Script Developers Meeting - Tuesday December 11th

Hey folks. Don't forget... 6 PM Caligari time Tuesday!

Hey 3dv... I copied this from one of your other posts... good info there!

As always everyone is encouraged to bring with you any questions, ideas, scripts, scripted objects, unscripted 3D objects, or whatever else you may like to share with us all together. There will be ample opportunity provided to all who wish to present anything, and anything you'd like to discuss or share there with us all is most welcome.

Even if you have very little or no understanding of trueSpace Scripting, Shared Space Development, or Immersive 3D Desktop Development, drop by anyway... it's always an interesting and fun experience and each of us, including you, make it so every time.

I hope to see you all there for this one, it will definitely be interesting and fun.

Thanks.

- 3dvisuals dude

Directions:

Directions for those WITH an existing truePlace password:

Option 1:

Go to the following web page and look for the "Scripting Live!" links for either truePlay or trueSpace then click the one you wish to use.
http://www.caligari.com/birdsofafeather.asp

Option 2:

Download the scripted objects which I created (in the following forum posts) and click them to be taken there.

For trueSpace 7.51, 7.5, and the TS Demo:

I created a new object for trueSpace7.5x users who are either unfamiliar with setting the Network Server and Portal Settings (the Demo users for instance) or are like me and just get tired of doing it manually when you are in a rush.

Just load this puppy into Workspace or any scene and then click on it, it will automatically (and harmlessly) reset your current Network Server and Portal Settings (which you can do yourself manually anytime if you wish) to match "The Scriptorium" where our Meetings are held, and it will bring up the standard Shared Space "Login" Dialog to connect you right to us.

For truePlay Users:

for truePlay users - go to the following thread and download the scripted scene there then load it in truePlay and click on the green book inside the scene.

Directions for those WITHOUT an existing truePlace password:

(1) Getting a Password and Username to enter truePlaces:

(Our Tuesday Night Meeting is held inside a truePlace Portal (#1212) and you will need both a Password and Username to enter there which is different from your Caligari Customer Password and Username. Also be sure to get your truePlace Password and Username during Caligari business hours well before the meeting begins)
http://cart1.caligari.com/web/trueplaymainreg.aspx

(2) Instruction Page on Port Address Settings in trueSpace 7.5x:

(Note that the following instructions show you how to set the portal entry point in trueSpace to the truePlace Meetingroom (tpportal 1111) where once you arrive you will find an easel with an image on it which says "click here to enter the Scriptorium," and one you click on that image you will be instantly transported to the actual Script Developers Meeting held in tpportal 1212)

(3) truePlace "Scripting Live1" Page: (with countdown timer in PST):
(This is the Caligari Countdown Timer and Info Page for our Tuesday Meetings)
http://www.caligari.com/ScriptLive.asp

(4) The "connect to shared space" icon in truSpace7.5x:

The "connect to shared space" icon in trueSpace7.5x looks like two Avatars facing each other (ie: sharing space).

When you are all set and ready to connect you just need to click the appropriate icon in trueSpace and then enter your truePlaces Username and Password into the Dialog Box which will then pop up, then hit the "connect" button on the Dialog Box.

See you there folks!

Same time same place folks!

MarkO mentioned in another thread that we'll be going Jousting! OK... who wants to be one of those little guys that picks up the horse ... um... well you know.... ok nevermind...

seriously. Sounds like Mark's got this goin on where you can hop on a vehicle (ok a horse in this case!), use the P button to pick up your joust (Joust, Not Javelins like last time please.... the ends are too sharp... :D ) And if you get your opponent they get thrown. Should be interesting!

I picked up the Music Box and made some mods to it. We can drop it in. Currently it is animated via keyframe but we want to script it instead. I am not sure what time I'll get there so be sure to Ping Mark and say, Hey! where's the Tunes man?!

Some food for thought regarding the scripting and animation aspect of the music box: I'll try to talk about this tonight:

With the LE (Link Editor), I renamed the box top object to something like BoxTop (Yeah I know, I am SOoooo original... ).

I also needed the 'jewel' and the letter 'B' on the box top to rotate along with the box top so I renamed them in the LE (can anyone guess? anyone? anyone?) to: (drum roll please...) BoxTop_B and BoxTop_jewel.

Then, in the LE, I selected all 3 of these, and clicked the Encapsulate in 3D icon, because I wanted them all to be a single object. When I did this, in the LE, the 3 objects were surrounded by a box with an empty title bar. I entered the name I wanted in the title bar.

The axes of this Encapsulated object were at the center of the music box. I switched to the model side of truespace to use the axes tool, to move the axes of the box top to the location of the hinge. Then the box top, 'B', and 'jewel' could rotate properly, as one.

Making sure this object was selected, I created a keyframe at frame 0, then went to frame 150 (to make a 5 second animation), rotated the box top to 90 degrees, then set another keyframe.

This can be done with scripting as well. I saved the Labs scene, yanked out all the stuff I didn't need, and kept the labdoors1 object. We can use this code as a basis for scripting the above described animation. I would like to see the difference in file size between the two versions.

Well, hope to see you there tonight!

OK folks...

I did not get a chance to play with the music box this week but I will next week.

Norm mentioned he would work on a script which would capture the dialog in the chat client window at some point.

This will be an excellent tool which will allow us to post the text chat for folks that could not make it to the meeting.
