Hi guys
I contacted technical support earlier this evening about True space not working on Windows Vista.

This was the reply:
Greetings Mark: thank you for contacting us.
If you check the trueSpace7 specifications, Vista is not listed there as an operating system at this time.
Cordially

I hardly find this very reassuring, there is no information about when True Space will be available to use on Vista neither is there a reason why it is not available now.

I think Caligari should sort there tech support out as I am sure there are more people out there who are/will be in the same situation as I am.

:mad::mad:

At the point of writing this, Maya, 3DS Max, Softimage XSI, Cinema 4d and Lightwave does not list Vista as a supported operating system either (granted I have not contacted any by phone, just quickly looked up the system specs on the web). Pretty much all of them only list Windows XP, with some exceptions related to older versions that they say are supported on Windows 2000. Seeing how Microsoft is trying to shove Vista down our throats (I'm not planning on getting it. As far as I'm concerned, for me Windows XP may very well be the end of the line as far as Microsoft OSes are concerned), I'm sure all of these, as well as Caligari, will eventually support Vista officially.

You wrote them and they answered you. If TS isn't supported on the Vista release, it's not a problem yet to many of the TS users due to it being so new. Caligari is still working on version 7.xx at this time..... Is Vista 'bug free'? People are waiting on fixes for TS and developers guides etc, Caligari is probably waiting on MS for 'tools and or documentation'...

Note that it's not currently supported. Of course it's not quite released yet, Jan 30th is given as the release. Will Vista be supported - well of course it will. But as of this precise moment, Vista is not listed on tS7 as one of the operating systems it runs on, and with reason.

Should you choose to buy an use an OS that is not listed as compatible, then it is "Your mileage may vary" and "buyer beware". Naturally we will be looking into getting Vista on there, and letting everyone know when it is a supported OS for running tS7.

A new OS is a time of transition, and transition takes time. There will be a lot of issues with Vista and hardware and software, and it will take some time for all that to get ironed out, but it will get there! Those who jump into getting the OS on day one will be the ones who suffer most from those incompatibilities, bugs, the fact that their system is unique from everyone else and that combo of memory and HD size and RAID set up and graphics card just happens to cause this weird error, etc, a hazard of being an early adopter.

Naturally, all that said, we will continue to be working with Vista in mind, and will post news about things as soon as we have it. For now, the reply from tech support is correct, it's not an OS we currently support for tS7.

HTH!

Microsoft vista its a new plataform.. you gonna need new drivers.. new graphicc card if your its not a GF 6200 or better... I think its a big BIG Jump.. many softwares like corel, doesn't work over vista.. a large list of games too..

My recomendation?? wait a few years to change to the vista os.

Well but if you say you have a GForce 8800GTX with DX10.. and you want to play MS Flight Simulator X with the new DX10.. Its a good point!!! :D

But Caligari is not the problem here... Microsoft it is... it Change everithing and the softwares companys must run behind what microsoft do..

Best Regards, and mantain the calm.. DirectX10 some day gonna be for the mases... i hope

Actually, being somewhat of a flight simulation fanatic myself, you might find it interesting to know that even Microsoft had difficulty knowing what needed to be done to patch Flight Sim X for Vista. At the time Flight Sim X came out, DirectX 10 was still in a state of flux so Vista wasn't fully taken advantage of in the release version.

Here's an interesting quote from a GameSpot interview with the Microsoft Flight Sim X team prior to the first release.

GS: There's some confusion out there about how Flight Simulator X is tied into Windows Vista and DirectX 10. Could you clear up the situation? Also, what sort of system requirements are we looking at to run the game?

MG: Flight Simulator X will really shine with the release of Windows Vista and DirectX 10, providing simulation fans with an even more realistic and genuine experience. We are currently working hard to provide a free, downloadable Windows Vista update for fans as close to the launch as possible to ensure they have the opportunity to game with the most advanced technology on the market, if they so choose. Nonetheless, Flight Simulator X is compatible with current Windows technology and will still offer a fantastic experience for customers from now until Vista is available.

The full article starts here:

I find it interesting that even Microsoft's own verbage included words to the effect of "Flight Simulator X is compatible with current Windows technology" and "We are currently working hard to provide a free, downloadable Windows Vista update for fans as close to the launch as possible". No actual date was given though.

