The textures look much better in the new versions. :)
Depending on how much time you have, it could help to dirty up the textures a bit, maybe add some moss at the base of the walls, or water stains from where the water runs down the walls, etc. Also depends on the style you're shooting for, though. ;) |

Working on the terrain.
Messed it up a lot by using smooth/quad divide.
I put a height map on top of a plain, and started dividing it then raising and lowering big blocks then, smaller and smaller... there used to be a plug in that would take a height map and do it for me, but I lost it over the years of re-installing windows.
I then made a mask by taking the an edge detect in PSP and using that for the angles where the snow is not.
I wasn't sure where the castle was gonna go until the end so I need to fix the mask for where the draw bridge is.
I have to correct a lot of bad polys and still need to work on the lighting and textures for the landscape.
Any way I am done until Wednesday night. |

Here are some screens I took while making the terrain.
I am just going to redo it and use sub division instead of smooth/quad divide.
Only I didn't save the object until I messed it up so I have to start all over from the beginning. |

I'm enjoying all the additional info you are sharing which shows some of the techniques you use - this can be really helpful for new comers. |

I made the terrain from scratch again for the final shot. Which I intended to render last night while I was sleeping, but when I got up this morning tS had a fatal error and could not finish rendering.
So I will render a lower quality final shot in between my full time job and my part time job. |

I added in a new texture layer for the dirt/mud.
I will continue on this after the contest because I want to complete the castle, I thought I might have had time since I was working only 40 hours a week at my new full time job instead of 60 like at my last full time job, but other things came up (had to fix one of my cars most of the month, clients wanted expanded requirements on contracts and I picked up extra shifts at my part time job to cover other people calling in sick). But don't feel bad for me, I will be down to just two jobs some time next month! |
