We looked at Truespace awhile back, and went with a competitors product, because we could not get anyone from Caligari to answer any of our questions. We have a new project that looks like it might be a good fit for Truespace, and once again gave them a call, once again they were unable or unwilling to assist us. Maybe before we move on and purchase something else, someone out there can tell me if Truespace will work for us ...

We want to do some kinetic engineering, like, pullys/motors/gears which we could put or attach to an object, to visualize the mechanical aspects of different configurations in an attempt to 'design' the best solution. Can truespace do this? if so, would we need any plugins or is the core product capable? We downloaded the demo, but it looks like the learning curve is a tad longer than we expected, so are there any 'fastpaths' ... We would very much appreciate ANY feedback you could provide... many thanks

Intersting, since we are actually very active in answering queries and questions (as seen here in the forums), and I have to admit I've not heard this question so not sure who you were in touch with.

The answer is "depends" - you could not instantly drop in a gear, a rope, and another gear and have it spin the gear that pulls the rope and turns the other gear.

While physics is supported with forces etc, that connection via circular ropes or chains would not be instantly creatable.

However, it should not be hard to harness the existing physics in combination with in-built scripting and in-built animation to create the desired results. How complex that would be would depend on just what you wanted to do - fairly straightforward to just visualize it, somewhat more complex if you want forces to be "calculated" by the simulation, and very complex if you wanted the forces to be accurate.

Should you require assistance with tech questions, feel free to contact me directly at thomas@caligari.com, I can assure you that I am always willing to answer questions as best as I can :)

HTH!

The ability to do what you want is possible in truespace7.5 You do not need any addons or plugins, but you will need to learn to program scripts, which use the jscript language. I would recommend you buy the introduction to scripting course for truespace at http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts5/Courses/IntroToScripting.asp?Cate=Training&Subcate=Fundamental

And also some of the other courses on scripting, such as scripting a clock, etc. Find them by clicking on training tab on the www.caligar.com web site.

And if you have any troubles, post in the forum scriptorium and someone will help you there. I am not to sure its good we have a visitor topic, because it leads to visitors asking questions that would of best been posted in another topic, and the persons that could reply to their question probably does not read the visitor topic much. If the script topics do not show for visitors, then its best you become a member, and repost your questions in scriptorium topic.

I was not aware that someone who does not have the product can register.

But in any case, the Visitor Area is for just this kind of question. and I think Tom answered very well. He is always glad to help people get to know what they can before they buy. :D

Tom answeard the question good, but if it was posted in the scriptorium, you probably would have someone give you some scripts to do exactly what you want to do, etc., so thats why I say your question would be better posted there.

Ah.. but Dr. Williams does not seem to own the product... yet. I encourage his company to invest in it though. It's well worth the price!
