As my last post to these forums, I thought I'd share the last piece I'll be working on in trueSpace. This is a 30-second spot for use on the product's website, in-store displays, a few of the Jumbotrons scattered about NYC and maybe on-air in the UK (not sure on that one yet). All 3D was created in trueSpace6.6, as tS7 isn't stable enough to be used for any serious time-sensitive video production work, w/ compositing done in AfterEffects:

(screengrab from video)

tS7 has just never worked properly and with Microsoft's purchase of Caligari, the elimination of VRay, and the total lack of any real meaningful information from Caligari about the future of trueSpace (even less so than before the MS purchase, which is an impressive feat) I can't afford to take the chance to do any kind of work in the program, so after relegating tS to the back burner for only simple 3D work it's now been pushed off the stove entirely. As much as I hate to do it, what are we who make money doing 3D work supposed to do in a situation like this?

It's nothing personal Caligari. I've always had issues with some of the UI quirks of trueSpace, but those combined with the bugs in tS7.x, as excited as I was about its release and as fast as I whipped out my credit card to pay for it the very day it was made available for sale, have just sucked any joy out of working with the program. From a broken VRay implementation to no VRay, to a total lack of support from more in-depth plugin developers (that isn't to knock those that have developed stuff for trueSpace - but plugins to add features that should have been there in the first place aren't enough, and being able to upload to TurboSquid doesn't help when you're typically creating things from scratch that you can't re-sell - which would be difficult anyway given the non-standard file format).

I can look back at many of the projects I worked on in trueSpace and be proud of them. In hindsight, however, I think I'm more proud of the fact that I was stubborn enough to fight my way through trueSpace to make those projects happen than I am of the actual projects, and that's just a level of stress I don't need and an amount of time that's not economically feasible. Believe me when I tell you M&M's and companies like Mars, Inc. that makes them don't care that your point editing tools are buggy as hell - they just want their characters looking the way they should.

I'm not happy about it. I'm actually pretty sad about the whole thing. I still like the way trueSpace does some things. But that's no longer enough.

For those of you who stay - good luck, and I hope things get better. For others, I'll see you in forums dedicated to other programs.

Sorry to see another face go and that is some lovely work. I hate to say 'I'm off' as I often drop in here but I share many of your concerns. I have seen many good artists leave tS for good and I see a few more doing the same in the near future.

tS could do with more advocates like you and I hope they will see these comments for what they are; a genuine message of dissatisfaction at both the quality of the program and the level of communication.

Good luck out there....:D

We have a bill for you but the Philadelphia Office has been closed for years. You don't return emails so why should we care?

Sound familiar?
"Because I am so absolutely sick and tired of the horrid tS7 object manipulation widget and I see no signs of it being changed, it looks like I'm going to have to put up the cash and have a replacement developed myself.

My main goal is to work w/ a developer to have a Maya-style object widget created for trueSpace. If you're not familiar w/ Maya's far superior implementation of the exact same feature, hoboy, wait until you see how much easier it is to work with.

Once the new widget has been developed and tested, my secondary goal comes into play: I want to release it at no cost for other tS7 users to also gain the same benefits in terms of usability. Hopefully enough users will adopt its use that either Caligari will rethink their design, or will include this new widget as an additional option for object manipulation - because who doesn't like options?

If you're interested - and capable - of developing custom widgets, please contact me through a private message on this forum. From there, we can discuss cost as well as potential development issues. I have a pretty good idea of what kind of time and budget such an undertaking would require, so hopefully haggling can be kept to a minimum and we can get underway toot-sweet. Examples of your experience will be required.

Steinie:
My email address - as well as other ways to contact me - are not hard to find. As to what you personally could possibly have a bill for, I have absolutely no idea as I've never worked with you, but based on your eagerness to bring private matters into public you've cut off at least one potential revenue stream for yourself. Congrats. In the future, try not to involve yourself in business matters that have nothing to do with you, as you never know who you're talking to, who will read it or where and how large their spheres of influence lay.

Unless I'm mistaken Stan released that Maya widget for free some time ago for a previous version of tS7, and if anyone has a right to say anything to me about that situation, it's him - not you. If he's still out there on these forums, he can contact me through a private message and I'll make sure the situation is resolved in a satisfactory manner.

Why should you care? Because I'm the type of user that is ready, willing and able to purchase quality 3D software, plugins, rendering engines, and I thought that's what I was doing when I purchased trueSpace, from versions 3-7, did my best to support Caligari by writing a (published) book on the program, supporting and funding plugin development and working at their booth way back in the day at Siggraph 99 (or was it 2000?).

Or how about just because I do this for a LIVING. For very large, very particular and very well known companies and I know what's necessary for a program of this type to succeed on a self-supporting scale. If that's not enough, I suppose I'll just have to cope with you not caring. Somehow, I think I'll manage.

Splinters:
Thanks, I'll miss you too :), even if I've only been lurking every once in awhile over the past year or so due to other commitments.

No need to miss me, I am still out there trying to make my mark in the fledging world of online books...:D Pop in and have a look, maybe drop an email. You never know when you might have to pass on a project you can't manage...;)

And I find myself dropping in here from time to time:

Sad to see you go Nick.

Regarding plugins, the 7.6 SDK is still a public beta.

Apparently there's been 18,000 views/downloads of it or so, but, very few plugins released as of yet. More are coming.

Which book did you publish?

I am not surprised that professionals are leaving. We have requirements that we can not ignore. TS is a two-headed soft (workspace and model). Until we are not fixed on the final result many will leave. It is now clear that professionals are not the priority. When we paid for years to work with TS, we have the right to know what is under consideration. My last thread "dead or life for TS" does not seem interested Caligari. The team maintaining his silence. I am disappointed with that attitude. I hope that I will not be forced to leave also.

Sigh. Do people not read the entire message before responding? This didn't need to happen in front of an audience, Stan. The whole point WAS to give it away, so I'm not sure what the issue is there.

As for payment, regardless of the fact that the widget never worked properly - and I think this is probably due more to the limitations of widgets at the time than anything else - let's deal with that immediately. Moving long distance twice in less than two years can push some things out of my head, and unfortunately you were one of them. Sorry.

Check your PMs. Email the address in the PM with your info. I'm not checking these boards any more, it's simply not worth the effort. If anyone else needs to contact me, please do so through my website.

Once again, good luck to those of you who strive to make things better - your effort & contributions are the only reason I bothered keeping up with trueSpace these last few years.
