No. I can't. But here's a new one from me. I'm really hoping to step all aspects of my 3D up a notch. It's an F-18... c varient. I'm just going to post the pictures for now because the forum booted me off and deleted my message when I clicked post and I just went. ....ehhhh. So. I'll edit this first post when I re-write it because there was a wee 'help' indicator on there Critical hats on people, picky as you like. Be picky...execpt the cockpit...that's not finished

I copied my own hangar? Yes. I needed an environment test...fast...not the render fast...that I didn't get... But yeah...be picky...

That is a lovely bit of modelling Weevil, no crits at all for a WIP.

Oh, and I know the feeling about the focus...I don't know which project to tackle first and then contracts or my 'real job' get in the way...:o

Looks like I'm not the only one, a little more embarresing for me though considering I don't actually have any other commitments...

Unfortunately. I've now got to model a pilot...*groan* I hate organics. And unfortunately. That's the thing that's just popped up...Ugh

Cheers Splinters

Ever thought of buying a model or looking for a freebie? When I need a boat floating a mile in the distance I have nothing against using a stock model.

Unless, you are doing this purely to develop your modelling skills....you could also be developing your google skills....;)

I'd rather not use a different model if I can help it...I fell like I'm cheating...But then, I just need the head and the basic body. For the images I've got lined up I won't show much of him...

*One google search later.*

Aha! I have a helmet (he's flying in a crusader by the way...strange things...)

Nice job! :)

Um... if you're using TS 7.6, there are some lo-res figures supplied with it. Use the library browser. There are three libraries... (Avatar - Female, Avatar - Male and Avatar - Justin). They have facial morphs on them and you can double-click their clothing into place, then boolean the clothing to the body mesh (not to the actor). No flight suits but maybe you can use something there. :)

I made them so if you have problems let me know. :)

Wow, really great work Weevil, very impressive stuff. Would have loved to see this progress from an early build. I'm not too familiar with the Hornet but your model looks quite spectacular with a fantastic level of detail. I don't know how much of the texture work is complete so will reserve my comments for a later stage.

dude! You look plenty focussed on this one to me! That's a tidy looking bit of modeling and for sure you had to concentrate and focus to make it. Nice work.

Only crit - Hanger floor's too clean;):D

Thats a beautiful Hornet, Weevil. Im new to the boards and am slowly trying to pull away from Blender and see how I can do with Truespace. A model like yours is definately a motivator.

How much was done in TS and what versions? What other software if any? How long have you worked on this? What renderer?

Right...well....page 2...didn't see that coming. Well first off, thanks guys and second, to the individual questions/comments:

@Heidi. Well, I HAVE 7.6 but I'm not fond of it...really, I prefer 6.6 (which is what I used for this model)Really, all I need is the helmet, but thanks anyway, I'm goign to have to find some better reference images or a model to 'trace'.

@Jack edwards. I can see what you mean but I think that's actually the engine geometry, I'll give you a closer look...below. Unless you really do mean there's a warp in the outer part of the engine. I'll look into that

@Breech Block. The images you're about to see are the completed textures. No fancy lighting though :D

@W!zard I like to keep my things neat and tidy. Even if it involves breaking out a virtual mop from time to time (and no tire marks on my clean floor).

@Ussmidway: Thanks man. I personally think that you'd have better luck with TS...but then I might be biased

@Finis. I did it all in TS 6.6. The textures (or just the bump maps really, I suck at texturing) were made in Paintshop pro.
Really I've worked on it for about 24 odd combined hours (spread out over a week)
I can't really say much about the renderer. The bog standard one I guess. I don't have renderosity or any of that...so I can't really haelp you there

@Igor You know. That wasn't quite the first my mind...nor was it the last...but I think I got the tail insignia right there...everyone has something to show for their 1k

New stuff:
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i192/Weasle_01/f-1801-1.jpg
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i192/Weasle_01/f-1802-1.jpg
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i192/Weasle_01/f-1803-1.jpg

And the next environment test, fighter's way too low but I think I got the lighting right, another terragen collaboration
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i192/Weasle_01/test1.jpg

More to come...

I think I recognise part of that hangar! ;)

Very cool looking, especially in the hangar, only thing I didn't really like was the wheels, and that may just be down to the resolution and anti-aliasing?

Can the Hornet really carry three Sidewinders on a single pylon? I've never seen triple pylons used for anything other than fairly small dropped ordnanace like the smaller cluster bombs - I thought Sidewinders were usually mounted singly or in pairs...

Critical hats on people, picky as you like. Be picky...execpt the cockpit...that's not finishedd an environment test...fast...not the render fast...that I didn't get... But yeah...be picky...

Fantastic work weevil, she's a real beauty. Most of the problems I foresaw in your earlier post regarding the textures you seem to have realised yourself. i.e. the addition of various insignia\decals and correcting the orientation of the USA star near the cockpit.

