Where I live we have a river opposite our house with a perfect cycling track alongside it and on a good day there is nothing I like better than a good ride. I tend to a fairly sedate pace these days and the full suspension protects my arms from major jarring so it's all good!
Yeah, suspension's cool. It's the 1st bike I've had with it though, so I've got to remember not to use the front brakes at all unless I really need to. With the brakes on my old bike I had to use both & hope I didn't hit anything. :D

Thanks for the link to the GPU comparisons - I've been googling and found some good info as well. I've added your link to my Favs for future reference.
Hehe, we'll make a hardware geek out of you yet. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/smilies/online2long.gif

Christopher Reeve was the only Superman I liked - Lois and Clark just felt like a soapie and didn't really impress and I never watched Smallville for similar reasons - a bit judgemental on my part as I never saw the show and just assumed I wouldn't like it. :o
I know this'll be considered heresy in some circles, but I never liked Christopher Reeve. Thought he was a bit odd/weird.

LOL :D Maybe we should rename it: Is the Features forum really... the title of this thread?;)

Thanks. :) Yeah, I do tend more towards understatements than exaggerations. Would it surprise you to learn that I actually exercise a fair bit of restraint when it comes to my off-topic wanderings? [compared to how much I would if I didn't, I mean :)]

I suppose that has something to do with not wanting to buy a new keyboard every month down to the fact that you keep wearing them out by all those essay long posts. (Not that I don't enjoy reading them)

LMAO. :D No, it's just pretty much what I said in that previous post about worrying about going too far off topic.

Speaking of keyboards, I'm trying hard to resist getting 1 of these (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/GB/EN,CRID=2158,CONTENTID=10776). Partly because I really want a couple of new monitors, & aside from all the other reasons for getting them they should save me a few quid on my electric bill [my 20" guzzles 150W, can't find info on my 17" - the LCDs I want would be only 48W each], which might mean I'd be in a better position to afford 1 of these (http://www.artlebedev.com/portfolio/optimus/), which the site is now saying is due at the end of this year.

Um... now I've got all embarrassed and don't know what to say.....:o

Actually this whole conversation has got me a degree of notoriety at my house. My partner asks "What's all that typing about" and then says, "Wait, I know, you're talking to the Aliens again!" I think she thinks I think I'm communicating with Saturn or Alpha Centauri or somewhere.

Hmm, they are both nice keyboards, and unfortunately they are both out of my reach at the moment, being a student means you don't go and blow hundreds of pounds on something the you can get for around 50p. That's an exaggeration of course, but I think you get my point. I am however on the lookout for a cheap and chearful ergonomic keyboard, I just haven't found one yet. TFT's are the next move and I am considering getting one sometime soon, just a little 15" to free up some of my deskspace. I plan to get dual-monitors at some point, but having two CRT's on an already small desk is a bit stupid.

True. Thing is though that with me cheap keyboards don't tend to last long. :(

Not... 1 of those split/curved, "natural" keyboards? I can't stand those things [just personal dislike, I know other people think they're the "best thing since sliced bread"], but if that's what you want I'll do my best to help you find a good deal.

TFT's are the next move and I am considering getting one sometime soon, just a little 15" to free up some of my deskspace.
I wouldn't bother with a 15" IIWY, I recommend 17" minimum. I know you're on a tight budget, but they can be had for less than you'd expect. [yes, I'll help with looking for those too :)]

I plan to get dual-monitors at some point, but having two CRT's on an already small desk is a bit stupid.
You think that's bad... picture this:
My bed's in the corner of the room, I have a bookcase [typical 3 shelf, bought-from-Argos jobby] against the same wall the head of my bed's against, & on the end of the bookcase furthest from that, facing my bed, sits my 17". About 2.5-3 feet back, and just to the left [so that head-on they look next to each other], sitting on-top of an utter piece of http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/smilies/swear.gif "media storage cupboard" [I ask you, honestly, who makes 1 these days that isn't big enough to put DVDs in!!!], is my 20".

