Your Lava Lamp looks good! :) I always was enchanted by lava lamps, although they're not really from my time either (I was born in '83), I remember a while back they where selling them again as retro objects and I would stare at them in shops for a while... Always wanted to buy one but never got round to doing so hehe. :)
My first 3D object was a simple katana sword and the only really good thing I can say about my katana attempt was that it resembled a katana after rendering... :) Not that I've gotten that much better since tho!
Sad to hear you lost your model! :( I've always found it easiest to save what I'm working on as a scene even if its just one grouped object or just a single object and only save to an object format when I'm ready to export and import it into another scene.
It's so easy to miss one part of your mesh when selecting everything especially when you have small parts in your mesh and when you just want to do a quick save while working on the model you dont really want to worry about selecting all the subparts of your model. :) |

try looking in your deleted items folder... as TS saves a scene or object, it puts the old save there. |

Thanks guys. I was planning on re-doing the base as one solid piece anyway, I guess this is a good excuse to try something different.
I didn't realize there was a difference between saving object and saving screens. I guess I should finish watching the tutorials...>.>
kena: Where is that? I can't seem to find it. |

Oh, I thought you meant it was something in TrueSpace. No, there was nothing in there...>.> Just some song files I was getting rid of. |

darn. Oh, well... it was worth a try. Don't forget to save your scene and objects next time. I guess I'm just in a habit of doing that because I work with computers for a living :D |

I wouldn't build it as a solid piece - all you need to do is Encapsulate in 3D and then save. This makes it "one object" but as a group, leaving each part separate inside the group. Best of both worlds in many cases!
Then when saving, it saves the whole group. Saving an object will only save the selected object though, naturally. Save as scene to capture multiple ungrouped objects.

Hey Marie:
I do not know if you noticed but there is an older tutorial making a Lava Lamp and includes Physics.
http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts5/Courses/NewSimulatingWorld.asp?Cate=Training&Subcate=Older (http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts5/Courses/NewSimulatingWorld.asp?Cate=Training&Subcate=Older)
Would be cool to make a real time version in the new and improved Workspace. :) |

trueBlue: Ah, I see. Thanks for the tip, I'll check it out.
TomG: That sounds like a plan. Like I said before, I didn't realize that there was a difference between saving an object and saving a scene. ^^; Like I said, I should have finished watching the tutorials.
kena: I am an notorious saver. I have everything saved on my hard drive and at least one other jump drive. My important stuff, like the music I compose, is on at least 2 jump drives. I just didn't realize that there was two different ways of saving in this program! |

I'm no expert for sure on TrueSpace but one thing I learned was to save often and I do this from the model side by using the save scene as command and use as number as the last character of the file name: ex: sceneName01.
The next time I use the save scene as, TrueSpace will automatically increment the number by 1. I save every few minutes and after completing something I don't want to do again. I also set up a directory for each project that I am working on. See attached image for example of my file typical file saves. TrueSpace crashes often and often for no apparent reason. Note how cole the times are between each saves. |

Fahembree,
Your certainly not using the workSpace side if your crashing often. If you are then I would start reporting those crashes. Your showing saves after only 3 minutes work.
There are only a couple ways for me to crash workSpace which I reported. I no longer see the need to save as often as you show. |

I did say that I wasn't an expert.
When I do model on workspace side I always go back to the model side to use the 'save as command' so that I can easily increment the saves. Old habits are hard to break. On the workspace side there is no save as command to increment the saves like there is in the model side. Additional I was confused as to the what all the different save
options are in workspace side when I first tried to save, so I decided to use the command on model side that I was familar with and have stuck with it since. Even if ts did not crash I like to have incremental saves as sometimes things happen that one does not always realize until later and undo seems to work for only a couple of clicks, and sometimes not at all. I don't have Vray so I can't render from workspace side and that's another reason I use model side. Also I don't understand the D3D material editor on the workspace side and I haven't found the manual all that helpful or been able to locate any tutoral videos on creating D3D materails on the workspace
side. The videos that I have seen, seem to be for TS70, not ts75. It would seem like since the material editor is totally different from model space side that there would be more info on this. Maybe that's because I don't have V-Ray?? Does the material editor in workspace side look different depending on whether V-Ray is installed or not? I thought I saw a video on V-ray and they were using the model side material editor. |

Workspace Library's saves in increments too with Date, Time, Object count, Vertices, Faces, File size, and Descriptions, which is available within the tooltips. I always right click and select Insert As within the library as in this case RsScn. Personally I would not save my tS7.6 Workspace scenes (RsScn) to an older tS6.6 Model scene (scn) file. |

I guess that I just missed the obvious, and that is if you want to save you don't use 'file save command', but instead you right click and use 'Insert As'. After about a half hour of searching I was able to find where the files were being saved. Some how I just like having more control over where files are saved and the Insert As does not provide such control. |

Note that saving from Model side will destroy / lose any workspace side specific data, so things like workspace SDS, morphs, skeletons, DX9 materials, perhaps even settings for real-time spotlights etc, would be lost on saving.
So working in workspace then going to Model side to save is not recommended - you may not load back just what you had created.
You can create your own library place and point it to your chosen folder on your HD, which means you'll know exactly where the files are being saved using the workspace libraries, this is exactly what I do (that way, I can easily reload them into a new version of tS, this was important during beta testing where I had new install folders all the time, but by creating a library place pointing at my chosen folder "tS7 Projects" I could quickly access all my saved stuff, AND I knew exactly where it all was on my HD).
You can also use File -> Save As to save from workspace, if it doesnt auto update the number you can easily do that manually with the safety of knowing you arent losing workspace specific data.
As a final idea (just to show how flexible the workspace is!) you could create a save script in the LE and make a button or even icon for it.
HTH!

Well it does in a way... You can create a new library and point that at the folder you want to save it in, then you can just use the Insert command on that library and it'll put it in the designated folder.
However I'm not a big fan of using libraries for saving/loading either, call me old fashioned but I prefer to use the save/load dialogs as well! :) |

I rebuilt my lava lamp, did a bit of changing with the textures (XD I discovered the 'metals' library'). Tah-dah!

good sheen to the "lava", but if you could color it a complimentary color that would make it more realistic. |
