Haven't had much success with finishing these MMCs but i can't resist this one. Here's a first render and wire frame of the main tower of this castle. It'll be surrounded by other buildings and a wall, the whole fortress will be on a hill with ditches around it:

Very quick update, just trying to figure out the layout of the buildings. None of them are the finished ones just place holders....

normally, buildings leading up to a keep door are on either side of some sort of access path. I would either put one building right in front of the door, or move the one at the "bottom right" over a bit to allow clear access. |

Thanks Kena, i'm still not sure where to put the other buildings.
I'm Trying to avoid giving clear access. I remember seeing a documentary on Beaumaris Castle in Wales and one thing it pointed out was that when you got thru the main gate you were faced with a wall full of arrow loops, none of the entrances lined up so an army could be whittled down at each stage as it try to get in, the imperial castle in Kyoto is designed with similar features.
Thats kind of what i'm trying to do here, the buildings in the front are there to block access to the tower and provide resistance points for the garrison to fight back from. These two buildings are the main barracks for the garrison.
The two smaller buildings at the sides are/ will be an armoury and a swordsmith's shop.
there's going to be a gate house and towers around an outerwall too, i did have some drawings of this done to scan in but i can't seem to find them. |

Very nice work jayr. Dunno why, but as soon as I saw your images my brain instantly recollected me playing Thief, the "sneak 'em up" computer game from Looking Glass Studios. Can't wait to see where you go with this. |

Thanks Breech Block, i never played the thief games, i read a bad review of one that put me off, regret it a bit now though, maybe i'll look for them in a bargin bin in a games shop...
This is a test render of one of the watchtowers on the interior buildings, which have all changed shape since the last posting. The textures still need a lot of work so they're just temps on this one:

This is really coming out nice. Great detail on the watch towers and walk ways. I really like how you've done the roof tile. |

Thanks guys (and gals), this is something i've been meaning to start for a while now, it's been pottering around in my sketchbooks for a few months at least! i probably won't get the whole setting done before next week, there should be multiple defensive ditches at the base of a Tor and a forrest not to far away but i think i'll just get as far as the curtain walls!
Here's where i'm up to with the garrison buildings, i lost the walkway in a weird LE problem and i'm having a little trouble getting Simbiont and VRay to play with each other but it's getting there:

Interesting modeling approach Jayr. Sort of like building a scale model with cardboard and plaster. Very cool.
BTW, Symbiont and VRay aren't really compatible, basically it just renders out a bitmap that is applied for VRay to render. So you need to UV map the model for it to render nice in VRay. You'd really be better just rendering the Symbiont texture out to an evenly (constant) lit plane then using that as a bitmap texture -- which would give you more control how it displays in VRay. |

Thanks Jack, i know it's just the colour map that gets rendered in VRay but some textures were disappearing somewhere accross the bridge, you can see it in the bottom stone, thats textured the same as the ones above it but it's rendered blank.
I do want to use vray with this one though so i'm probably going to use image maps in the end, like you said it lets you fine tune it a lot more. |

finished most of the modeling for the garrison building now, the rest will be copies of what is present now after i've done the texturing. I've added arrowloops/ windows and all the tiles:

Started to add the textures, a bit 'samey' right now (probably because there's only 2 textures on there!) but i'll be adding more variation soon. just the wood and white-wash textures to go....

Looking good Jayr. :)
You're model will also be more portable to other apps with bitmapped textures. |

right...
Won't be able to much on this tomorrow which means i've got tonight and friday morning to finish this (10pm EST is about 5pm in the UK so i won't be home from work to do anything with it)
I've just got bits of the main keep, the towers and the tor for the fortres to sit on so i should just do it in time.
Should have a few moer pics to post tonight. |

ok just a quick screen grab to show where i'm up to right now. it looks a 'Toy Town' with the bright temp textures but they'll be replaced just before rendering. Just the walls and drawbridge to go:

looking good! It's always nice to see pre-textured scenes. It makes the final render so much nicer. and it makes it easier to see what an effort you make doing textures! ;) |
