Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow. Well tomorrow has come and the partially assembled quad-core is up next on the list.

The reason is that a series of domino-like events caused my dependable dual core while running a defragmentation to go tango uniform.

When re-booted I find this chkdsk that pops up for the 500 gig boot drive and then a never-ending loop of "something looking for an index $0 of something or other)

Then two USB ports go haywire as the keyboard and mouse no longer work.

So I put the cover up and the sits a capacitor partially lifted up from the motherboard and it was noticed there are several hot spots on the mother board as well.

The end result that all else is find, except that the 500 gig boot drive with all my executables is not longer bootable. Tedious file transfer time and re-installation of files. (grrrrrr)

Anyway, I shall finish up the Vista computer, it is needing a hard drive anyway and I have a volunteer soon as the files are transferred and the HD is reformatted.

Nothing fancy on the build, the typical quad - 6600, 4 gig mem, Vista er...whatever it is called, 32 bit. 8800 GT card - pretty bare bones.

No graphics time for me until I reinstall and do some stuff, but what has to be done has to be done.

My old pentium 4 still does forums just fine though. :D

Hope you manage to get fixed up soon - sounds a real pain in the proverbials...

Mind you, I can only feel a certain degree of sympathy wit hyour 'pretty bare bones' system... my home pc is a 500MHz P3 with 1GB Ram and a 32MB TNT2 graphics card... with Win98 and TS5.1 - living in the past ;)

Good luck! If you're like me this process will takes weeks - every few days just as you think you have everything installed, you'll go to just run that handy... oh its not installed. Now where is that CD?

Tom

Yeah and hoping I saved the serial numbers with the CD's. :D

On a good note, the monsterous Adobe software is re-installed.

Still looking for my trueSpace 7.51 number. Could have sworn it came packed with it, the last time I reinstalled.

Something I noticed noticed about this computer is that downloads are much faster. I just did a 60mb file in 48 seconds! I like that.

Anyways, back to the drudgery of re-installing and organzing data, blah blah, whine, complain...
