it's been great watching the membership of the forum slowly rise over the months..:banana:
..but seeing many attempts to create member names like the one today "compare-viagra (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/member.php?u=554)" is annoying to say the least, knowing it's some nut case like that person spamming our emails etc..:mad: :mad: :mad: ..get a life |

I had thought there was a process in place that you had to own TrueSpace first. Also you had to wait for approval to get your ID and PW. Everyone else was a "Guest". No? |

I would think that's the way it works Steinie..it doesn't seem to stop them from trying though..

I have investigated this in the past and then again today. There is a way to just remove the "Welcome" to newest member area of the page. No way to change so just last approved member is showing there (which would be best).
I keep up with them. Untill I approve a registration, user can't post or such. I get email for all registrations so check every day for this sort of thing. I remove them and the member's list should reflect this. If anyone sees a member that has such a username, send me a private message or email and I can check it out.
You must be a Caligari customer to be allowed registered status here in forums. It sort of seems to keep the noise level down and hopefully majority of registered forum users prefer it this way. |

To give you an idea on 5/5/06 TS had 77 Active members, now they have 124. Now I'm sure that some came over from the other forum (shut down) but it is growing and that is great news. Of course the number of "Users" is a lot larger then "Active Users" and there are Users who do not use forums at all.
I bet when 7.5 comes out it will explode.
I wish some of the quiet users would join in and share their thoughts or works. ;) |

FWIW I certainly prefer it this way and thouroughly appreciate the efforts made by Norm and the rest of the Caligarians. These forums are the best on the net for me - no spam, mostly friendly and supportive people - it's a pleasure to be part of this!! |

One item I love of these forums is NO POP-UPS and endless advertising like some forums combined with music and sound effects :(. So in my books Caligari has the best forums on the planet for subject matter, bar none. |

Any forum can be like that, with the right software [all freeware].
So in my books Caligari has the best forums on the planet for subject matter, bar none.

Boy, I sure *Hope* Caligari has more than 124 owners of ts7! Now THAT would be a major problem! :D

Hm, I was one of those tS users that for years just browsed the forum as a guest...mostly because I used tS very rarely and therefore didn't have much to contribute. :o
It was when I started to follow MadMouse WH-Mech thread that I finally understood that the forum might be the "whip" I needed for my projects and now I use tS at least a couple of hours every day :D
Ok..sensitive people might be worried that their work will be trashed, but I can't say that I see any negative or nasty comments on this forum, so they should give it a try ! Constructive critisism is really good for artistic development, just don't take it personal ;)
BTW: I think that the Caligari forum way to allow unregistered users read-access is the best. I hate forums that require registration for looking, it just scares people away! |

If you think the little bit of spam we've seen is bad, log onto youtube sometime, you can't make it through three mesages without seeing an advertisement, I'd say we're quite lucky to have a forum as good as this. |

Eh, I've actually never seen any spam in this forum, I guess the moderators are faster than me ;)
Wonder if I could get Norm to monitor my email...there are still some spam that the filter fails to detect :D |

Well, it's kinda hard for a spammer to post here, as all forum registrations have to be approved by Norm before they can post. For starters they have to be registered Caligari customers, & also spammers aren't exactly that intelligent.

If you only use 1 account you could try the free version of MailWasher [to use it with more than 1 account requires the paid-for MailWasher Pro]. It's very rare any spam gets past my filters. :) |

It was when I started to follow MadMouse WH-Mech thread that I finally understood that the forum might be the "whip" I needed for my projects and now I use tS at least a couple of hours every day If it was my thread that brought an artist of your quality to the forum then all my work was worth while :banana:
As for the forum.... I used to only ever frequent Renderosity but the community over there started to dwindle so now I very rarely go. But this forum is both easy to use, very friendly and I rather like the fact that you have to be a TS owner to join up. On too many other forums I get the impression that we TS user are treated like the black sheep of the family and that make my blood boil :mad:
Basically what I'm trying to say is (in the words of Billy Joel) 'DON'T GO CHANGING, I LOVE YOU JUST THE WAY YOU ARE' :D |

:) This makes me smile - the other forum I use has more than 29,000 members (not all active of course!) and more than 100,000 threads - and whilst there's not much actual spam, there's plenty of pointless posts and trolls.
I agree that this is seems a very well behaved, pleasant place to be - probably due to the small community. Hope it manages to remain that way.
I must admit, I don't remember being asked if I was a TS customer when I signed up (and it was only last week!) but my memory is getting poor! And I am, anyway... |

I've always been impressed with this forum for the great support and constructive criticism everyone gives. I'm not worried about being criticized too harshly. Besides I can always create 3d objects of people's avatars and throw virtual darts at them! :D

Today we have 174 Active Members and 677 members. But thats a lot of you reading but not posting! Join the fun people. Try out the 2 hour modeling contest. Show us some of your projects. Ask questions or help someone else but above all have fun! |

That's actually a pretty good lurker to poster ratio - many of the other forums I've been a member of have less than 10% of the members actively posting which says a lot of good things about the calibre of this community. Having said that though I also agree whole heartedly with the point you are making! It's good to hear from new folks. |

I was a lurker for about 3 months before I actually posted something. With an "activity" forum like this where your work can be posted it takes a lot of us a bit to get up to speed. |

Belive it or not it when you see that a person has registered with a username like 'Viagra for sale' there's probably a 99.9% chance that the registration was made by a forum bot.
Current versions of PHPBB, SMF and even fully paid for forums get attacked by spam bots which register and post links to sites that sell pills, pron and all sorts. :)
One forum I frequent (leadwerks.com) was brought to closure for about 3 weeks because of spambots. The owner of leadwerks (Josh Klint) was using PHPBB as the main forum. Man I teel yah, it got spambotted to death. It all happened when he started using google adwords to advertise 3D World Studio. Once that happened the forum became a target for spam bots. There were a 100 new registrations a day each with usernames like 'viagra for sale', 'viagra4u' etc.
It's something that no forum is capable of blocking if not not updates and patched and has a good registration system.
By the way. I've been lurking on these forums for ages. Years in fact. I definately believe that there are a hell of a lot of TS users than the forum would suggest.

Amon, the one mistake I made was answering "yes" to "Do you want to show your email?" when submitting to the gallery contest. I've been bombarded with Viagra ads ever since

@Kena - For me it was posting to this forum (actually the old forums) that got me 'up to speed'. On each occasion that I have won something somewhere it's because of the specific support, encouragement and constructive feedback from the folk on this forum. I've won a few contests and challenges at various places on the net but never without some input from the good folk here at the Caligari Forums.
And for what it's worth I still don't consider myself fully 'up to speed'! It's good to see you taking an active part in the community though.
Amon, You have agood point about all the automated nasties out there, spambots and so on. One of the very great pleasures of coming to THIS forum is that members must be Caligari Customers and are vetted by Norm and/or someone else on the team rather than by an automated process. I've never received anything in my inbox that I didn't want as a result of posting to this forum (unlike others I could name). |
