Got a question....
Thought about posting it in "6 or older" but thought it might get more attention here.
How do you UV something right? I have my castle. Everything is fine except the top. I can't just UV the top. (Remember this is version 3.2).
Thanks

I'm sure that there is a better way, but the way I would do it would be to select all 4 top faces and select Planer UV mapping, then adjust the size of they UV until it looks good.
Then select the faces that go right and UV them planer mapping. then the same with the faces that go left.
Hope that makes sense. |

If 3.2 won't let you UV a face selection like Kena mentions, you could try making the top faces a separate object then apply the planar UV mapping. |

Ok, thanks. It makes sense but 3.2 doesn't have that. I guess I better go with the facing.
I have redesigned the castle. Will try to post some pictures tomorrow. |

Ok. I am trying to get the scene together.
I will have to do a few smaller models as I go but I need to start.
You will note I change the castle (rook) design. Also the new design does not use individual blocks. I was resizing the blocks as suggested and my computer couldn't handle the 6000+ blocks going into it.
The large cubes are just place holders for hills I want in there. I still have to put a quarry.
I guess I better go over everything I am wanting (but probably will not complete).
The idea is a rook (which IS a castle) being built. In the carriage is the king and queen, across from them will be a bishop. On either side a knight.
So if I can do it I will have everything in a chess game present. (the builders being peasants (pawns)). I hope this isn't going to be considered by some as not sticking to the subject of "castle"... It really is, consider that the scene will contain the building of a castle.
Well here is a first pass on the beginning of a scene. I may have to change a lot from this point. I am not sure if I should deconstruct the castle a little more. |

Very nicely done.
Now if you add in a King piece you have a nice triple pun :D |

well.. the theme was "Castle" or palace, or whatever like that. You have modeled a "Castle". Therefore, it is well within the limits set. ;)
Good job on it too!!! :D |

pulling the scene together (2 days!)
Trying to just get all the action in. Doing a lot of posing and painting.
Will try to post a preview up to this point. I think I will have to change the camera angle in the end to see the people better.
I like that idea Davin. I had thought of the king piece and "castling" but hadn't really linked it like that. That would round the whole thing off lol.

Here is a preview of the scene so far.
You will notice a lot of test people. Also the horses aren't harnessed onto the carriage yet.
I wish I could work out a camera angle so the people could be seen better.
I may just include different snapshots around the scene and then just submit a main scene shot.
It has gotten to the point where TS crashes after a full render. So I have to save it each time. |

yes. It works well to have a "beauty render" and then have several "surround shots" for detail. The "Beauty render" gets posted for the voting thread with a link back to this W.I.P. so that people can just link in and see all the rest of your pictures. |

Here is my final posts in this MMC.
I would have liked a little more time but tonight starts sabbath so I have to turn it in now.
I had to drop a few things out of it (I didn't get the quarry as I would have liked). But overall I am very happy with it. I have only once before every tried to model an organic shape and it didn't turn out so well.
The fog in 3.2 turns all transparency (on the trees) to grey so I couldn't use it either.
Everything here was done in TS 3.2 (I think the grass texture is the only one I didn't adjust for use in this scene).
I am not sure how long it took to do this. I got busy last week and couldn't work on it much.
I sure did learn a lot more about TS (I had not used a number of the tools in it before).
The people and animals do have painted on faces (such as they are) but you can't really see them, I guess I should have made them darker to get it to show up.
The entire scene has 356,625 faces (of course most of this is in the people and animals since they required more smoothing (even with smooth shading).
Choose the best title (I can't settle on it).
"Remember this next time you sacrifice a pawn"
"Castling"
"The King and his Castle"
I kind of like #1 but it is rather long.
Ok. So my next post will be a nice large picture for enjoyment (lol).
Then my next will be my submission. |

Well it won't let me upload the image (1280x1024). So here is a link to it.
Modeled: TS 3.2
Render: TS 3.2
Time to render: 15-20 minutes
No post-processing.

Here is the submission for the MMC.
(800x600)
All the same (TS 3.2 modeling and rendering). This time though I did put it in psp and hit it with on sharpening pass (TS 3.2 made it to blurry with it's anti-alias).
Note: Arrgg! The forum doesn't allow an uncompressed 800x600 jpg (293kb limit). So I had to compress it :(
See the linked picture if you want a better look.
Thanks

lol. Know how you feel Mike; especially when it comes to competition submissions.
Very nice work by the way. I love the little touches like the horse rearing and its cart loosing its load. Dunno why but from your very first post this has always reminded me of Age Of Kings (RTS computer game). I mean that in a good way as that is one of my all time favourites.
Great image and great concept. Best of luck in the voting. |

good final render on this one - the UVs turned out very well I see. Like the composition as well. The extra figures give it a good balance for a "real-life" example. |

Thanks all.
I forgot to mention, the "guy" across from the king and queen is a bishop. So you have the king, queen, bishop, two knights and the pawns. (started heading that way so I thought I would get it in :D )
The next post will be wireframe snapshots from around the scene.
Thanks

I noticed you've left all your axis visible. I did that for a time. Really screwed my animations...
Aside from that, that's good organics...and that castle gave me my 'chess' image brainwave |

This brings a nostalgic tear to my eye - ah tS 3.2, it was good then and it's still good now.
Nice job on this. |
