long process though, but one I think would work.


tS shared spaces do offer a different experience of course - you don't get the geospatial positioning as you do in VE, but you do get better lighting, better collision detection, the FPN navigation system, scripting for interactive objects and scenes, plus the opportunity for people to actually meet each other while browsing the space. Both of course are intended to satisfy different needs, and you can always link from the VE space to the tS shared space (I hope to have some basic examples of that posted soon).