I intend to replace both with 19" LCDs. I was going to get a couple of cheaper Neovo 1s, 'cos the place that did them does a £20 dead pixel check - they check to make sure it has no dead pixels & if it develops any within 48 hours of you receiving it they'll replace it. Thing is, there's these gorgeous Xerox (http://www.xerox-displays.info/product_display_xa7.html) 1s I've seen. Aside from looking good [saw 1 in PC World the other day http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/smilies/drool.gif], apparently Xerox themselves guarantee it dead-pixel-free for 7 days without any extra charge. Having said that, they are dearer than the Neovo 1s, but the place that was doing the Neovo 1s didn't have any in stock last I checked. :(

Our set-up here is a bit better - we have a little 'office' off our main living room (the living room is pretty large and this end of it has a piano, my MIDI keyboard, a small PA system and a selection of guitars - my partner and I both play). In the 'office' is two reasonable size desks and a collection of bookshelves. We have 3 pooters - all with CRT monitors and it's all quite comfy and well set out.

Between the two desks is a the main power board with a series of multi-boxes coming from the surge protector and a mass of power cables for the pootas, printer fax/phone, desk lights and so on. It's a great little setup really and looks quite professional IMHO.

We've just been given 2 more CRT monitors which I'm collecting on thursday - not sure what size they are.

Not... 1 of those split/curved, "natural" keyboards? I can't stand those things Is that because of the extra long finger? The one that glows at the end and makes the plants grow? ;) Actually I'm with you (and I have a normal set of human fingers) I don't like those ergo keyboards - they don't suit my typing style.

There is that. That's why they cost so little. :D - they're designed for people like us (students).

No, no, definately not! Far too expensive (not the only reason though - they are just 'wierd')

Hmm 17" might be a bit far off at the moment. I have a 15" CRT and i'm fine with that size currently. However I know from experience that bigger is generally better.

Oh, and when i say sometime soon, I mean sometime in the next year (possibly) - nothing is ever certain, so why try and fool yourself

Chuckle - the thread that wouldn't die.... (cue spooky music).

You're traveling through another dimension - a dimension far removed from the original subject, a journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's the signpost up ahead: Your next stop, The http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/smilies/offtopic.gif Zone. :D

We've just been given 2 more CRT monitors which I'm collecting on thursday - not sure what size they are.

If you end up with any spare [after you've picked the best to keep] you could sell them to increase the upgrade fund. :)

Actually I'm with you (and I have a normal set of human fingers) I don't like those ergo keyboards - they don't suit my typing style.

Yeah, I have a friend who thinks they're great, & I've tried a previous 1 of his [not his current 1], & also someone else's - just didn't feel right.

No, no, definately not! Far too expensive (not the only reason though - they are just 'wierd')

Not that I'd want 1 [obviously], but I just checked, & you can get them for even less than I thought. Infact you could get a pack of 5 for less than that Logitech 1 I was considering.

Hmm 17" might be a bit far off at the moment. I have a 15" CRT and i'm fine with that size currently. However I know from experience that bigger is generally better.

Something to think about: the only 15" LCDs I've seen [& there's not a lot around anymore] tend to have a resolution of 1024x768, if you've got tS7, or plan on getting it, you're really going to want to have a monitor that can do 1280x1024, which means 17" minimum. Not sure where you've been looking at prices, but you could get a 17" for around £130.

Oh, and when i say sometime soon, I mean sometime in the next year (possibly) - nothing is ever certain, so why try and fool yourself

Hehe, that's true - still, the offer of help is there if you need it.

Wow  that is a bit crowded.

LOL - you have no idea! The main room [serves as bedroom & living room] of my flat is roughly 5m by 3.6m, & there's about enough floor space to walk from my bed to the kitchen, & from my bed to the hallway. :o

However a 20" CRT does take up a lot of space.

It's also 1 heavy SOB.

Yeah that xerox does look quite nice! Aah well, one can dream can't they.

Yeah, it's a shame that Aria (http://www.aria.co.uk/) [the place that offers the dead pixel checking service] ran out of the 19" Neovos (http://www.neovouk.com/products/F-419_r12.htm), as even with the extra £20 for the DPCS they were still about £50 cheaper than the Xerox XA7-19i.

I hope i'm not being too hypocritical, now starting off my own page long posts . :jumpy: (admittedly most of that is taken up with your quotes though :p )

Blimey lads, not only are your posts way off topic-they are killing my index finger to scroll down the page-they are getting sooooooo long..;)
:D If you're using IE you should be able to click your mouse wheel, & you should see your cursor replaced by a circle with 2 [or 4 if the page is wide enough to warrant the horizontal scroll bar being active] arrows in it, at which point you can scroll just by moving the mouse a little in the direction you want to go & it'll keep scrolling at that speed until you move it further in the same direction [scrolls faster], the opposite direction [scrolls slower, stops, or scrolls in the opposite direction - depending on how far you move the mouse], etc.

