Ok..do this ..

1) Model side..

create a new layer...

2) on the second layer add a sphere or any model (can be created on workspace too)

3) go to the workspace and try to add hair to the sphere..

You cant.. for some kind of reason the hairs not created..

The reason is the hairs are only created on the basic layer.. so if you has disabled you cant create hair.. but is not 100% truth.. so if you go again to the model side, you can see the hairs, but you cant render..

Can try again to go to the workspace and you can see there still no hair..

But try this workarround... Go again to the model side.. unhide the basic layer and hide again (if your realy need to get hide) ... and go again to the workspace you can see the hair and you can play whit it as usual...

But if you cut the hair to much to eliminated you cant create again untill you unhide again the basic layer..

So.. In concusion. you cant create hair from the biggining if you had the basic layer hiden.

Workarround.. create a little of hair on workspace go to the model side unhide and hide again..or just dont hide the basic layer...:D

I did exactly as you said in model side I added a layer then added sphere then go to workspace side. I had no problems with the hair on workspace side, it worked fine.

Maybe its your graphics card :D

But really I had no problems.

Did you try Heidi's scalp technique in the hair tutorial? It gives you much more control over where the hair 'grows'.

Plus, you get to look at my lovely face while reading it...:D

Um... Prodigy, try it again, with the hair density tool. In your video, you're trying to add hair with the hair lengthening tool. You need to use the density tool to add hair. You can then use the lengthening tool to alter it.

So long as the hair object was on the active layer when I go into workspace, I have no problems adding hair. Both with the basic layer active and not active.

This is just because hair is in layer 0, default, basic layer, and never created in any other. Modeler does not handle hair at all.
