Hi everyone, I know I'm a total newbie, and I know none of my stuff compares to what you all can do, but I am proud of myself. May I present to everyone, my very first 3D object!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v281/AnitaAngelo/LavaLamp_00001.jpg
^_^ This took me about an hour to do, I was surprised how quickly I was able to do this. All it is is simple shapes, a couple of custom colorings, the metal balls to make the 'lava' and a failed attempt at adding a spotlight to make the 'lamp' look lit.
I'm proud of me, I think it's good for someone whose never done 3D art before!
I openly welcome critiques and tips on how to improve myself. I am anxious to learn, and I am willing student and will do whatever it takes to make this into a great piece of art. I'm very interested in how to get the 'lamp' part to light up, so if someone wanted to help me get that down, that would be great!
I haven't decided what I want to do for a background, or even how I would go about making a background, but I figured one step at a time is best. |

Go Marie go...
What goes with a Lava lamp... hum... I'm thinking old coach with a blanket to hide the old beat up fabric of the coach below... Psychedelics poster on the wall behind, and a 60's vintage TV set and you should just about have the perfect Lava Lamp environment :) |

You know, that would be a great idea! That's a lot of work, but it's something to work towards! Alright, next step: research old 70s posters and see if I can recreate it in the program! |

Every thing you do at this point is going to push your skills further, so you should try to do things you enjoy making/creating. A room might sound very hard at first, but just like your lava lamp they are nothing more than a whole bunch of things grouped together. You can make the room at complicated as you choose... or just a few simple items to get the feel of what you want others to see.
Posters and walls can just be a plane with a simple texture of them. A couch need not be anymore complicated than placing some cubes together to create the look of what a couch may look like. Learn to look at things, to see the shapes in things around you and than you will find it easier to model things.
I can't wait to see what you do.
Good luck!

Nice going Marie, not bad for your first object. I only did a reflective sphere for my first object and it took an hour to render. Things have certainly gotten better.
To make your Lava Lamp look more realistic I would consider making it taller. For your poster I would look at Black Light Posters of Jimmy Hendix or a big Peace Sign.
If you want to really get in the mood, put on bell bottom pants, earth shoes, smoke a banana peal and roll in the mud, ahhhh the memories... |

quick couch model, done in the Workspace side. It is nothing more than 4 cube primitives that I made, scaled and moved to where I wanted them... Instant couch. I am sure you could do better, this was just a very quick example of how to look at something that may seem complex and than break it down to simple pieces...

Thanks everyone.
RichLevy: I see what you mean. It's just like in 2D drawing, I need to look at my object and break it down into its basic elements, except now I have to think in cubes and spheres instead of squares and circles. We have an old couch down in my basement from when my parents were first married, I may spend some time sketching it out (since I can't bring it up to the computer) first, and then I can look at the picture for reference. I can probably even use the paint mode to try to recreate the weird floral pattern that's on it!
Steinie: XD Not a bad idea, if I can find a pair of bell bottoms! They went out of style before I was born! (Well, maybe, maybe not...I was born in '82). I see what you mean about taller too. Any tips on how to light it up? |

It's really not fair, Steinie and I are in the age group that actually used these things first hand... err.. well when they were first "in"... now they are very retro :) Groovy man, just letting my freak flag fly man... it's all far out to me... Disco's dead man... Down with the man!!!
Oh yea, I still got it :D uh huh.

I copied Steine's reflective sphere for my first object, but it didn't reflect and it wasn't very spherical.
Good job for your first 3D object. |

RichLevy: *lmao* I'll admit, my sister has a 'glitter' lamp she won down at the arcade at the shore. I should ask her to borrow it so I look at it for reference. :jumpy:

MarieBergantz, you did very well with the lava lamp! you should see my very first picture.... I think it's safely lost by now :D. you obviously have talent.
I find the internet a great place to get modeling Ideas. You could take this chest and use it in a "yard sale" or just put it in a room corner to put your lava lamp on.