Some flight sim enthusiasts are still cautious about immediately taking the leap for fear that their shiny new Microsoft-made flight simulator won't work properly on Vista.

So you see, it happens to Microsoft's own products too.

One of the problems is trying to test tS on an operating system that was, until a few weeks ago, in testing itself. Until Vista was finalised for OEM release in December it wouldn't have been possible to say if a problem seen was due to tS or Vista.

For info, I have run tS7.11 on 32-bit Vista with no problems at all. It works on my system but I haven't bothered with 64-bit Vista yet as there are too few drivers for the all hardware I use to even consider running it.

Tom does have a good point though. You are running tS on an Operating System that Caligari does not list as being supported, so if you have problems then the assistance Caligari can offer will be limited. I'm sure Caligari will be looking closely at Vista and making sure that it will be supported as soon as practical.

So I guess the bottom line is like many mods and tweaks, it is not recommended at this time. But it is up to the user to make that decision. It cannot be supported at the moment.

Personally, I am going to give it a go when my copy arrives. Eventually we should be able to identify certain configs, chipsets etc that cause the most problems.

Never ever, update to a new, just released OS on a mission critical PC!!

Software that was written for the earlier OS cannot be expected to work 100% of the time on the new one, there will always be the need for patches and tweaks.

Vista was nowhere in sight when TS7 was being developed so there was no way anyone could know what the application requirments for Vista were going to be.

Even if the PC was new with Vista pre-installed then the above argument still holds true.

Early adopters of the latest flavour of Winders or any new OS will always come across this problem.

Personaly I will not be upgrading to Vista until I absolutly have to and even then I will keep THIS PC running XP.

I know it seems unfair, but it really comes down to the personal choices made by the user.

Keep yer chin up, I daresay a Vista patch will be in the works. :)

Cheers

When you say that Vista will be supported does this inclde "64" bit edition eventually??

For now, the reply from tech support is correct
I still think more information could have been provided maybe:o

I sure hope so!!;)

Anyway I am sorry for the somewhat angry approach to this thread but as I am sure you can understand when something doesn't work when you really want it to it can be very annoying:o

By the way talking about vista?!?!?!!

Hoo have serious problems at my point of view.. Plus the others explain of the new drivers, new graphic card, etc. .

The new Windows Vista doesnt support DirectX 8 and DirectX9...

How Microsoft doesn't support Directx9??? or 8???

Yes.. Vista doesnt support natively the present games or i must say oldest games with DirextX9; and DX10 is not compatible with older versions.. Thats why they gonna call diferent.. (i dont remember now the new name) ;)

What do microsoft??? make a EMULATOR for the DX8 and 9 to those "im include" who doest have dx10 card to "play" older games...

Many people said "EMULATOR is not the same".. and its true.. try to run a emulator of Nintendo 64??? its not the same like run a game over a nintendo 64.. That consume lot of resources and memory..

Well thats other bad new from vista..

And sending this "bad new" to truespace, i dont know what kind of impact can have over the player side once Truespace support Vista..

Maybe the decrese of performance whas not significated.. but can be a problem for the developers of the player or Workspace (thats the rumor but i didn't see any screenshot yet.. :D )

Thats another reason to stay for a wile on xp...

HO! btw, Flight simulator X have few trubles with the dx10.. i read on a forum.. but i cant confirm nothing...:D

I'm running all my old DX9 games just fine in Vista. Vista DOES have DX9 (is a special stub version, DX9L.

Also, if you have XP and DX9 installed, and a DX9 card, then DX8 and earlier are being "emulated" as well.

Far as i know DX9 support older versions.. Dx10 doesn't.. they run a Emulator of DX9 to support them..

Good to hear you the games are running fine..

The diferences between dx8 and dx9 are the effects..

Directx9 call some shaders and new effects to the gpu.. if the gpu doesnt have those effects?? doesnt show.. like shadows or reflections..

I think the DX10 is a new architecture and doesnt have any similar things with older versions..

Even you are running allways the Dx9 emulator.. or you must buy a new 8800gtx card with dx10.. Then you gonna play with the dx10..
