Hi Folks.

Well, I've been using TrueSpace for over ten years now and I've had a lot of fun, but I've decided it's time to move on. Being a part of the community, I didn't want to just disappear, hence, this will be my last post to the forums.

I got TrueSpace 1 off a magazine cover disc back in the early 1990's. I remember, it took me five minutes to do it, but I eventually had a red cube on screen and do recall saying to myself, "WOW! Look! A red cube!!!" LOL!! I've certainly come a long way since then. Shooting Stars, Dragon Quest, The (freaky) Wailing Child...

My only disappointment with TrueSpace is that, after a decade of use, I'm still churning out block art. I thought that by now I'd be producing character models on par with the astounding work Paul (Splinters) does. And it's not from lack of trying. I've spent many hours trying to produce such work but my efforts always produced poor results. I don't place the blame for this on TrueSpace, it's obviously a fault of my own, something just hasn't clicked with me.

Anyway, recent developments here are why I've decided to say goodbye. TrueSpace's future not being secure is of great concern to me and is actually hampering my 3D creativity. Also, I feel that my strong opinionated calls for answers are just alienating folks here (I know one of you really dislikes these posts of mine), and that was never my intension. I feel if I stay and the silence from Caligari remains, I'll just end up alienating everyone and I don't want that to happen.

I've a lot invested in TrueSpace so this wasn't an easy decision to reach, but I feel its for the best, for the community and for me. Of course, projects that are well underway in TrueSpace will continue, so I will not be removing the software from my PC, and once they are finished, I'm sure I'll continue to use TrueSpace for years to come. But I need a stable platform to start my new 3D projects on and a community in which I haven't alienated anyone.

At this moment, I don't know where the 3D path will take me...

To Roman and all at Caligari:

Thank you very much for everything. TrueSpace has allowed me to bring my imagination to life and I've had over a decade of fun with it. Of all the 3D software out there, none of them, that I've seen, can match TrueSpace for ease of use. Whatever new 3D software tool I settle on, I'll always have a place in my heart for TrueSpace. Whatever direction Caligari, and indeed TrueSpace, go in the future, I wish you the very best of luck and a prosperous future.

To the Caligari forum members:

Thank you for everything. We've had some great times over the past few years, and sure, we'd had some disagreements too, but hey, friendly banter is ok. Thank you also for continuing to inspire me with your amazing work, I only wish I knew the key to success to being on par with the amazing work you all produce. I will certainly be keeping an eye on your work for sure. Thanks again and I wish you the best for the future.

All the best,

Paul Boland.

Sorry to see you go Paul, but understand your desire for efficient work flow.

I wouldn't worry about alienating anyone.

I'm the worst of the lot on this blog.

Norm tolerates me like the stray dog coming into his yard watering his roses - so I know I'm mean spirited sometimes, but I still keep coming back. :)

Good luck and God Bless bro...

Peace.

Although you stated it was your last post,
I hope that you don't become a ghost.
I feel your pain, I truly do.
That's what trueSpace can do to you.
The text is clear and the software can comply.
more often than not you wish it would'nt die.
It always seems you've hit a wall
and that your project's sure to fall.
But truth be told you can succeed
however that could be from need.
It takes a long time to master the beast.
Before you can begin to savor the feast.
We'll all be sorry to see you go :(
Good luck wherever you decide to go. :)

Paul I'm sure most of us would always welcome your contributions in the future. If tS is no longer your focus then so be it but don't be a stranger y'hear?

Never say goodbye Paul, just see you later.

I am flattered that you name me as an inspiration but this is simply a case of you seeing something that 'switches you on' and you feel you have not achieved similar. If you could only see the early stuff I did (I never posted it, it was that bad) you would cringe. If tS is not flicking your switches then you are unlkely to get far with it.

Maybe it is time to try some new software; something that might appeal to your aspirations better and maybe provide some fun while learning.

Either way you will be missed but, I am sure, equally welcome in future. When I get Chonkyponk finished I will be sure to let you know but you are leaving at a time when I have a WIP section on the new images and I know how much you like it.

