Hey guys,

I've had this idea for a while and thought I'd put it up and see what happens. This is based off of something a friend and I used to do when we were kids. We were both into art and I had an erasable marker board so we just started doing this one day. One of us would make an abstract squiggle and the other one would turn it into something (see bad 2d example below :) ). This was actually pretty fun and a good way to exercise some creative thinking.

So I thought that this might also be fun translated into 3D. I will upload a 3D squiggle once a month and everyone can turn it into something interesting. The idea is to build off of the 3D squiggle object so I will lay down some starting ground rules.

1. The 3D squiggle should be recognizable somewhere in the model/scene.

2. You may extrude off of the squiggle mesh to expand upon it but you may NOT cut holes or deform it. (with the exception of subdivision surfaces in which you may add layers of subdivision to give it a smooth round look) No deforming also applies to non uniform scaling.

3. You may add geometry to the squiggle mesh but only for extrusion purposes. You may NOT add geometry to deform the squiggle shape itself or to cut holes. This includes fillets/chamfer.

4. You may enter as many times as you wish so long as each entry is made from scratch (meaning no reusing parts from previous entries). You may use pre-made objects to set up the rest of the scene should you choose to make an entire scene. You may also spend as much time as you desire as there is no time limit.

5. Your entries should be ONE 800x600 image each. No putting up multiple images for the same entry and no linking to larger images. This should help keep everything organized and even. MAKE SURE your forum name is on your entry. I would say for now, showing a wireframe is optional but very much encouraged.

That's about all I can think of for now. These rules may change and grow depending on how things work out.

Since the Caligari monthly contest is from the beginning to the end of the month, we'll make this one from the middle of one to the other. So, this first one will end on 6-15-06. All entries must be in by then. I'm not sure how to do the voting yet. Perhaps we can set up some polls at the end of each contest. We'll see how many entries there are though and cross that bridge when it comes. :)

So get your thinking caps on and have some fun people! :D

Ok here's the first 3D Squiggle. I saved it from TS7 as a version 4.3 so I think most everyone should be able to get it ok. Let me know if there are any problems and we can figure something out.

Now get creative, but mostly...HAVE FUN! :D

I think perhaps I should exclude myself from the competition seeing as I'm making the squiggles, but here's one to demonstrate and kick it off. :D

This looks like great fun. Brainstorming in 3D.

Wish I had the time to participate...

I used to play that game! I had to draw my own squiggles though (used to shut my eyes and hope I stayed on the paper!).

Having another crack at it but in 3D sounds like a lot of fun. I'll join in when I get some time/inspiration.

In the meantime, Bird would like to thank you for his new glasses! :)

Kate: Bird might go a little cross eyed wearing those. :) Nice one. I can't wait to see what else you come up with. I'm sure it will be very imaginative. :)

Paul: Well, it would be interesting to see what you'd come up with if you do find some time to squeeze one in. ;)

That could get quie uncomfortable to play Richard. You'd have a spike right in your chest when you played it. :jumpy:

Ha ha - yes I guess you would "suffer for your art". Perhaps it could be modified to allow the player to spin the guitar like ZZ Top used to.

Interesting Saul. Kind of hypnotic. Nice one! :)

Looks Good Steve! :)

Only a few hours left guys. Tomorrow I'll post a new squiggle. We'll have to figure out how to go about the voting. Any suggestions? Should be fairly easy this month as there aren't a whole lot of entries. I know next month there will be many more though. ;)
