I work as a multimedia designer creating CG content for our clients in the industrial business. Over the years I been using TrueSpace 6.6 and been happy so far. Lately I decided to upgrade to TrueSpace 7.5 and I am writing a proposal to my management to justify the upgrade. My question is did anyone using 7.5 have any issues importing objects created in earlier versions of TrueSpace. Over the years we have created a small library of 3D objects like cranes, pipelines, riggings and such to use in our products. I don't care if we have to re-paint them over again with the new shaders. Just to be able to bring in the basic models would save us a lot of time. And would be a good arguement for us to upgrade.

Only had a few objects from 6.6 but could load them through the Modeler side of 7.5.

Suggest you download the demo version and just try yourself to get a quick answer. That is also a good chance to see how real time view works in Workspace.

I haven't seen any problems loading old models into 7.5.

But going back the other way 7.5 -> 6.6 seems to be giving people problems in certain situations.

if you don't need to keep the old material there's always the LUUV plugin for exporting/importing in OBJ format, which preserves your UV mapping as well.

You can easily import tS6.6 models (or those from earlier versions of tS) into tS7.5.

The one "issue" relates to hierarchies - if there is a deeply nested hierarchy, then this will be very slow to be passed across the bridge (that is, moved from the Model aspect which is essentially tS6.6, to the workspace aspect which is where all the new tS7.5 tools are).

To avoid this, you can either change the hierarchy (the best solution), or disable the bridge when loading which will make it load fast, then enable the bridge and wait for it to be moved over to the workspace, then save it from the workspace to a tS7.5 library.

Simplifying the hierarchy is the best solution though. Other than this, there are no other issues - shaders will render the same for Lightworks, you may need to repaint for V-Ray or real-time, etc, but those are very minor details. I can certainly load up and use my tS6.6 objects with ease, and the only time needed is if I want to start adding things to my scene for new features (eg adding HDRI, or using new V-Ray shaders, etc).

HTH!

Model side of tS7.5 IS ts6.6 so there should be no problems at all. You may notice some differences using the workspace as this relies on DX shaders but nothing else should be a problem.

Of course moving over to Vray might cause some headaches initially...;)

You should download the trial and test importing some of your models. I haven't had any trouble bringing any model formats in. I have opened .cob files from the model side and used the bridge to get it to the workspace side. Truespace 7.5 is very different than 6.6 but you can always use the model side to keep your current pipeline than start doing some things in the workspace side to get ready for the big switch over in the future. Unless you want to stick with 6.6 for a long time, getting 7.5 is a good way to go in my opinion.

Try downloading the demo and importing your models. you will have to open your .cob files on the model side. If you want them to be in the workspace too use the bridge. Shouldn't be a problem.

Edit: sorry for posting twice. When I was posting only the original message was showing and my post disappeared.

I've not had any problems importing anything i did in 6.6, but i wasn't dealing with a large library of objects. To import something from the older version go into the model side of 7.5 and go to the 6.6 menu and import it, always works ok for me. hope this helps

This is the OP. Thanks for all the suggestions. Yes! I will certainly download the demo and then report my results to management. I will import from the model side as most suggest and then use the bridge. It also did not occur to me about the hierarchies as one poester suggested I should simplify them. This may involve some work on my part to get all our models to look right but it is a way better option than modeling everything all over again. Next time I post I hope to be a 7.5 user.

I forgot to say that I have been using tS since version 1 and, as I have built up many characters and models for my stories, I still find myself loading objects from earlier versions but tS6.6 was where I was most productive.

Not had any problems yet but, admittedly, I work mostly in model side with some dabbling in Vray...:D

trueSpace7 does come with a plugin "MeshCollapse" that makes flattening hierarchies very easy.

Ah yes! Earlier versions of TrueSpace. Myself I use the Luuv plugin to bring in obj files with no problem in 6.6. We do have one modeler who insists on using TS version 3. Set in his ways I suppose. So I open up his cob files in 6.6 and do what I want with them with no problems what so ever.