However, putting my super critical head on, I would have to say that I think your model is let down by the low poly tyres and their texture. The tyres have some distinctive straight edges. In addition, being carrier borne, you think the tyres would be a bit more scuffed\worn than your current texture portrays. Furthermore, your panel lines look a little “stuck on”. Do they have a corresponding bump map? It may just be the reduced res off your image. I know there is nothing more frustrating than producing a high quality render and then having to slaughter it in order to be able to comply with the file size limitations of the forum. And last but not least, I would take another look at the textures you have used on the engine thrusters and carry them on inside the model. See attached piccie.

But, like I said, that is with my super critical head on and should not in any way detract from what really is a superbly detailed model and a very fine achievement.

HTH

PS: If you are going to continue displaying the model inside a hanger environment, some detail you might want to consider adding are chocks for the wheels, flight safety pins (large dayglo canvas strips attached to locking pins that prevent any accidental movement of parts in storage\transit) and, as you are showing the aircrafts lights on, some external power generator.

I think I knew that pilot when I was in the Air Force, a real banana head.

Superb job, it belongs on the Caligari wall of modeling fame. :)

Right...Well. What can I say...This thread is having trouble staying with all these castles...

Looks like I may have to make a castle...

Breech Block. I never knew the engine did that (and the tailplane carried on at the end) and I'll see what I can do with the tyres.

@Nez. I'm a fan of recycling don'tcha know ("the possibilites are endless")
On the sidewinder front. I know they can carry two, but I saw three once...somewhere...Better make it two to be sure. But three just makes it look...grrrrr. The other missile, well I'm guessing it's an anti-ship missle, becuase I nicking it off a sea harrier...Well...whatever works...

Oh yeah, I found this floating on the web while out searching, I love the background on this...

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i192/Weasle_01/Final1-1.jpg

I don't how the hell I got the vector like quality to the second one but for added impact...I rendered it huge.
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i192/Weasle_01/Final1-1.jpg

One of these will be entered into the 'official' contest, which, is popular demand, I've also done the pilot, up close it's pant but it does the job. Not that I want to cheapen this any.

I'm also getting to the end of this project, so as promised I will start a new one, updating it and walking through it as I go. Now it's up to you which one you want...

You have
A) The f-14 Tomcat
B) The F-4 Phantom
C) The F-16
D) The Gr-1 Tornado.

If you don't know what any of these are, google search it or take a wild guess.

EDIT: Will it be any benifit rendering this in ts 7.6 from 6.6? I've only got the standard package so there's nothing new to add to it. But will there be any benifits?

I'd like to see the phantom then the tomcat (who says we'd let you off easy by just picking one!).

Very nice work on this first one, decidedly awesome. The top one has a great photo real look, the bottom one a great illustrated look, great to see two such styles achieved withe one model.

Just one more word AWESUM :) hope I spelled that right...

Keep up the good work, now more football!!!

Gotta agree with Tom. The first picture is a better image for the competition whilst the second shows the model better. Also, like he said, F4 then Tomcat.

Personally, before submitting the image for the competition, I would add a couple of particle generators to the wing tips to create some vapour trails and another to the engines to create a heat haze effect. That would help integrate the model into the background plate a lot more.

Either way, this is still an excellent piece of work and I wish you well in the competition.

It's about time I let you in on this eh? What I initially set out to do was to make an image that would have a shot at making it into the 3D world gallery

Very ambitious yes what with all the Maya and Z-brush and whatever users out there but should I get it in there, it would look great on a CV. And besides. Never try, never know. And then there's the monthly gallery contest here. I'm not going to enter for the prize or anything but for the same reason as above.

Oh yeah, if you haven't guessed by now. That first image (the one that looks like a postcard. This one:
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i192/Weasle_01/postcard1.jpg
I made that. I added the silly little bits of writing to make it look 'fan' made, the intention was basically. If someone said, 'hang on, that's not a picture!' then I've done it wrong.

@breeach block. Which iage are we talking about here? If it's the bottom one then yes I can see your point, but the top one wouldn't have any, I wouldn't say it's that high up. I considered adding afterburners to one or two of them but I decided against it. Looking at these:
http://www.aeroflight.co.uk/types/usa/boeing/fa-18/f%2018%20hornet%20fairford%201991.jpg
You don't see any haze unless it's close to something immediately in the background. Like this
http://www.richard-seaman.com/Aircraft/AirShows/Dayton2003/F18f/F18fTakingOff.jpg

I left it out based on that but what I'll do is render it twice and then see which is the better one

Very impressive work Weevil and great to see an attempt to get in 3D World which, as you rightly point out, is dominated by 3DS, Maya etc. although there is usually about 90% of the images using Vray...:D

Well I've just submitted both my images. We'll let the judging panel decide. I'm more fond of the second one than the first one but then the crowd says first...

I've entered the same description for both of them, (which is ust explaining about the image right?)

@Splinters. Weeell, I'm not banking on anything but it would be nice. Pity I don't have V-ray at all...
