I thought that since I did so well with running last month's poll that I thought I would work on this month's challenge. Since I get a whole three weeks to work on it, I figured I would try a miniture fairy village. Starting is the hard part, but I figured that I would use the opurtunity to show people how I make mushrooms.

Start with a sphere - go to the side view and go to point edit. Make sure that the select through icon is selected and grab everything just below the center line and start re-sizing to get the shape of the parts of the mushroom.

Then I raise the stem to just below the Top of the shroom and raise the bottom of the stem so it goes up into the flare of the stem.

Next, I will make minor adjustments to the curve of the stem and I will have my mushroom.

I lost my scene when I had a power flux that rebooted my PC.

so I had to rebuild my shroom. here is my new first one.

Fortunately, I had only just started on the little fairy house, and it only takes about 10 to 15 min to build a shroom.

Sucks about your PC..but I like the first shroom better. I also like the texture on the first one.

yeah, I like the texture from the first one better too, so I switched the second one to that.

so... Here we have a hut that any woodland fairy would be proud to live in.

The hut is made from an 8-sided cylinder. I used Boolean extrude to make the inside and top with an added "tip" to get the top of the roof. the door and windows were Boolean subtracted.
The floors were made form 8-sided cylinders too. then the floors and roof given leaf texture and the sides given bark texture. I plan on using different barks and leaves for my little village.

Just for fun I decided to play a bit with mood lighting. Looks fairly good so far.

For some reason...I'm seeing mushrooms becoming very popular...Better stake your claim to them

Sucks about your PC man...But then...May as well brush up on your mushrrom modelling skills! Everyone's a winner in a strange little way

question

Does this one look better? I tried making the huts from planes that I distorted so it looked more like the huts were made from individual pieces.

It is hard for me to tell but if I have to choose I would say the one on the right. It may just be the texture because strictly speaking I can't tell a difference in the model itself.

oops - clarification.

The first picture is made using cylinders and the second one is the one I'm asking about.

Does the new way look better as Mike says? I'm thinking it does, but want opinions.

well it perhaps looks a bit more 'natural' if that's what you're going for, but adds a lot of complexity that you're probably going to eb barely able to see...

Also, as someone who designs buildings, the new doesn't bode too well for drafts, heating, etc...:D Mind you, neither does the lack of a door :o

I think a final verdict would have to wait until I see what other detail is going to be added to the houses...

More shrooms Kena - didn't you do a cool shroom pic a couple of months ago? Am I spotting a recurring theme?:D

I lover the leaf textures for the fairy house roof but I can't help thinking that fairies would live in something more rounded and organic looking than your structures. I would certainly be thinking in terms of lots of fiddly architectural details - sort of gothic-romantic (if there is such a thing :D).

Fun subject.

hmm I like the look you have kena..but to me the leaves on the roof are to rigid and straight. I would make them more rough looking more rounded at the bottom. Maybe even get some images of leaves to use a reference and make the roof of the huts look like that.

I think I share your point about the roofs, rjeff... I'm planning on working on that if I have time at the end of the contest.

I got my Idea for this kind of house from the web actually

OK... if you admit a problem, it's half the battle, yes?

I admit that I have a problem with mushrooms. They are so much fun to make and you can do so many variations on what I did for my first posts, that I have spent today just making them and tweeking them and UV mapping them, and , and, and....

So I guess that starting tomorrow, I'm going to have to get some more huts going. Maybe I will put them on stilts....

I think the buildings are too geometric for fairies. I would make their dwellings from the materials available ... like the leaf roof but less structured. Use twigs (structure or as logs), grass (thatched roof), pebbles, feathers, bark, etc.

Since fairies fly their homes wouldn't necessarily have the doors at the ground level. Flying would mean no bridges between mushrooms needed, no stairs or ladders, lighter construction symbolic of air and flight. Twig-logs and pebbles might be more for gnomes on the ground.

Wouldn't the mushrooms for their village be mostly in a fairy circle?

actually, the walls are bark, and they are tied together on a framework of twigs.

re-did the roof using new planes.

Quick update... the roof looked like it was plastered, so I stitched it together.

Thanks rjeff.

I was happily making more leaves for different roofs and it occurred to me that no one really knows how I did that. Not a good challenge WIP that way, ya know.

I toyed around with using alpha-mapped planes, then I said to myself that this is not a scene that I plan on exporting to other programs, so why not take advantage of the GOOD quirks of TS 7.6!

If you map a picture onto a plane and apply plainer UV, then you can actually cut out any shape you like, and as long as you do not re-apply the UV to those separated shapes, they keep the part of the picture that you cut out. You can then add edges to that new shape and move them around as long as you do not go past the current UV mapping to the "background".

Cool. I don't have to worry too much about number of edges and vertices, since I won't be going over any TS constraints and I can customize my look just the way I like. Copy the leaf shape as many times as necessary (3 for the first roof) and layer them. Then add edges and "bend" using point-edit and you have 1/8 of a roof. Put the eights together, and you have an 8 sided roof.

But a picture is worth a thousand words of explanation, so here you go.

Nice work. I like the texturing a lot - especially the ground. It almost seems to be glowing with a fairy magic :)

Thanks... It was just a matter of using existing texture for the ground. It was originally going to be a place-holder, but I like it so much I'm going to keep it. Once I get the rest of the roofs up, I gotta do a background... maybe trees.

OK... got all the roofs on and positioned the huts... expanded the general ground, now all I have to do is figure out if I want it in trees or rocks, see if I want to add leaves on the ground, try for some atmosphere maybe... all the little details.

I'm getting there. I decided that Fairies in the middle of trees is just overdone, so I decided to put them near a pile of rocks. And I've started working on the lighting a bit.
