Update for Indigo v1.0.9 renderer

I don't know 99% of what Johny did to create this, so there's no real new functionality except it works with trueSpace7.6 and the latest stable Indigo build.

Clinton

I originally posted this in the announcement section, but I think it was the wrong place so here it is. Johny put all his work in the Indigo forums, so I followed his lead and put my changes there as well.

Sorry I seem to be missing something here. In what way does it work with tS? What do I need to dowload and from where?

Edit: Found it - I needed to be logged on at the Indigo forum in order to see the attachment to clintomans thread. (Much to my surprise I already am registered!) Good on you guys.

Here's the file. I wanted to talk to Johny first about why he never posted the script here in the cal forums and the reason for it no longer exists. The zipped scene file is attached here.

Clinton

Edit:

Here is the text from my post on the Indigo truesapce forums

Fixed the script so it would run with v1.0.9 of Indigo
Added file open dialog button because the current button didn't work for me
Added a tab with a file dialog to choose the Indigo exe file
Added code to run indigo after the igs file is exported
trueSpace cross product function not working so added math to compute vertex normals

Clinton

The new file dialog for the igs file is to the right of the igs text. It is an open dialog instead of a save dialog so it needs extra steps to work.
Click the button
Right Click in the list of files and choose new file(any type)
Name it what you want with an igs extension and say OK to the warning
Click on the new file to select it and set it as the file to write to

I downloaded and installed the 1.09 v of Indigo and opened the rsscn file in the link. The resulting requester wants you to find the location of the tS2i0.igs file. It isn't the Indigo directory with a bunch of other igs files. Where do I get it from?

That's the file that gets created when you run the script. File dialogs for truespace scripting are awkward because we only have an open file dialog(no save or save as).

Thanks for posting it here.

Oh and thanks for that little bit of information, I too was somewhat confused. :)

Thanks clintonman - sorry if I am easily confused. So I'm supposed hit the render button and magic just happens?

Unfortunately I get the attached error.

Edit: I'm not at home to double check - but maybe I have the wrong vers of Indigo - I note the error info is saying Indigo 1.09v0.00 - I think mine may be 1.09.03 or something like that. Would that be the reason I couldn't get it to work?

I got two errors, the first is what was the save dialog box opener, that's not new apparently.

The other is when I press export, see below.

Apparently the name was too long, and therein lay the problem.

This is what it essentially amounted to:
"C:\Users\Robert\Documents\3D & Related\indigo_v1.0.9_3\indigo.exe C:\Users\Robert\Documents\3D & Related\indigo_v1.0.9_3\testscenes\tS2i0.igs"

Thereby breaching the string limit. :o :p

So now it resides in "C:\indigo" until I find a better place. :D

How many caharacters is the max?

My guess would be at 64 characters, at least that's what it seems to come down to. I had a similar problem with deleting an obscure file with a ridiculous name, it wouldn't copy, cut, or move because it's name was so long on top of the incredible folder depth.

Generally you won't need to worry about breaking the string limit, but my folder path was too deep. So deep in fact that Indigo couldn't load one of the textures.

As long as Indigo is kept anywhere from 0-3 folders down it should be fine, but don't quote me on that. If not it can always be moved.

I don't know if it works with 1.09.03 or not. The tS2Indigo1.0.9V0.00 is refering to the scene and object name. The error is saying that it cant create file based on the text in the first field. I have indigo installed to "C:\indigo". When you unzip it it will have version information included in the name(indigo_v1.0.9_3).

...

let me get back to you with some screen shots, i'm starting to lose my way

If I go to the Indigo download page:

http://www.indigorenderer.com/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=64&Itemid=99

The version under 1.09 actually reads as: indigo_v1.0.9_3. This is the 32bit vers. Downloadable underneath is one labelled indigo_x64_v1.0.9_2 which is a 64 bit vers. Is either usable? I have the first installed but I didn't put it on the top of the drive - rather I had it in the "Program Files" folder. I'll move it when I get home and see if I get better results.

