I'd also add to that list a monitor capable of displaying at 1280x1024 at a refresh rate you find comfortable. For example: if I try setting my CRT monitor to less than 85Hz I end up with a headache. It can handle 1024x768 [or less] at 85Hz, but any higher resolution & the refresh rate drops to either 75 or 60Hz, which would mean a headache for yours truly.

Another thing I'd mention - don't get a Packard Bell with an Intel 920 CPU. Was having a go on 1 in PC World the other day because I was interested in the monitor [mmm...Xerox XA7-19i...http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/smilies/drool.gif] it was hooked up to, but it was struggling to cope with me just dragging a .jpg from a search window to Windows Picture & Fax Viewer! At a rough estimate I'd say it performed at least twice as slow as my XP3200, maybe even slower than that! Not sure whether that's because it's an Intel or because of the brand... <shrug> Having said that, my stepdad bought a system [a Medion] with a dual-core 800 series Pentium [either 3 or 3.2Ghz, I forget], & that runs ok. Maybe the 920's some sort of cut-down version with less cache or something. [you can tell I'm really interested in Intel, can't you? :D]

Hi there,

Im new in this forum and have a litle experience with TS. I was searching for a topic on my situation but could not find a better place to place this.

I have a Sony Vaio Pentium 4, 3.8ghz with 2GB of Ram memory, 3 Sata Harddrives, at 10,000 rpm and a Nvidia 7600 256mb video ram. You could said that it is enough for TS, but when working on the excersices in the "Model" view, after trying different functions the software crash. Get a message saying that we are sorry but net to close the program. I'm having this problem since TS 6. This is normal, or there is a solution?

Thanks friends...:o

To me your hardware req. looks good. I bet your in point edit mode when you get that message (not the only place).

I can recreate that message in 10 seconds on the Modeler side. Select a primitive, right click with mouse, select rotate, rotate a segment and Bingo. TS doesn't like it when you point edit outside it's limits. (I'm still talking about the Modeler Side)

What I understand from your comments Steinie, is that this is an issue that everybody outthere is having the same problem. Maybe to handle this is saving more frequently before it crash... How about increasing the Video Card with more memory.

I now that there are now 512mb, 640mb and even 710mb for the Nvidia Cards. I remember when I upgraded to ts5 and then to ts6 and 6.6 that the problem was not fixed. That was a reason why I quit the 3D world. I was hoping that this new version brings better performance when using memory, but looks that it is still there.

Thanks for your comments!

It's not a problem with drivers. What Steinie is saying is that the old tools (Modeler) are buggy and crash often and no matter what your hardware they are gonna crash on you at some point.

The key is to use the new tools, Workspace, and only use Model side when you need a tool that's not available in Workspace. Also not to repeat things that cause it to crash -- or at least like you said, save first. ;)

Model side is the old tools and according to Caligari, there are no plans to develop it further, in fact it's only there until the tools (and import/export routines) can be moved over to the new architecture.

As far as hardware recommendations go, it depends on what you plan to use TS for. If you are going to be doing a lot of rendering with V-Ray, Virtualight, or Lightworks, then you want a fast CPU so that your renders are number crunched faster. Multi-core helps significantly when rendering with V-Ray and Lightworks. Any Intel Core2 Duo CPU should be fine -- and they overclock very well. Though I've had no problems running (and using) TS7.5 on an old 2.0 GHz single core Athlon as well -- renders were rather slow though...well compared to my 3.3 GHz C2D. ;)

For modeling and DX9 rendering you need a fast video card that supports DX shader model 2.0. That's a 7600 series nVidia or an x800 series ATI or better. Best choice right now is the 320MB 8800 nVidia card. 6600 nVidia and x700 ATI are ok, and will run TS fine, but are a bit behind the times. On board video cards such as any of the Intel onboard video cards and the nVidia 6150 are not adequate and will have problems running TS.

RAM -- get 2 Gig or more.

HD -- get at least 320GB

Monitor -- LCD. 1600x1050 (HDTV) resolution (or better) is what I would recommend. Don't get anything less than 1440x900. The TS7.5 read me recommends at least 1280x1024. Many users are also recommending dual monitor setups. I recommend at least 19 inches, anything else is going to feel cramped.

Edit: Forgot to mention -- Wacom tablet. Get one. It's invaluable for texturing, post-process, and concept work. I used to think any old tablet would work, or that I could get away with using a mouse. There just isn't any comparison.

-Jack.

I have upgraded my system recently - its fantastic - it wasnt expensive (1500 AUD + screen) and works well for the little time I have spent on TS7.5 so far, and also for realtime HDV video editing and such..

Intel Conroe 6600 (price dropped considerably just after I bought mine !)
Gigabyte 965P-DS3P Pro (upgradeable to quad core)
Gskill Memory (black/silver 4x4x4x12)
Seagate, 1 320G system drive and dual 320G raid 0 (600G) drive
V7 22" widescreen LCD (or chimea) 1650x1050 res
Antec Sonata Case and TAGAN 550W power supply
A couple of coolermaster 12" super quiet fans
Zalman CPU cooler (9500)
ATI X1950 512M Video card (Palit)

If you are in Sydney I can recommend a great shop with good prices..

It was easy to put together and is super quiet and super fast...

Jack, you right, while I was working in the "Workspace" everything works just fine. I will follow your advise and if I need to go to the "Model" area, I will be saving frequently. On the monitor specs, I think that Im not to bad. I'm using two Samsung LCD 22" with 1600 x 1050 as you mention. I also have a Wacom Tablet that works fine to.

I really apreciate you recomendations to you an all others. Keep on..

Thanks...:)

I run it on two machines.. At work: x2 4600+, ATI x800GT 256mb, 2GB DDR400, 24" dell 2405FPW. At home x2 3800+, ATI x1900xt 512mb, 2GB DDR400, 24" dell 2405FPW.

At work it runs markedly slower in workspace but better in model than home. I assume Model requires lots of CPU? Workspace requires a lot more GPU it seems as the x1900xt is a lot faster than the x800gt and you feel that quite a bit. DX9 also looks a lot better on the x1900xt.

At home it looks and feels great in Workspace but Model is quite terrible on performance. I noticed a great deal of bogginess and general UI lag overall. Though I have a wee bit less processor here.

In that light, and being you need to use both Model and Workspace (for now), having a great CPU and GPU are both equally important. Honestly it runs 'adequately' on this hardware which is well beyond the minimum specs. I wouldn't run it on anything less at all, and actually a lot more CPU is desired for me.

I'm just waiting on the Q3 quad core price cuts..

One thing I purchased recently is a wireless mouse with an ENLARGE button. Every one with a computer screen should have one Especially artists!
