I am working on a camera model and want to put a subtle displacement map on the body to simulate a leather surface. The displacemnt shows up in both modeller and workspace (see picture) but does not render with Vray, no matter what I try. (Have not tried reinstalling yet). The normal map is made in PS with a Nvidia plugin. I also made maps in Wilbur but with same negative results (I quit using Wilbur because maps made in Wilbur make TS crash when you put them in a folder with other textures like tga or jpgs!).

Is Dribble the answer or is it one of those secret buttons I have to push?

I imported the map in the Material Editor with both options (normal map and bitmap) and in WS with the file picker option but none of it works.

Hope someone can help me

You need to have some kind of light shining on the surface to reveal the normal map (spotlight, local light, infinite light, etc.). Something I thought about but haven't had the time to test is if an array of infinite lights with shadow casting turned off set to a very small value would solve this problem.

That could be it, Jack. I only have HDR lighting in there now. I will try it tonight, thanks!

Yes HDRI wont show up the bumps in V-Ray - mainly because the lighting in HDRI is kind of diffuse, from all directions, which evens out the effect of a bump map.

Just a slight directional light source included in the scene should help the bump show, without significantly changing the lighting. Let us know how you get on, we'd be interested in seeing the V-Ray render once the bumps are showing up!

Thanks!

If you want to render with HDRI or global illumination, you might want to try a true displacement map (instead of a regular bump or normal map). Then the geometry will be there for that kind of lighting to create the shadows. Of course you will then need to make sure that there is enough geometry to create the bumps you want.

Here is a render with an infinite light added to the scene. The bump shows up nicely. It is a bit overly bright and the DOF needs more tweaking because it also affects the front of the camera, but it is getting there. Thanks for all your input.

What I miss with the normal maps is the ability to adjust the bumpiness as you could do in Lightworks. You can make diferent normal maps but it is not so intuitive and quick.