Nice first object Marie - but unfortunately I have to tell you that you're doomed - actually double doomed! Firstly you're doomed to a life-long addiction with making 3d things and secondly you're doomed to all the hazy sixties nostalgia trips of all the aging ex-hippies in these forums - I see a few of them have already commented :D.
There's nothing very 'ex' about my hippyness though - we have three Lava Lamps (red blue and yellow), two Plasma Balls,, a fibre optic lamp and more candle holders than you could point a stick at - oh yeah, and a telephone shaped like the Starship Enterprise!!
Welcome to the forums - hope you'll stick around for a while. If you can tolerate the Hippy jokes you'll find it's a good bunch here.;) |

kena: Thanks a million! I will defiantly use those to help find inspiration for the room!
butterpaw: Thank you very much!
W!ZARD: ^_^ Thanks. I was pointed to this site by a cousin of mine who is a 3D game designer (If you've ever played any of the Tycoon games, you've played with the stuff he's made). I did a lava lamp because I thought it would be fun and easy to do, though I can already see how much I have to work on (I need to add a switch, make it taller (like someone suggested), and possibly add a chord to it too).
And on another note. O.O I want your Enterprise phone! I'll bet it's NCC1701A or B! I have a model of D, and a poster of E. ^^; It would looks so cute next to my Picard and Data figurines! |

Nice work Marie. Not bad at all for your first model. I look forward to seeing more. :) Before long you'll be looking at objects in the real world and seeing in your mind how the wireframe would look if you modeled it. After a while, it really makes you see the world in a different way...lights and shadows...how things move, etc. ;)
Welcome to the world of 3d. :) |

Yah that looks pretty good Marie! Looking forward to seeing the progression on this.
Hm... lighting...
paint the inside bottom of the object a yellow-white color to brighten it up a bit. For the glass, hm... add maybe a slight yellow-white tint to it to simulate light, but keep it transparent of course.
THe blobs... hm... is it possible (without VRay) to add SSS (sub-surface scattering)? That would make them look more like lava/plasma. I remember Parva made a 'marzipan baby' and posted on the forums here; not sure if the scene file is available for review. But do a search on that word here: Marzipan. And you should find that thread. |

You mean like Railway Tycoon? Man, that used to be one of my favourite games. Props to your cousin! :-) |

Yep. Railroad, Zoo, and Roller Coaster. He just finished work on Civilian:Revolution, which is coming out for DS, PS3, and XBox360.!
EDIT: I made some improvements, what do you think?

My family are busy playing Civ Revolution on the 360, collecting all the achievements (well, up to King level anyway, haven't progressed to Emperor and Deity yet). Always liked Civ, way back to the first version (I used to play it on the Atari ST), though I've not got into playing Revolution.
The Tycoon games are popular with the family here too, Rollercoaster and Zoo.
The wax was a problem if you broke the lamp, it could stick to you and burn quite badly I seem to remember hearing.
The virtual one here is looking really good! I never did have one though I wanted one, been tempted to get one in recent years but haven't done so yet, I'll just stick with virtual ones hehe.
Will be interested to see how this one progresses.
Thanks!

Wow! This brings back memories. I did a lava lamp as one of my first projects, too! Definitely a good object to make to get a handle on the tools in trueSpace. Looks great so far Marie. Keep us posted. :)
I found the gallery post I had my lamp in. 1999! So long ago...

LOL! Yep it's NCC 1701A - and it looks great next to our Borg Cube beside the 3 dimensional chess set, the Voyager model and so on.....
I can see you're gonna fit in here just nicely!

Sweet ^_^ Trekkies Unite!
T.T On a side note, I tried to be in TNL last night, and so the environment and everything got changed in my truespace. When I went to open my saved file of the Lava Lamp to work on it this morning, I had an unpleasant surprise!
I discovered that only the object that was clicked on was saved! T.T My lava lamp is gone! (I only have the glass piece, the stand and the lava and the cap are all gone!) :( I have to start from scratch!
T.T I am very sad. |

A trick I learned a while back when saving because I lost my share of objects this way too.
Save the object and save a scene.
The good news is the next one you make will be better!:) |
