Hi,

I've not visited the forums for a few months.

Any word on a plug-in which would allow a web-browser (IE7, Firefox or Opera) to play an .rcd file directly?

Thanks,

Are we any closer to an Internet Explorer plug-in for TruePlay?

I'd love to use a .rcd file directly as web-interface without having to download the TruePlay app!

truePlay is basically a cut down version of trueSpace. It has non of the creation tools, just the ability to view. I think it would be very difficult (nigh impossible) to transform it into a Browser plug-in. Norm, Tom?

While you guys are awaiting a response on this from The Big C, I was thinking about your request here and an important consideration came to mind...

If a web browser plugin is created to allow a person to imbed or link a trueSpace rcd-format file into a webpage in an inline frame for instance, and then have anyone with that plugin simply go to that site and explore that rcd file scene with functionality similar to truePlay, that will raise a potentially significant access issue in regard to those files which you may want to consider at length before creating such an open web access scenario.

The files will be loaded onto the hard drives of those who access that page via the plugin and from there may be loaded into trueSpace if one has it and copied or altered at will as the downloader with trueSpace sees fit.

If you have no related concerns about your rcd scene or rcd object security, privacy, or copyright, that's fine. If, on the other hand, you do have such concerns in relation to any given scene offered to the worldwide web in this manner you may want to carefully consider beforehand what webdesign measures you may employ to control all rcd scene access accordingly.

It's kind of like a new car dealer scenario... "Here's the keys... take her for a spin alone for a while." It's what they can do with it while you're not there that you may want to think about quite a bit before handing over the keys.;)

Sharing is great when it's intended, but we definitely need a way to protect our work. I hope Caligari will see the importance of this soon. Especially if they can work the web browser thing into 2.0.

Y'know, I have to apologize on that Délé, I remember seeing you refer to it in that really cool project you posted here a while back for the Torque environment, but at the time I just didn't understand the issue you were referring to and it's genuine importance to us all. I finally got it now, and you were right to "push" for it's attention all along as it has very serious potential implications for many of us.

For me, for instance, if I send a prototype scene to a prospective purchaser to examine overseas, and that prototype scene is one where I had to invest a great deal of time in preliminary work (or in cases where that prototype could involve any genuinely innovative aspects), due to the potential of having business models and/or scripts compromised within that given scene I must first take the precaution of taking a much deeper look into the laws of the recipient's country in this specific regard. That hasn't happened to me yet, but the likelyhood of it happening at some point down the road if this specific vulnerability remains so obvious is a factor worthy of heavy consideration in some cases for sure.

Consider me on your team in this regard now.:)

Has much recent progress been made on a web-browser Plug-In?

As ever, it is Caligari policy not to discuss products until they are immediately up for release. This means the question you ask can't be answered unfortunately, and could only be answered when and if such a thing was at the point of being released.

HTH!
