Heh heh, thanks Steinie... I'm probably too much of a beginner for a project like this.. but it's fun.. whether I manage to finish in time or not :p |

Well I said all along that any submission to these forums are better then none at all. The only way we can better ourselves is to display our work and get suggestions, help, or criticisms. I'm glad your not afraid to do that.
To keep these forums fresh and active we need people like yourself contributing ideas, works or problems. The persons skill level to me is unimportant.
The problem with the stairs looks to me to be bad geometry when sweeping. It is hard to tell decisively. Did you try locking two planes before extrusion? |

Good Stairs!!! sorry the tutorial didn't help much, but I think Steinie may be right about the geometry.
And keep going as much as you can. That is the ultimate purpose of the contests. To help improve your abilities. I think I'm getting better as I go along. I know you will too. :D |

LOL "try locking two planes?" I don't even know what that means.. let alone how to do it ... (wasn't it 1 plane before extrusion?) ... all advice welcomed!!! ^_^ |

Ok I followed the tutorial that Kena suggested. For the heck of it I swept with a setting of .5 and extruded a bunch of times. I could have just increased the number and swept once.
I rotated the finished stairs without artifacts. See if this might help. |

the "stretched" look to the finished stairs in your's Steinie, is UV caused - just add cubic projection, and it would go away. And yes, that is how it works when I follow that tutorial too.
Keep up the good work butterpaw... I know you can do wonders! |

Thanks Steinie.. as soon as I was sitting in front of tS again .. what you said was clear to me... however.. thanks for the explanations because that tells me even more! :-)
@kena, lol thank you! not sure what I've done to merit that degree of confidence, but I'll go with it :D
thanks bunches guys ^_^

I've seen you improve throughout the forums... That is how I can have such confidence in you.
Here is a little tutorial I just made that may help you out if you want to add walls to your hanging gardens. And if you don't, then you may be able to use it for another project!.

Thanks so much Kena - that's very cool and I might indeed use it for this - in anycase I will certainly use is at some point! ^_^
meanwhile here is the next bit:
hmmm my jpg files are being modified in strange ways when being uploaded to tS... trying a png (my preferred format, anyway) :o

Looks like it would be a great setting for an old-school computer game - like a 3d version of pac-man or something like that!
Nice going...
With stairs, I confess I often just build a single cuboid block to represent the first step and then duplicate and offset as many times as required - crude but easy (especially with the CopyEx plug-in) and usually good enough if the underside or sides aren't going to be visible... |

So I don't pay attention for a few days and I see a lot of good progress.
Stairs have always been tricky for, mostly because it takes a lot of redundant work and I hate that. |

Oh dear.. a bit stuck at the moment.. both my collapsible cord mice quit working properly with my laptop, and I'll have to go buy something else.. I'm pretty crippled trying to model using the touch pad.. just spend 2 hours trying to build a small piece of this thing and in the end it apparently did not get saved properly
I'll go buy another mouse today .. something that I hope will actually keep working!
I think I will also buy a usb hub.. and keep it plugged in to my laptop.. those ports are getting far too much use and replacing anything on the machine itself would be expensive I'm sure.. replacing a hub would be a simpler proposition.
I will get back to this .. tonight hopefully - although I don't think I will be able to finish this in time for the challenge.. participating is definitely a good stimulus to development :)
I guess I can just keep developing it in this thread, right? :o
One more question.... does anybody model using keyboard exclusively? Does that work well? or at all? If so.. where can I get the keyboard shortcuts I'd need to do that? (hmm.. that was 3 questions :D |

Just one more answer!;)Modeling with keyboard exclusively? No but I do use KB Shortcuts for changing views enabling me to model on one big view port. I also use KB shortcuts (in collaboration with my mouse) when animating.
I find this works well for me but the best approach is to work out a system that's meaningful for you (IE that makes the KB Shortcuts easier to remember.
Assigning and changing your shortcuts is easy-peasy: Float your mouse pointer over the tool you want to apply a Shortcut to, hold down your CTRL Key and Right Mouse Click to open the shortcut dialog. You can save your own shortcut list in a convenient location.
Hmmm - that was 3 answers!!;) |

and yes.. participants are encouraged to finish so they can submit their finished product for the monthly gallery contest if nothing else. :D
Although... seems like last month's entrants haven't progressed very much this month. ;) |

I'm probably not being the most efficient, but I loathe using shortcut keys. For me, it's hard enough remembering where the icons are, - people might think that a joke, but Butters... you know don't ya? lol
Well recently, I have started using the Ctrl key to add to selection; I'm good for a while. Actually, I like W!ZARD's idea of using hotkeys for views. Might try that out.
Glad to hear you got a new mouse :-)
Oh and yes; get as far as you can. Like the rules say, we can go to the WIP for unfinshed ones. Do the best you can. |

Fantastic modeling! I cannot wait to see it done! And don't worry about not being finished. It used to take me 3 months to do as much as you have done in one. |

Nice work BP - reminds me of the famous Escher drawing, the moving star cases at Hogwarts School of Wizardry and the starcases toward the end of The Labyrinth. |

Heheh .. in the interest of 'full disclosure' I had tested out this idea in the virtual world of Kaneva, where one builds with 'prims' and claps on whatever textures one desires.... It was intended as an art gallery, but I did think how cool it could be as hanging gardens, after I researched all the images I could find in the internet for hanging gardens of Babylon. So I had the idea in mind already, and thought I'd like to try modeling it for real in tS. By the way.. it's a LOT different from building with prims, and my intention is to extend it downwards in further tiers as well as to put the gardens into it. :p13505
BTW it has another nickname - the first moment my buddy Dragneye saw it he blurted out "OMG it's an Aztec slaughter palace!" Well, after I picked myself up off the floor (from laughing).. I did have to agree with him.. (and I had thought I was so 'original' ... hah!) :D
here's a pic of the Kaneva prims version (please ignore the extraneous junk in the background.. I'm an untidy builder, and haven't cleaned up yet: |

That's a cool twist, to put it into a different setting - looks great. Given the glamourous lady in front, could be seen as part of an upmarket shopping development in Florida or Beverly Hills!
I think it's great that you took the plunge this time Butterpaw - hope you've enjoyed it! |

:D hehe thanks guys.. you are so very encouraging ^_^
It was really fun to participate in the MMC.. even though the timeframe was a bit too short for me..
projects like this take me a lot more time than they do for you experienced modelers.. each detail turns out to be another project.. which brings up new questions... and resolutions (part of what I enjoy about it, actually)
eh,.. so I should design a mall? :D LOL |