The same feature exists in Maxthon (http://www.maxthon.com/) [as it's based on the IE core], but Maxthon also has its own auto-scroll option available on a per-tab basis.

<edit>
I forgot to mention, to get back out of that scrolling mode, either roll the mouse wheel or click 1 of the buttons.
</edit>

As for Firefox, ummm...http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/smilies/unsure.gif I guess you could use 1 of the mouse gesture extensions & bind a gesture to Page Down.

Wouldn't want you getting OTRSI, would we? ;)

Did you get the icons you required Alien?

That's quite surprising, I would have expected them to be significantly more than that.

Yes 17"'s have gone down a lot recentley. I do not have tS7 as of yet but hope to do some time in the future, at least after tS7.5 has come out.

Hehe, that's true - still, the offer of help is there if you need it.

LOL - you have no idea! The main room [serves as bedroom & living room] of my flat is roughly 5m by 3.6m, & there's about enough floor space to walk from my bed to the kitchen, & from my bed to the hallway. :o

Aaah, you could do with an inflatable bed, would increase floor space when your not sleeping (that wouldn't work for me as sleeping takes up a large majority of the day)

It's also 1 heavy SOB.

Thats why I refrained from asking my brother to get me a seriously cheap 20" from the nearest computer recycling centre as he would have had to walk it all the way back to his house. (Centre is not very acessible by car)

Oh don't get me wrong, you can get them for more than that, I'm just saying that there are cheapy ones about. IIRC my friend got a wireless MS natural + wireless mouse set for somewhere between £20 & £30.

Yes 17"'s have gone down a lot recentley.

Yeah, they seem to have pretty much become the new standard size.

Aaah, you could do with an inflatable bed, would increase floor space when your not sleeping (that wouldn't work for me as sleeping takes up a large majority of the day)

"Floor space"? What are these strange words you speak? :D Seriously though, I do intend to free up some floor space eventually [but only so it'll give me more room for more stuff :D]. Although it's just a normal bed, it also doubles [in use] as a chair for me for when I'm watching TV or on the computer, so the inflatable wouldn't be a practical option for me. Then again, I'm not 1 of those people that craves lots of space anyway [unless it's to put more stuff in!].

Thats why I refrained from asking my brother to get me a seriously cheap 20" from the nearest computer recycling centre as he would have had to walk it all the way back to his house. (Centre is not very acessible by car)

That's why I'm looking forward to the 19" LCDs, smaller physical size, but slightly bigger viewable screensize than my 20" [only 18" viewable].

Yeah, they are pretty cheap for the large majority of things, however it is best if you get them when they're on special offer. If I were on the look-out for something like RAM, first I would check Aria to see if there were any great deals, and then if they weren't I would have a look at ebuyer.

Oh yeah, forgot them. I've bought a few things from them in the past. I'm glad you posted that message actually, as it prompted me to look in the folder I have in my Favourites for places to get PC hardware from, & I saw Tekheads (http://www.tekheads.co.uk/). I decided to have a quick look to see what they had, as I hadn't looked at their site in a while, & guess what I saw (http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=605268) on the front page [they randomly rotate stuff to tempt you with :)] - yup, newer version of the Xerox monitor [at least I think it's newer, same spec, but has extra features where the stand's concerned]. Of course, it doesn't hurt that it's cheaper than the 1 in PCW [£250] either. :D

Hi - I've been away for a couple of days doing wizardy things - just popped into the forums to see wassup!

Hey, W!ZARD, did you know Firetrust are based in your neck of the woods? No sir I did not know that - well at least not consciously, though now I've looked up what your talking about I do recall hearing something about this some time ago.

New Zealand does alright for itself technologically speaking - just on the other side of town we have Trimballs - a company that's apparently a world leader in GPS tech, plus Taits who do hi-tech radio gear on a global scale - on a more 3d software note one of the Terragen developers lives about 20 minutes drive from here too - then of course there's the geniuses (genii?) at WETA in wellington...

Loved your 'Twilight zone' riff - a good LOL - is the off topic smiley one of your own (I'm asking because I stole it to add to my collection and want to be able to credit the owner).

Yeah, well, what can I say - what I lack in social graces I try to make up for with humour. ;)

Me? no, I found it when I was googling for the drool smilie, IIRC. 1 of the search results took me to some other forum's smilie page... & they just followed me home, 'onest guv'nor. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/smilies/shifty.gif
