I know this is a feature request forum but, in a roundabout way, it might generate requests.

This was going to be a poll but it would never work as there are too many options.

Anyway, the idea is this: what single feature found in another package would tempt you away from using tS as your primary tool? Just one otherwise it becomes a long rant or wish list.

To get things started I will offer mine: Hair.

I know we have this in Vray and Dribble but it is not exactly full featured. You only have to look at the hair tools in Carrara 6 (free in this months 3D Artist mag) to see what can be achieved with just a few more options than we have, even in a free program. Even if VE were too be a focus in future versions of tS, a good hair/fur generation system would still be useful for vegetation in the scenes.

So, that is mine...what single feature missing from or 'poorly implemented' in tS found in another program would tempt you away from tS.

It is just for fun...;)

Aww, That's because you're Bald splinters. :D

Just kidding! :D :D :D

I dunno; I'll have to think about which feature.

Now that is cheating, not only is that a tS product (6.6, and I never referred to tS7.6) but it is definitely not one feature...

I don't use the new TS as my primary tool because of workspace...it's broken up the program and what with all this new way of loading files and scripting and the perpetual lag/freezups it causes just drives me up a tree

You may call it the program but I just call it one big feature because that's how it's been formed out as, it seems just like an incipient plugin that don't form correctly

Hope that counts

Fair point Weevil.

I was hoping that this thread might generate a list of features that stop making tS a killer app and, in turn, hope that Caligari look to putting some of them in the next version.

I´m working with pretty many applications now because they all have

a special use and each has a few features that make work faster

but as an example the last software that i added to my toolkit is Modo

and I love the image ink technology. You take a photo and spray it onto your 3d work.....Much easier then fiddling around with uv maps and Photoshop.

but there so many apps that i use I could go on and on but i did that already......;)

But they dont tempt me away just some aditional options that make work faster..

well, maybe not a 'feature' per se but, how about, Actively Updating the application?

If I have to pick one, just one, I would say, fluids, at low cost.

I could be tempted away with a candy bar...but

How about lip syncing or morphing?

Of course hair was already mentioned but I'm sure you meant "dynamic" hair?

Well, the reason I have always loved tS (since 4.3) is the simple interface. I never use workspace as all those tabs and windows really irk me and cut down on my primary view. I'm hoping that when the bridge is done away with the whole thing will be cleaned up. If not, I can forsee at some future date I will split my 3D work into seperate applications. By that I mean an app that can only create models and as such is much leaner/cleaner and then import them into another app for lighting and rendering. Having said all that Froo's object importer/exporter really has me intrigued and that may be something that finally makes me go over to the "darkside."

I was hoping that this thread might generate a list of features that stop making tS a killer app and, in turn, hope that Caligari look to putting some of them in the next version.

First and foremost...Truespace's instability, the bugs and the way it falls over a lot is a real pain

Well we all know what the killer 5 are

Hair
Cloth
Fluids
Particles
Lip sync facial features

Truespace has hair and cloth but it's basic, particles even more basic due to the lack of simple realtime generation, for example in maya it only show a small portion of the particles for speed, same with hair, need more stronger controls on them

But Frootee has fluidsim, and if the hair/cloth can be expanded and be able to work more seamlessly with modelside, then all hunkydory, and better particle generation. If the FX packs and conversion packs are no longer being sold, can't they include them in the next version?

Now facial animator has apparently taken a step back, the thing I found wrong with it in number 6 was that is was so damn hard to animate, easy for stills, just, more slider controls and none of this "recording" keyframe business...what that does is just make characters change expression at the same speed...thats not good for animation

They've fixed the bones apparently...but it's workspace...so I can't use it, the 6.6 interface isn't very strong, more intuative controls and it needs animation smoothing and the ability to copy keyframes over from one object to another, its impossible to work with and I'm still struggling with Kate O'donnell

