I've noticed that if you select an object, then click an object editing button (for example, object move, scale or rotate), then click and drag in the scene to edit the object, it selects objects in the background then edits them.

Here's an easy duplicatable example:

Open a new scene. Place a rectangular prism anywhere in the scene. Place a sphere over the rectangular prism and change the view so that it is almost a top-down view. Click the sphere. Click object move. Click and hold over the rectangular prism and drag the mouse. The rectangular prism should move, but that's not always what you want. If you have a plane as a ground in your scene with other objects that you want to move around this little thing gets frustrating...

Any easy fixes?

you are doing a click-and-drag? try click - release - then click the widget and move.

Sounds like Dynapick. You can turn that off in the desktop settings panel if I recall correctly.

Yes that's dynapick - the click both selects the object and begins editing, in one go. I always turn it off :) It's on by default, and is in the stack. When off a click and drag will do the edit without dynamically picking a new object, and a single click with no drag will act as a select new object.

I also change the selection method to Smallest BBox as I find that works best for me (a mouse click selects the object with the smallest bounding box beneath the mouse pointer, which is usually the one I want - lets me click on a coke can in a box on a table inside a room for example, as its the smallest one, but I can also select box, table, or room depending on just where I click). The selection method is a drop down list so you can adjust it to suit your situation and / or personal preference.

HTH!
