A few years ago, my Da recorded a movie on telly. It was about a family on a road trip (in America I assume). There was a mother and father, two kids, a boy and girl, and another boy, one of the kids friends.

They are driving through a desert road and stop at a dinner in the middle of nowhere. They are told of an old mining town not too far away and so decide to go see it. This place is totally run down and no one lives here.

While exploring, they find a camcorder and upon playing it, they find movie footage of another family who are in the town and are being terrorised by some unknown phantoms there. They family are shaken by the footage and debate if it is real or not. They then discover that their vehical has disappeared from the street and they are stranded.

They stay the night but weird stuff happens (can't recall what).

The next day, the father and the boy (the friend), decide to track across the desert to get help, leaving the mother and two children in the town. While tracking, they discover a large ring of glass in the middle of nowhere. Upon investigating it, they find a plaque there which says that an atomic bomb was tested here in the 1950's or there abouts. They head on their way.

The mother and children, in the town, go looking for food and the mother falls through some old planks into a mine. While trapped down there, the camera is used to looked through the eyes of some "thing" living down there which closes in on her. you never see the Thing, just through its eyes. Anyway, the kids save the Ma before the Thing can get her.

Back on their tracking, the kid goes over a small sand dune and when the father crosses it, the boy is gone. There is nowhere that the boy could have gone to and he's nowhere to be seen. The father is forced to move on.

Eventually the father comes to a canyon and sees loads of cards down in it, and his family car is there. He goes down and gets it while something hunts him (again, through the eyes of the Thing via the camera, you never see the Thing). He gets the car going and flees. He goes back to the town to collect his family. When they try to escape, an old ruined bus is pushed out to block their path and all hell breaks lose but they escape and go to a town.

In town, while the father is reporting the missing boy and what happened to them, to the sherrif, the mother and the kids order food from a fast food take out. Then son realises that teh woman is the woman from the video they saw earlier, she is from the first family terrorised in the town.

The sherrif takes the family to a hotel for the night but during the night, the Thing appraoches the hotel (camera point of view). The girls wakes up but sees nothing and she tells her folks she wants to leave. So they do.

While leaving the town, the sherrif pulls them over, he has found the lost boy. They collect him but he's not the same, he's very quiet and subdued. As the family drive away from the town, into the night dessert, the Thing runs at the car, it crashes...

The movie ends with the family now residents of the town, working at the cafeteria. A crow watches them. An old man sitting outside looks towards the desert and a horror cloud like thing is roaming the desert.

...

Does anyone recognise this movie? Can anyone please put a name to it for me!?!

Never seen it but the first part sounds like a complete rip-off of 'The Hills have Eyes' (new version) right down to the cars in the canyon etc.

other bits sound like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake....sorry, I can't help.

Yes splinter, I think you are rightwith 'The Hills have Eyes' , Wes Craven was the stage director. The movie was produced about 1977.

There was a remake with the same title produced, which came into the movies 2006. In 2007 a second part was done continuing that story, at least it was a try.

A short historical background reflecting to England can be found at

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077681/

on the bottom of that web site

EDIT: just saw it's on wiki, knowing more than I did know: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hills_Have_Eyes_(1977_film)

Hehe... If I had a euro for every person who has directed me to "The Hills Have Eyes"...

Thanks, you're not the first person to point me in that direction and so many folks have, that I have looked at that movie online, both the original and the remake, but it's not that film. While I haven't seen that film(s), I do know they are about canabalism and in the movie I'm looking for, you don't ever see the Thing that's in the mines and desert. But from what I've learned of The Hills Have Eyes, the two movies seem very simular.

Thanks, anyway, appreciate the pointers.

So does this movie ring a bell for anyone else?

Good news Paul, well sort of anyway...

I've seen the movie you described years ago and it was exactly as you described. Unfortunately though, I have no idea what the name of it was and I can't seem to recall at the moment any actor names either.

It was a creepy and rather intense movie, in an "edge-of-your-seat" kind of way, great suspense and a real mind-boggler to figure out as it was developing.

If I knew any of the Actor's names I could probably find a page about it somewhere online, so I'll ask my wife when I see her in a few hours, maybe she will remember, but there's only a very slim chance she will.

Great movie though, and you're right, it came along well before "the hills have eyes." I'm fairly certain it was filmed here in Arizona as well.

3DVD, of all my searches online, you're the first person to confirm to have seen this movie too (I knew it wasn't all in my imagination! LOL!). Don't suppose your wife can point me in the right direction? Yes, even an actor from the movie would help so that way I could look them up, see all the movies they were in and hopefully find the film that way.

I forgot to tell my Da I wanted to keep that film and it got recorded over. I never knew the name of it and have been looking for it ever since. It was, as you said, a creepy movie and I'd love to see it again.

Sorry Paul... my wife remembers the movie alright but doesn't recall either the name of it or any of the actor names. Definitely no cannibals in that movie either!

I did invest about an hour last night using your original post here for numerous related keywords in a Google search effort to locate it but with no luck so far...

Can you recall any TV or Movie roles aside from that movie which any of it's actors played in as well?

Aw, man, you didn't have to do that. I'm not expecting anyone to go hunting on my behalf, just if you know it, great!! But thanks, appreciate it.

I'm afraid I don't know any of the actors in it, believe me I've been racking my brain these past few years trying to recall one of them. I wouldn't have a hope with the kids, but I "THINK" the actor who played the father I've seen in other movies... But can't be sure, it's been so long.

I've posted this message on numerous message boards around the net so I'm hoping someone will see it and recognise the movie and be able to give me a name or some direction to finding it.

Thanks again.

FOUND IT!!!

A member for a horror movie forum found it for me.

http://www.horror.com/forum/showthread.php?p=617390#post617390

It's seems to be only Region 1 DVD and I'm Region 2 but I have a USA DVD player I bought a few years back so it's not a problem. I've ordered a copy. Looking forward to it getting here.

Excellent!

Not a bad price on Amazon either, now I can let my brain settle on this one!

I think I may just grab a copy myself too, it really is a good and tense mystery as I recall. I remember something about the style of the ending I really liked too, made you think a lot after seeing it.

Glad someone posted related info and picture links too, helps put it all back together for my weary old synapses!

Now that you've found it again they'll have to rename it "Reappearance". Either way, give it a little longer and no doubt someone will make a 2nd rate remake of it.

Susan Dey? She was the only reason to watch The Partridge Family" as I recall....
