Nice to see you again Marie,

I will have a listen to your stuff.

Cheers

Hi everyone! I just wanted to let you all know I'm still alive! (yeah!) I'm sorry I haven't been on in forever. Believe it or not, I started a new job! I'm teaching full-time again, and with it being concert/conference/holiday time, I just don't get online as much as I should!

So, just for the fun of it, since I know you all miss me so, I thought I'd share with you one of my first orchestrated works. This is the first movement of my Magnificat for SSA and chamber orchestra. Sorry for the crappy Midi.

Enjoy!

Marie.............Hey stranger ! Nice creation ! Sounds like things are going well. I have a Yamaha Clavinova that I enjoy creating on myself. My creations used to be inspired by Yanni, 2002, Kevin Kern, Tangerine Dream, Nicholas Gunn, and any orchestrated music...etc. Of course, I like pretty much all music (I used to be a hard core rocker with the rest of 'em)......but when I create, it's more on the lines of New Age listening (piano, strings, choir, etc.).

2Much4you, I think it sounded nice. The title is kind of in your face for the percentage of woman that object to the b word being used, so would hurt your sales with that segment of the population. You need better graphics, a percentage of them are just too simple, and kind of a bore, like the water bubbles. Also they are low resolution. Most video albums have high quality graphics, so to compete, you really need to totally revamp your video, but some of it looks cool, like the orange red part that looks kind of like a fire. Do a google search on video dj for programs that can make good graphics, also you might try doing some in truespace. You seem to have it set to loop. Think it would be better if it just ended, instead of looping. About 2 minutes long is a good format to use for a video single.

Do you have a camera? You might do a search on video overlay programs. They are usually full of special effects you can use in your videos.

I would change the title, as its somewhat antaganistic to a segment of your potential audiance, and can hurt sales.

You can get a lot of editors etc, they were free at http://www.avsmedia.com/AVS-Video-Editor.aspx

Also checkout www.avs4you.com for a lot of free video tools

Uhm notejam, those visualisations you see are generated by Newgrounds, there isn't any video in it and 2much4u didn't add them, they're randomised, just audio, and with most dance songs video would just be distracting. I don't think he intended this as a music video.

Speaking of the audio, I don't usually go for dance music, but this is different (aside from the end which sounds too bright for my taste), the piano runs you've included are pretty nifty, not much else that hasn't been said on the website itself that I can really add.

But the title...yeah, might cause a bit of contraversy if you're aiming it at "all audiences" despite the censoring.

----------------------------------------------------------------
My turn to show some music huh? (Last time I let my friends name my songs ) It's been a while, made with me, my keyboard and my guitar.

This things zipped up so the file attachment button plays nice

This song loops if you bung it into something like moviemaker btw

Oh, ok, but I will add that video editors are good even if you do not use a camera, as you can then edit those graphics that you might be making at random now, and you can also do other things, like wild up the colors used, etc. They will give you some pretty powerfull tools to play around with for any video. You can even use them on your truespace 3d scenes, and animations, you just got to render them out and convert to a format that the editor can load in.

If you have any format conversion problems, there is a lot of converters free at www.download.com A search on video format conversion I think will bring them up for you, many are free, but some you have to pay for.

Cheers MrBones.

Mr .3D Most of my music is roughed out on equipment I acquired as payment in leau of a portion of my wages when I worked in a local music shop. As I had a classical musical training I tend to go for keyboards which emphasise good quality sampled acoustic instruments. I use a Tyros keyboard, and a Fender electric violin. Then throw it through a small yamaha mixing desk, and onto the Pc. Once on the Pc I use various software synths, effects, and sequencing packages to add/ tweak further. Despite being old tech I usually record a midi skeleton of a track as a basic sketch, as I find it easy to edit timings, incorrect fluffed notes etc, after that everything else gets edited/ added ontop. The Tyros has a built in sequencer, but to be honest software sequencers are far superior, so that's the route I take.

Bring on your creations!

keep in mind that i recorded this song with a 4 track recorder back in the day,...

there are about 1500 images that i created using MS Paint!!! yup, MS Paint ! ! ! that crappy paint program,

click here to view it !!!:jumpy:

I now use Cakewalk Sonar home studio 6 XL,

Hex in my head was one of many high energy rock songs, i do some softer mellower songs, but the melodies have a punch.

MS Paint was all i had to construct the pictures used in the Hex in my head ?! music video, but lucky me i had the internet to get the textures needed for all the backgrounds!..

so you produced that song eh??

im trying to get started with my own CD and im doing everything on it. i would say the toughest part is equalizing, just getting all the material to play together and sound good and clear, im mastering too, i will probably send the finished product to discmakers or something for the duplication..

i dont use any studio monitors or " near fields " so no listining experience with them at all, i might get a pair, but im wondering if its worth it

do you use them when your mixing? do they really make a difference when equalizing and listening to a mix?

im using my stereo's speakers with built in sub woofs at this time,

you use headphones at all?

whats your take on using headphones

Yes I sure did, recorded mixed in Protools, Then I exported to Trax for mastering.

The secret in mastering is dithering, When I bounce the tracks I do it in 24 bit, The dithering takes it down to 16 bit while retaining dynamics.

How did you like the song? What did you think> was it impressionable?

Use headphones to mix as long as they are of HIGH quality.

Same with monitors. The higher quality the better the end result will be.

Use Eq and compression on the vocals. during mixdown,

Then Mastering will help even out the music to the vocals.

