Trees and grass would really help. You could use hair for the grass. Parva posted a tutorial for that. Heck the trees could be done pretty much the same way.
It would also help to model little tufts of grass or small plants. Drop in a few rocks, stumps, etc.
Edit: WAIT A SEC!!! I think this needs MUSHROOMS! :D |

I plan on doing that for Tru-Vue, but for the TS renders, I was looking for more of a monument in a stark setting. |

Awesome. I love the lighting and angle of the sun you have chosen; those long shadows really do show Stonehenge at its best. Must agree with Jacks comments though. Really looking forward to seeing the final render. Keep up the good work. |

It would be cool to see a few people around to give it some scale - some naked druids might do the trick!
The thing that really surprised me when I visited Stonehenge was just how small it was.... until you got close up and realised how big it actually is! With that thought in mind I look at your various renders here and realised that due to the smoothness of the big stones and the non-real ground textures you have no scale cues to suggest how big it is. It could be a scale model on a table top or an alien version of stonehenge 1o times the size of Earths version. It's this reason more than any other (no scale cues) that I must confess I don't like that ground texture at all.
Still watching this with interest - I
ll look forward to seeing how it looks in Vue so please post us a Vue version or two when you get there. |

lol - turns out that most of the problems with the ground were physical, not map. for some reason, there were pieces that were .001 and .002 off of true in the Z axis. I've just spent 16 hours straight fixing them, then I took a nap... Once I fix a bit more of the geometry, I will see what I can come up with. |

I got a bit impatient.
Here is the scene - V-ray and real time with a cat and horse in it.
The animals don't render very well in v-ray though. The cat became a black cat, and the horse is part palomino.

no matter HOW I import the land into Vue, it comes out messed up... so I'm going to take the time to split out the sections and see if I can get it to work that way. |

I'm not too keen on the animals but I like what you've done with the place! Your handling the lighting really well. I didn't know there was a hill surrounding the stones. Was it made of rock or soil. I'm sure there wasn't grass because they hadn't invented lawnmowers yet. Right?:p |

That's ironic because the ditch and mound are the henge. :p |

Cool work Kena! The grass really helps the image, so definitely a good idea to take it over to Vue for some foliage. ;) |

Great work kena! It gives one the sense of the place - almost like being there :-).
I would have moved the camera to the right & up a tad so as to get a fuller view of the place, but doubt you'd want to do another 6 hr render :-) |

Tried that, but then could not see the shadow on the "summer stone". The 6 hour render was because the sunlight/atmosphere options I used were the very highest that vue had to offer. ;)

Yeah, Unfortunately, my pc will not handle that many alpha planes in TS, but it works well in Vue. |

Looking good - only suggestion I'd make is that you scale down the grass a little and set your camera at roughly head height to convey the true scale of the place.
Also when using Vue it's not usually that necessary to use the highest quality settings unless you are using complex lighting (GI and Global Radiosity) and even then lesser quality settings will give faster renders for little loss of render quality.
Hope this helps |

Hi all.
here is some samples of Stonehenge from my CG movie named Sonde.
It was after the Antlantid (episode 2) on the storyboard (posted on another treath).
see the video on the attached .wmv files.
i hope you lihe this version. |

Nice work Marcel. :)
Only critique I have is related to the snow. I think the snow would've looked better using particles. In the video it looks like it was done with a post effects filter on top of the image, instead of actually being a part of the scene.
Also we need to be careful that people judging the thread (Kena's MMC entry) don't get confused about whose work is whose. ;) |

Hi.
You are right. the snow is made with the soft "Particule illusion" on top of a morphing with two TS images (the first image with grass and the last image with snow on the floor and on the top of the stones). I think it will be more real if the cam moved. but it was not necessary for this scene in the movie (it was an hologram made by the robots).
Difficult to explain in english.... |

Thanks Breach...
Here are some more tru-vue renders. I made the weeds and grasses a bit smaller and tried different angles.

Then I decided to put Stonehenge on an alien planet. Just for the fun of it.