Ok got it worked out. Here are the steps I took to set it all up.

Download indigo from their download page:

http://www.indigorenderer.com/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=64&Itemid=99

Unzip it and you get something like the first picture. You get an indigo_v1.0.9_3 folder inside another indigo_v1.0.9_3 folder. Copy the inner folder to the c: drive and rename it to just c:\indigo.

By default the script will write the indigo file to "C:\indigo\testscenes\tS2i0.igs" shown in the second image. The second image also shows the file dialog button that works for me. The file dialog on the left side doesnt' work for me but I left it in in case it works for someone else.

When you push export the igs file is written to the file "tS2i0.igs" and then the indigo renderer is called. It opens the file and creates the render. It will continue to improve the render until you stop it. It will create a png type file in "c:\indigo\renders".

The last picture shows a tab on the script where you can tell it the location of the indigo on your machine, in case you put it somewhere besides "c:\indigo"

Here are some notes for using the truespace open file as a create/save as dialog.

image1: Right click in a blank portion of the file list and choose new and then any file type. I chose "open document text" but anything should work

image2: rename the file to whatever file name you want (mytest.igs) and then click yes when the warning comes up.

Image3: click on the newly renamed file to select it and press Open

Hopefully, Caligari will add a "new file" ability to scripting when the patch finally comes out.

As long as you have Indigo installed in the c:\indigo position it seems to work.

I notice that the image map of colours and numbers on the cube doesn't render and the statement in the LE about placing textures in here and IndigoMaterialName obj inside target mesh seems very mysterious and obscure to me. Also the gold effect is nice but it always seems faceted even if I tick the smoothing box - if I subdiv it and hit the collapse history so its just mesh it loses the gold material.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not complaining about the good work others are doing - I'm just trying to figure out whats going on and how its supposed to work at this stage.

you are not allon with this question, I'm searching too for the how, why, aha, think the more will do that the earlyer we'll get answers or enhancements of the script. :)

What I can say though is that there is a significant difference in render speed compared to Vray.:(

I was wondering if this might be a mistake noted in the capture with the red arrow, whereas it looks like it is missing else

Yeah, the other ofl.write statements are preceded by else. Although from the looks of it that is just a text output when in Indigo.

You can change it but it will only add just a line of output text, if anything. At least that's what it looks like.

don't know if already mentioned, materials how, why, ....

Inside the IME material node you find a few predefined materials, what I did is

1

- use Ctrl C to kopy the ...Phong, renamed it to ...PhongChanged

- modified the params, like an image as texture and same for Bump Map plus some of the other numerical values

2

- inside the sphere I clicked on Rescan IME Bank for....

3

- now could select the new material

I just copied the IndigoMaterialName into my Objects folder and then simply droped it inside the sphere object, or any other object I create with trueSpace

Still working on it. I had to figure out how to use the SDK to create a plugin before I could move forward with this.

List of changes:

Added D3D scene instanced materials to define some Indigo materials
Diffuse, Diffuse Texture, Phong and Phong Texture materials
Smoothing is controlled in the material instead of the mesh object for D3D materials

Reads the camera field of view for a better preview - NOT YET, thought it was working but found it is not

New scene file sample with a D3D material example

Zip Contents:

Clintons3Dplugin.rsx plugin file
D3D materials for Indigo
ts2Indigo April2009.RsObj
ts2IndigoSceneApril2009.RsScn

The plugin is the same as the unreal PSK plugin but with D3D scene material processing added. To install follow the instructions on the first half of this page:

http://www.clintons3d.com/truespace/unrealImportExport/index.html

Scene material instancing must be on to use the D3D Indigo materials.
check manual : 5.3.4 Workflow - Material Instancing: Scene Mode

The system still works without the plugin, but only uses the original Indigo materials.

Cool thanks, I know I'm interested in as many options as are made available.
Especially since Vray is discontinued. :(
