Thought I'd try somtin different. This time I'll start the model of the body using a rounded cylinder instead of my usual box shape. Let's see if this is any better as techniques go.

looks like a good start. Not too many ways to research this one. No known "real" image exists, so you have lots of concepts to look for.

yea, ya know kena; I figured out that's also the beauty of this topic choice. If one cycles through the websites of the ancient wonders, they all seem to use the same pics for representation.
How about this folks; you can be the first to show a new view of what the ancient Wonders looked like, 3D modeled and ready to sell! How's That for incentive? :D
As for the accuracy of the look, I'll use the overplayed pic I've seen round the sites, and take it from there.

Wow, brave subject choice Dragn - look forward to seeing how it turns out. You should be able to use some tricks you learnt doing the Dragon though to make your life easier!

I have used low-resolution cylinders as a base for SDS work (e.g. my jet) and have wondered about using them for a torso. As I'm no expert, I don't know all the ins-and-outs but to my eye it already looks like you could end up with creasing or some sort of distortion at what I take to be the arm-pit where you get a pole from the extrusion - I'm assuming you'll need to re-organise the mesh inthis area at some point?

Good luck - a really interesting challenge. If you run in to problems, you can always attempt to model at after years of decay - just a foot and ankle with the rest collapsed in a heap of rubble! Although that might be more difficult...

Wait...you didn't mean this colossus? (http://images.google.com/images?as_q=Randy%2BRhodes+&gbv=2&hl=en&btnG=Google+Search&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=Randi&imgtype=&imgsz=&as_filetype=&imgc=&as_sitesearch=&safe=images&as_st=y)

Hey Froo... I'm here buddy. Just gettin slapped with life's issues; playin catch up. Thanx for the effort. You have mail :-)

Nez - that's a cool idea; more of a romantic image; I like. But I'll give it a go and try to do the whole statue since this is practice as much as anything else. For example, never modeled draped cloth before on a statue. Now, as for the creasing, if I add enough loops around there it should work out fine.

Interesting dilemma just came up. The more I researched this subject, the more the consensus is that the normal view of the Colossus (ie: a large statue standing astride the port entrance) we are used to, is only a recent one; from Medieval times. Technically it may not have been possible, and even if it was, the port would have to be closed for the duration of the construction (abt 12 yrs); THAT, is not logical. And... the statue's pose is a bit different than what we know and love; the actual pose was more classical. The best guess is that it was placed towards the other side of the city, on a slope.

So... the colossal, romantisized image is shattered for me. Now, do I go with it anyway, bolstering the 'image' but not the reality? Or, do what the ancients had (most likely) Actually done? Mmm hmm hmm... what to do what to do?

Ok... since even my 'fantasy' pics and models always look to reality (or what IS possible) for guidance, I will go with the best gestimate of what it Actually looked like.

Here's what I got so far: supposedly, his left hand was draped with a cloth, and his right hand was covering his eyes from the 'glare of the sun'. I will model the body seperately, then add the cloth arm, but had to go after the cloth thing just to get a feel for it.

Thanx Breech. Well, haven't decided if I will use a skeleton to pose the arms, or if I should just model them in place. Yeah, I'm curious how it will come out also. :-) Tryin' a few new tricks here.

That's looking great Dragn, I like how the cloth is looking.

As for what shape etc to go with -well no-one really knows what it looked like, so now is the chance for you to express your theory or preferred artistic vision (or whatever you think will be easiest to model!) - or knowing you, what you'd find most challenging/gratifying to model!

Keep it up!

Sometimes projects take us on longer journeys than we had planned, but it's generally worth it.. I am enjoying seeing where you take us with this one, Dragneye

@WWOTW Heheh, yer funny :D.. suppose you could go with "Rhodes Scholar" instead, which would be not too shabby an association ;)

Man, I'm torturing through this. Tried to save me some time and Boolean add what eventually will be the 'drapes' (lol) but to no avail (would really like a reply in that other thread about Boolean problems; wink wink) so... took the what now seems tortured route of creating the extras on a non-symmetrical mesh by hand, or rather, eye. Pic 1 below is what will be the right side, pic 2 both sides. They aren't done by far!

Bit the bullet, I see.. glad you did that .. I really like how this is coming along ^_^

Sorry not to show much progress myself, recently adopted nomadic existence is playing havoc with my own productivity.. but I'll keep trying :o

Will post some views later on tonight.

Turns out, the Statue of Liberty design was influenced by the Colossus of Rhodes. Interesting that I would pick this wonder over the others; and...I came up with this basic posture/shape for my model from the begining. Didn't know this when I started. I live in NY and my background is Greek. What a coinkidink.

Anyway... went with the concept that the original pose would most likely be more traditional than the stylized straddling one we are used to. Looking at it now, I should have gone with the romantic version, cuz after the supposed earthquake that toppled the statue, it has been speculated that it had broken at the knees (the hanging toga thing would have been real support, but, maybe the right knee buckled and then the destruction theory still works). it was also linked to the God Helios (Sun), and he rode a chariot, so the idea was (was dying to build the chariot and horses but...) in his right hand he'd be holding a whip. The last pic is the parts before one layer of SDS and Boolean.

Alas...

This is as far as I can get to now. I have to go back into my lair and finish other things before I can continue on this. There is waaay too much 'food on my table at the moment'; also have some game models that need to be finished ;), so though I have been Very inspired to consider the Ancient Wonders as subject matter for future models, I have to pop the hand brake and get back to my main road.

I do encourage people to enter the challenges though; it really is a great way to 'challenge' your art skills. I have learned new things with this one that will definitely be used very soon.