But, while i love TS's interface, the main offput is in fact the interface, it's too "marmite"ish, I loved 6.6 because it was a giant window...as opposed to maya which puts me off enormously, text menus might be a thing to consider as an alternative to picture icons for those who don't agree with me (or breech by the looks of things) though

File conversions....more of them and stronger exporters

While its ambitious thinkin...if Caligari does away with workspace and just make their D3D views more powerful...then I see no reason to use another program (EDIT: not "not to use another program...."), but that said, they had to test their idea of workspace somewhere, and NEW users like it, and that seems to be Caligari's market....especially as "reutrning buyer" factor is now removed since it's now free and v-ray isn't available. Turespace has an air of a "gimmicky" program like the Wii...it has room for serious endevours but ultimately it's for a bit of fun for joe bloggs who wants to have a dabble in it. Don't get me wrong TS is the ONLY one I use...it is just a tad frustrating though

As a hard surface model program TS does it very well, as other things it falls down a lot...suppose in a nutshell it just needs improving and getting rid of the nasty niggles

Ok ok.... teachers never let you get away with profound responses....

multilayer 3d paint tools with configurable texturing capable of being extended to multiple graphical output file formats.....

I wish me a working bones system. Current solution is weak, complicated as hell, unstable and buggy up to useless.

Besides that, I wish me the tools FULLY and WORKING implemented. I could fill this list here with every tool that`s available in the Workspace. Name me the tool, and i name you minimum one bug or quirk for it.

I have no need to be tempted away from ts. My two main apps are ts and messiah 3d. I do all my modeling in ts. I do animation for videos mostly in messiah 3d. I am doing some realtime stuff too and use ts animation for that because messiah does not have a reliable output solution, their directx export is baaad. It is hit or miss. Also, With ts I can store all my morph targets for messiah in one character file with ts's morph's feature. I put the morph in, slide the slider to where I want it, then export as obj. Works great.

Not to mention several other tools that save me, the poly reducer on workspace side really works great and to there is no other free solution to that. The mesh collapser on model side tidys up my model and gets rid of the tons of material groups that would appear in messiah and reduces it to only groups by actual materials. Truespace scale is actually pretty much the same as messiah3d as well, so it comes in handy to scale items. I use vray material editor all the time too, I am not a fan of the dx material editor, too hard to use, but the vray material editor is the easiest way I found to paint my groups that I can then add the messiah materials to.

I am very pleased with TS, I really don't see why people say they are switching software and all this. Just add software to your toolset, but ts does many fine things, no need to uninstall it. And its free!

Consider the original aim of the thread to be a bit of blue sky thinking, more of a 'what could enhance tS that it hasn't got'. I have no doubt that many users are happy with tS but a lot are not and I see no harm in lookiong for constructive ways to improve it.

I have to admit, I find it hard to believe that you would not choose to 'add' anything to tS, that it does everything you need, but that is your choice.

Oh things I would add, well a working ik system for one, that's one I been waiting on a long time. And audio in the timeline. Those would be a refreshing start. :) Of course there are many things I would like to see added. The things it doesn't do now I do in other apps. But yes I wish for more funcionality in ts as we all do.

I think that the worst thing in TS is the number of crashing times! I always feel insecure using it, always asking my self: this opperation will work this time? Does not? What am I going to do if it doesnt work?

If TS could improve something in a near future, instead of add new features and more new bugs, just try to make the program more solid and functional. I would be happy alredy :jumpy:

Easy to use and stable software for an affordable price (<500$) and solid features one would expect in 2009. Doesn´t have to be rocket science. It seems strange that it´s getting harder and harder these days to find a software that fullfills those basic requirements.

Particles have been around for decades, bones, IK, layers etc. as well.

Blender seems to be a real alternative but we know the drawbacks...

Maybe I just became too picky over the last years of disappointment :D

I just did this tutorial in another package... when WS side can do this it will be my favorite tool again. So it's not what can lure me away, it's what can bring me back...

It is a shame the price of 3D tools anymore... 1000.00 seems to be the starting point anymore for the basic packages, than it rises steeply from there.
