Here is my latest work. As usual, it's a starship. My biggest problem is one of windows. This thing will be huge. Almost one kilometer long. Is there and easy way to do many windows at once without making all of them? The last image is an earlier one but there is a speck next top the runabout. That is more or less human size.

Physical(poly/nurbs patch) windows or texture based? Kinda depends on the shot. I would use textures for any shot that is not a "dolly" or flyby. otherwise make anothe model of just the piece that will be in the shot and posistion it as to match the scale and motion(matching). Then fade between the two. This will allow you to focus on a much smaller scale for the details.

I am a real amateur when it comes to texturing. I did the tutorial but it doesn't make sense to me.

are you talking about the tS tutorial or mine?

When you are texturing you need to think of your object as a piece of oragami that you unfold and paint on. So think of where you want to place your slices based on the way you want to unfold your model. I'm not trying to sell you some thing you don't want to buy so tinker around with that thought for a while and if it does not help my "texturing molly" tutorial is actually very cheap, but see wht you can do on your own first.