Let me know if you would like to collaborate. Cheers

Is this thread still running? Alrighty then

A bit of a step up from last time, here's what I've been up to recently, because I don't want to upload TOO many files, I'll link some flash versions of them instead. They may take a while to load and play

First one was just me getting used to Cubase, but I liked how it turned out...so I made a tune out of it
Link (http://fc27.deviantart.com/fs41/f/2009/038/9/2/Demon_by_The_Weevil.swf)

Second third and fourth are 3 OC songs by request
The demo-man (http://fc04.deviantart.com/fs41/f/2009/037/3/6/C_4_theme___The_demoman_by_The_Weevil.swf)
Clawfight (http://fc49.deviantart.com/fs40/f/2009/037/0/f/Kate_O__donnel__Clawfight_by_The_Weevil.swf)
Burning Ice (http://fc46.deviantart.com/fs41/f/2009/044/9/8/Request___Isen___Burning_Ice_by_The_Weevil.swf)

Fifth, was a bit of a joke I'll admit, for any of you famaliar with the caramelldansen internet meme...you're about to hate me :D
It's the Carmaelldansen (http://fc41.deviantart.com/fs45/f/2009/077/f/a/Caramelldansen_Improved_by_The_Weevil.swf)

The last one which is an attached file is a remix of the halo theme I did for a couple of classmates who want to do a halo video montage...thingumy...

That's about enough of my spam

Almost forgot, some of my music can actually be heard these days - the specially created piece for the tS demo videos:

http://cdn.caligari.com/Videos/trueSpace76_demo02.wmv

(42 Mb)

It's done on Cubase, nice to have all that audio recording and MIDI combined now (many moons ago I had to put the audio stuff on an 8 track reel to reel and the MIDI on computer - I forget if I striped the tape with time code or if I just finished up the synths first and recorded it to audio then added the guitars, I think the latter). Anyway, nice now that it can all be done in one place, even the synths are all just soft synths sat on the computer. Technological progress is a joy!

Sounds pretty damn decent Tom...Do you know how to make the synth strings more...string like and less synth like? Though it probably might depend on the version of cubase you're using (which for me is essential 4)

Strings being more string like would primarily come from what synth you are using. For most realism you'd need either a sampler or a physically modeled synth I would say.

Not sure what comes with Essential, I am using Studio 4 and it came with the Halion synth which has some good sounds. There are a ton of free VSTs out there, I haven't bought a soft synth yet, just using Halion and what I found for free on the net!

Next up I guess would be how you play them. I don't mind my strings sounding synth like so I've not looked into this, but it would be important not to do things that are impossible or unnatural with strings though easy and natural with a keyboard. You'd also want to ensure your keyboard is velocity sensitive, and preferably has aftertouch or even pitch bend, so that you can add some nuances to the playing such as bends, vibrato, different volumes and emphasis on each note.

I also figure it depends on how well you know the real instrument - I can be easily fooled by strings, as I don't know much about them. However I've hardly ever heard a guitar sound or playing that fools me they pretty much all sound bad and unrealistic to me, because I play guitar. So if you are an afficionado of strings, a player of strings, or a lover of classical music, it will be harder to get them sounding genuinely string-like.

Anyone got some synths and sounds they recommend for strings?

Yes HalionOne does absolute wonders, but it's a little hard to very things with the lack of inserts and ways you can change the waveform

Form what I hear, cellos usually go at the base, Violins somewhere in the middle and violas at the top...I hoenstly tried that and for some reason those instruments just sound like a wave of a tremelo.

Would you mind posting up a couple of VST links? I honestly can't seem to find any :o

"free vst" in a search engine should uncover a wealth of sites, eg:

http://free-plugin-list.com/

http://www.vstplanet.com/

just to grab the first two :) These should list literally hundreds of synths out there. Most though are analog synth emulators. There are a few specific synths out there for strings, I'll look at my ratings list in a moment and see which I happened to like.

There are tons of VSTs I haven't tried yet, though I've got through quite a few :)

Unsure what is meant about cellos at the bottom etc - if you are trying to set up splits on the keyboard I guess that would be right, but to be honest I wouldn't do that, I'd play each part separately rather than trying to play both at once. Since each is a separate section and will be doing different things, I think it probably best to concentrate just on cellos, then go and record the violins, then go on to the violas, etc.

BTW, I do find I hate most synth violin sounds. Cellos I can be convinced by (sometimes), but violins and fiddles I find squeaky and unrealistic :( I usually go for cellos, then some string section sound. Never tried a solo violin etc though, and not sure how convincing that could come out.

Hmm a ton of synths on those pages I hadn't seen before. Something to do at the weekend I guess, go through some more of these :) Several string ones there too.

On my ratings, the Halion seems to be my favorite for strings, though again I hate violin sounds and only go for string sections and I like synth strings as much as "realistic" ones, so your mileage may vary.

DSK Strings is one you might like to try, and Stringz2.

My favorite VSTs so far are Analog Warfare 3.1, Texture 2.1, Triangle 2, 4orm, and Halion One and Prologue that came along with Cubase. I did like Proteus, which I got with Sonar, but it doesn't work well under Vista and isn't being updated so I don't use it despite the fact it sounded pretty good.

HTH!

im pondering if i should stop it hear, because this is gonna go on for some time...

MRBONES .

yes it was impressionable, typically that and average "if you are average" guy is producing something that is listenable, the song was clear, and i think it has good dynamics, EQing and all levels i think were good, it's good mixing for that type of genre.

i just started recording 24 bit, and i see why people do it now..

man this thread is BIGGGGG!!! :jumpy:, and still going. im gonna wind up spending lots of time in here. listing and collaborating with yal.. i wonder how far i should backtrack...

i'll get more in depth to what im doing once i get some shut eye. there is alot to spill.:banana:
