Well.. played around some more with this.. the render on model side is almost instantaneous :) .. but I guess there is no way to render on workspace unless I buy more software .. ?

the texture i was playing with (yes I saved this without textures) is really beautiful but does not show up so nicely in the render.. also.. the bordering rectangle had sections just like the center parts but they vanished in the boolean add operation.. so the texture is getting streeeettttttccchhheeddd.
:p in places

So .. here's a pic.. things will keep changing.. now I have to figure out how to model stairs.. about time, I guess.. :o

you are definitely off to a good start there. for the textures getting stretched...

apply a UV projection, and you get a shadow-box with handles that you cna use to stretch or squash the UV... once you get it close, you can then use the UV editor to refine it.

Hmm, I'll have to see if I can find that... thanks ^_^

Meanwhile I'm really still in the modeling stage :p but I got curious about textures..

You lost me...

But it's cool to see you taking the plunge and entering a challenge Butterpaw - looks like you're off to a good start, looking forward to seeing how it turns out. No way I could tackle a 'hanging gardens' at the moment - I considered doing the 'great hanging basket of Rochester' but even that seemed too daunting...

The fact that mine does not exist except possibly in the virtual world... gives me a little leeway for playfulness.. Don't expect reality to get much of a foothold here .. :D

Well, exactly - that's something that allows you and Dragn to have as much fun as you like!

I don't entirely know why they remain listed as part of the 7 wonders when no-one can really say for sure what they were like... at least the pyramids are still standing (to a degree anyway).

I thought the Seven Classical Wonders of the World had all been destroyed except for the pyramids so we only have historical references (and usually translations of historical references) to go by. I've no doubt that the ancient writers were just as susceptible to exaggeration and hyperbole as todays modern ad writers are so I guess we have to be a bit suspicious about the realities of all the original 7 except the pyramids.

Recently a list of 7 new wonders was compiled and everything on that list still exists.

My own personal list of 7 man-made wonders I have seen would have to be headed with the Taj Mahal. I saw the Taj 21 years ago and can still remember the awesome impact it had on me.....

Funny you should mention that.. I thought of it immediately when thinking of wonders of the world..

My dear friend Zinat Devji went to see it - she made it a point - when she realized she was dying of cancer.. I'm always glad to remember she got her wish.. she said it was beautiful beyond any photographs or imaginings. :)

She taught me to appreciate many wonderful (and sometimes very simple) things in life... like, incense and candles burning when leisurely bathing .. because we should take time to treat ourselves well... I may do that again... (if I ever find time again for more than a lightspeed shower) ... I still remember how refreshing that was to the spirit as well as the body... she believed in reincarnation... so, I wonder where she is now ... probably making people happy - she had that knack. When she said Taj Mahal.. it sounded like Taj Mahel ...
.... oh my.. I think I've bloggerated, lol :D

Yes, I researched the 'hanging gardens' and saw that everything was from artists' imaginations and sometimes from descriptions that were written well after those gardens had ceased to exist.. so... I get to make my own version

... at least.. I'll try ^_^

Not wanting to go OT but - your friend got it right - she sounds like a wise spirit.

I spent 4 amazing months in India and I had dismissed the Taj as I'd seen it in so many photos and figured I didn't need to see it. As it happened Agra, where the Taj is was en-route between two places I did want to see. I had the immense good fortune to arrive in Agra at the full moon and was able to see the Taj change colour from full sunlight to full moon light. I went into the Taj grounds at about 1.30 in the afternoon and finally left at 10 that night - the entire experience was magical and utterly unlike anything I have ever experienced.

I've been fortunate to have visited many places and many astounding wonders and works of man and the Taj Mahal under the light of a full moon easily surpasses anything else I've seen. What started off as a "might as well take a look while I'm here" sort of thing turned into one of the most memorable highlights of my life.

To anyone out there considering taking a trip to Agra to see the Taj let me say that I strongly recommend it.

Sorry for the OT ramble....

Awesome! thx for sharing the memory :)

- as for the OT ramble... well I started it... so I can take any blame which may accrue. ;)

To be honest, this challenge and the comments that have come up.. and consequently the memories revived .. are all a delight to me.

My friend passed away 25 years ago.. but her influence is still with me in my life .. as it must be for many others who knew her :) ... sweet to be reminded so presently ^_^

Wow good to see you in the MMC butter! :)

I like your ordered geometry; neat and clean.

Zinat... now that name sounds familiar. Glad to hear that the memories are fond and inspirational!

Someday maybe we'll go see the Taj Mahal... Someday... just as soon as

3-day weekend Mom-care - I love her to pieces but after answering the same question 20 or 30 times .. one's brain gets a bit blithered.. She does have better days, still, thank goodness :) and she's such a sweet soul, I hate to have to keep telling her I can't eat or drink things she offers me because I'm diabetic... so .. often I'm just 'full' thanks Mom :o

For Monday see my blog entry http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/blog.php?b=241 and

Tuesday and Wednesday 10-hour work days running statisics at work (and making up the lost time) ... kept a promise and stopped in at scriptors (was that last night? or the night before?)

And, finally, last night opened up my laptop to start modeling and promptly fell asleep with it on my lap - good thing nothing startled me awake! I really must get my desk organized again.. although I do nod off there too...

Well, I did a restart on butterlon at about 6 am this morning, and I get to do some modeling again tonight .. looking forward to it.. I finish work at 7 tonight so only a couple more hours ... I suppose my game dev buddies are about due to come lookin' for me for slacking too .. :p

Whatever my life is.. it's not dull.

Now.. I just have to figure out how to make stairs.. :D

@ Froo Yes.. Zinat was a real person.. and I just could not help including her in my game (although the character is quite different of course.. but the name is a nod to her ^_^.

... break's over.. I better get back to work!

this tutorial is for 5.1, but should work for any version of TS

http://www.geocities.com/j_f_mcallister/index.html

I use it when I want a refresher on making stairs in TS the easy way.

hmm as soon as I move this object it changes size slightly and seems to be somewhat askew. It will not true up to other parts of my model... I tried rebuilding many, many times but I always get this anomaly when applying sweep (I'm working model side in 7.51, in case that's not obvious):
13250

Finally, I gave up on that for the night and began building stairs this way (not the most efficient!):

13251

Can anyone help me sort out that problem with sweep? :p

Ok, finished building that and resized and boolean subtracted from a cube... got stairs .. I would stilll appreciate anything anyone can tell me to avoid the problem I had so that I can build them simply in future. :o

here are the images:

13253 13254

13255 13256

To be honest, I just took a stab at step height... really I should have scaled it correctly but ... I think it's approximately right proportionally to my model. The stair block is 4m x 4m x 4m.
