I was taking some time to read through the new features of Photoshop 3, and their new extended version allowing the importing of 3D models that you can texture directly in photoshop. They have a list of programs that are compatible (trueSpace is not one) and a link to an sdk to write a plugin for additional support (hint, hint.) I'm also interested in upgrading to ts7.5 in the next 6 months and if I could combine these two products together in a more seamless fashion I'd be on cloud nine.

I have been wondering also. I frequent some forums that have video professionals on them, one of the schools of thought is that for graphics designer, illustrators, 2D professionals this feature will be useful. Expecting it to be BodyPaint3 is a tad bit unrealistic right now at this point.

Some of the other features of CS3 are pretty amazing though, Vanishing Point is now able to transport out 3D information to use in 3D programs and After Effects CS3. Another one I like is better 32 bit support with some of the layers tools, HDR merging has been worked on and now you are able to stitch together HDR images instead of just 8 bit images.

It will be interesting to see where all of this goes.

Do remember CS3 does not include this feature - only CS3 E (I think they call it) will have this feature. I believe pricing is in the $600 range for CS3, and $1,800 range for CS3 E - so that is a lot of money for the integration! Someone might want to check in and see what the actual prices are planned to be, this is just from memory from an early news article about it, so I could be wrong.

CS3 is the "regular" update to Photoshop that you would normally get. The 3D features are only included in this new version of Photoshop, which is almost like a new product.

Currently we have not looked into this possibility, having been focused on getting the core tools complete for tS7.5. We'll take a look at it - but its a pretty expensive piece of software, not sure how many of our users will be adopting it (we'd be interested to hear!).

Thanks!

Tom

That's a much better price than I had heard at its initial announcement! Which is a very good thing. That said, it is still quite a bit higher than the regular Photoshop, and possibly out of the reach of some.

It would interesting to know how many tS users are planning on getting that version, feel free to comment, it would be useful info for us to see.

Thanks!

Tom

You guys might find this UVE feature interesting:

5859

It doesn't allow realtime texture update like Maya's does. This only exports the UV map directly to your favorite paint program.

But maybe this is a sign of a future feature that would allow realtime texture updating from your paint program. :)

BTW, for Gimp users, it's important to use gimp-win-remote.exe instead of the main gimp executable because Gimp expects a different set of command line arguments being a ported Unix program.

The upgrade price to extended isn't bad.

I'm playing with the demo now as I type this. It can import Studio Max files, so you can export out an object from trueSpace in that format and drop it into photoshop. I did this with a die, and photoshop imported it in although the obj as it was exported out of trueSpace was pretty mangled. I'm also having trouble finding the 3D toolbar which should allow me to change lighting and object properties like texture and paint colors.

You know Jack that feature could be working soon. You run the batch file in Photoshop (save update) and all we need is TS to update the Jpg, Tiff, or Bmp file in it's UV Editor. We would see results immediately in workSpace.
Roman or TomG can you say 7.6?
This is with standard Photoshop and TS7.5.

I would upgrade to PhotoShop CS3 E if I knew if the models I make in TrueSpace 7.5 will work in it.

I am a owner of CS3 extended and will probably "play" with the 3d features after I have learned tS 7.5. Besides the "cool" factor lets keep in mind that the ability to texture a 3d object in PS is targeted for PS users who dont use 3d applications!.

Wigmo as your die example shows, the "native" texture editor built into a 3d app like tS is going to give better results for its native objects, hands down!

Your observations are right, the ability to modify your object after you place it into ps3 is basic. However, there are times where I render an object in ts just to knock it out in photoshop. Then there are times where I have had to modify my camera position ever so slightly and re-render to get the positioning in my document just right. So with Photoshop I can now just load in that object (as long as it comes in properly) and modify that at will, then change it to a smart object to apply filters or other effects to it. So there is a lot of benefit here as well.

I've had CS3 E upgrade for a few weeks now and it does support OBJ import.
So all you need to do is use the Luvv plug-in to export your object from trueSpace.

The feature I find very useful is the Video Layers. You can Render to File the
DX9 real time display and import into CS3 E as video layers. There you can use all the
tools in CS3 on video layers just like a static image.

This is one of the features I love in CS3E... Vanishing Point was a cool tool in CS2, CS3E is worlds better. Using a Digital Camera I can take several pictures of a real place, bring those single frame pictures into CS3, photomerge them into a single panorama photography, as seen in my first photo. This single photo can now be brought into the Vanishing Point Filter, in there I can create 3D planes, these planes can follow the basic shape of the contour of what I want to recreate in a 3D scene, simply export this scene into DXF, 3DS or After Effects CS3.

pict one is the pano I was working with

pic #2 is the pano in CS3

pic#3 is the final scene rendered in VRay and TS7.5...

I have buildings I did this way, stairs, furniture, appliances, streets, walls I am sure you can even create cut out people the same way. Very cool tool.

I want to look into the video features, I have seen a couple of tutorials done with it that are pretty cool... CS3e is a very amazing upgrade