Sure you want to go? ;)

Either way, keep in touch mate...you will be missed...:o

Paul, sorry to hear your moving out. If for any reason I caused you to decide to leave just say the word and I'll be gone and not you. My promise.
I read your going away post and don't see one reason you should leave. You talk about your "block art" well what is wrong with that? Have you noticed Frank's work? Basic shapes to the max.
Everybody is saying goodbye to you and keeping the door open. Not me, I think you should stick around and start posting some blocks and see if we can help you improve. I don't believe in people bailing out. I can tell you love tS as we do.
You want to know the future of TS bit they won't respond? My guess is they are within two months of release. (I'll bet you if you want). But you better stick around to find out. Good people are needed here and your one of them.

Steinie, when someone says goodbye it is rude not to reply with the same...;)

Seriously though, I have spoken to Paul off the forums and he has been unhappy for some time. I personally did not feel it was right to try to persuade him to stay against his wishes. I hate to see anyone leave here and Paul is a great bloke but something is not right and I don't think he would be happy here...maybe in a while after sampling new experiences elsewhere.

We can only hope he hangs around and returns some time. Whatever he needs to 'get inspired' does not seem to be around here right now.

Hi Paul,

I found that leaving TrueSpace helps you to build perspective. I think in your case moving to a new software can help a lot. I had a similar problem where I'd gotten use to thinking and approaching problems in a certain way and wasn't able to grow as a 3D artist. I'd been using TS on and off since the TS3 days.

I gained access to Maya and 3DSMax for a while and following tutorials and forums for Maya in particular really helped me grow tremendously in my skills. Eventually it dawned on me that I could use those same techniques here in TS. Since I wanted to go pro and use the software to make money I needed my own full commercial license, I decided that TS w/ proTeam was the better investment for me. Since then I've been able to become part of the TS beta team and I continue to grow in my skills.

I'd recommend downloading the Maya PLE version (it's free). Eventually, you may find that you need to move on, but I'm willing to bet that learning another software will also help you realize how to better use the features that TrueSpace provides as well. Not to mention that the different approaches of the other software may help re-ignite your creativity.

The important thing to remember is that the software is a tool, if the tool isn't helping you achieve your task, then try out some different tools. ;) Some software is better at certain tasks than others, and it never hurts to have more tools in the tool chest.

Best of luck and remember we'd be happy to have you back anytime! :D

Paul,

Never really a need to say goodbye. As long as 3D is one of your interests, trueSpace will still have its place in your 3D toolset, and the forum members here always seem willing to listen and help. Best of luck, in any case.

Good luck to you Paul. Another prominent member gone...reminds me of Andy Kay. If you do not mind me asking, what software are you considering? C4D?

Sorry to see you go; I considered you one of the "Main TS'ers" around here. Good luck in wherever you end up. :)

trueSpace forum is probably the only place where people say goodbye when they are moving to other applications !
This tells how sensitive and human -in all meanings- trueSpacers are, and how the community behave as a family. So I am tempted to say that trueSpace spirit will stay in your heart whatever app you decide to work with today Paul.

Hi Paul - I hope you stick around long enough to follow this thread you've started.

I also sincerely hope it wasn't a result of my words that you feel alienated. That's the last thing I would want. I know I have challenged you in the recent past over your fears about the future of trueSpace and I do apologise if that contributed in any way to your feelings. My intentions, for what it's worth, although perhaps clumsily expressed, were always to try to cheer you.

I'll miss your input around here. You can usually pick up a 'vibe' from someone's posts and yours always seemed gentle, kind and thoughtful. When I read your posts I always heard them spoken in a gentle Irish brogue and they always left me with the feeling of 'there goes a nice guy'.

All the very best for your continuing 3d adventures and let me echo the sentiment of others here and say I'd love to see you back any time.

Take care out there

Hi Folks.

I just want to address this thread one last time and not leave it hanging in the air. Thank you very much to you all for such kind words, I have to say, I was moved by them, I honestly didn't think that I was that much a member of the community here, so it really is appreciated.

I just want to address my comment about alienating someone here. It was not aimed at any of you that I am aware of, however, since the start of this year, every strongly worded post I made to these forums saw an email sent to me, addressed from me, to me, which attacked me for making the post, some of them being quite hard to put behind me. I don't know who that phantom emailer is but it was he/she I was referring to by that comment and not any of the community members directly.

Thank you all again, your kind words are very much appreciated and again, i wish you all the very best with the future.

All the best,

Paul.
