Hi

Can someone explain why my truespace 7.6 wont open up. All i get is a notice saying

Run time error

Program: C\truespace76\ts\ts7.exe

This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

Please contact the applications support team for more information.

Please help. Thanks.

Try deleting default.ctx, typically found in C:\trueSpace7\tS folder. Then restart TrueSpace.

I installed TS 7.6 but it didn't work, it shows a message which says:

There was an error during Workspace rendering

Player rendering is unable to continue in current state

.....

Error information text:

Thread R_Render Thread : Failed to create the any D3D device (HAL or REF). 3D Engine cannot continue on device without 3D acceleration....

3D acceleration ? What does it mean ?

I thought that my old Celeron in my office was responsible for this error so I installed on my Core 2 Duo with 1 MB ram but it didn't run as well. I can't remember what kind of error it showed but it was different, I think.

What do I need to run this version of TS.

Thanks.

3D acceleration is the means by which the processor talks to the graphics card, via either OpenGL or DirectX.

Sounds like you do not have DirectX installed - could you run DXDiag and see what it says? (Just use Run, and then enter DXDIAG; or type DXDIAG into the search box in Vista).

If you could let us know what video cards you have installed too, that would be helpful. tS requires a card that is DirectX9.0c compatible to run well, and if the card doesn't support that (or is much older, eg DirectX7) then tS may simply not run at all.

Thank you Tom,

Well I checked my computer and the DirectX 9.0c is installed. The video is the built-in video adapter Intel GMA X3000 with 256 of ram. I have XP sp2.

The error is a common : trueSpace has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. etc, etc...

This really dissapointed me, I was so eager to try TS 7.6.

Not sure which of the two unregistereds you were there, Jalm :) That set up sounds fine for DX9.0c so I suspect you are unregistered 1 and not unregistered 2 with the acceleration error message.

No specific ideas on what to suggest there with a generic error message, other than trying to install as admin, run as admin, run in compatibility mode, and hold CTRL on start up to set it to a default configuration (the usual suspects). Let me know if any of those make any difference.

NB I get a similar acceleration/D3D device error when starting up tS; I find that the programme will still open and I can use Modelside but not workspace.

Running dxdiag appears to show Directx9c installed but under the displays section shows that Direct3D and DirectDraw are unavailable.

I'm running a QuadroFX1000 under XP, so I don't know if th eproblem is down to the card; my sysadmin has reinstalled card drivers and DirectX with no joy. I'm not massivley worried as I can still use Modelside (which is what I really want for now anyway) but it would be nice to get it sorted.

Well I'm back at my office and I ran the DXDiag on my Celeron and it seems that all work properly, the DirectX 9.0c is installed, the DirectDraw, Direct3D and Texture accelerator (whatever they are ;) ) are enable, all the video tests are satisfactory...but TS doesn' t work yet....:(

Tom, what do you mean with "unregistered 1" ?

Thanks.

Hi Jalm. Welcome to the forums!

Unregistered 1 / 2 meant, you were not yet registered with a username for the forums here when you posted the original message. But now that you've registered, we can see your forum name (Jalm) when you post.

The DirectX acceleration basically means, hardware acceleration of DirectX graphics is enabled. Which means, your video card is handling all real time graphics processes (calculations, shading, etc.), rather than the CPU doing that, along with all the other tasks it has to perform.

Hardware acceleration of graphics processing is much faster than the CPU performing the processing.

It sounds like you may not be using your video card for graphics processing; rather, your onboard (i.e. on the motherboard) graphics processing chip is performing the processing. I don't believe that type of processing is very optimal. Of course, I could be totally wrong on this. But you may need to go into the BIOS on startup to change the video processor From the onboard processor To the video card. Have you configured your bios before?

Also, 256 MB of video RAM is not enough to run truespace.

As Tom pointed out, if you could tell us what video card you have installed on your computer, that would also help the forum members troubleshoot the issue.

The unregistered 1 and unregistered 2 was referring to what seem to be two bugs posted by two unregistered people. One bug is just that tS fails to start with a generic message. A second unregistered post stated that there was a message about no 3D acceleration, a different bug, and I am guessing it is from a different person.

Your bug appears to be just the generic message and you have not received the error relating to 3D acceleration?

Thanks!

Tom

Oopps! I thought that the unregistered thing had to do with the digital firms or something about hardware on XP. :p I am the second one, the 3D and the common error.

My first posting was in this section that I found looking for info on the net. I didn't know that there was a non-registered members section where anybody could make postings. Blessings!!

I had tried for months to get a membership until I got it precisely that same night but I had already posted my messages under "unregistered" the first one and later I noted that one can use the name so I posted a second message with my name, the serrated borders thing. I'm very glad that I can access these forums at last.

Thanks frootee, I'm using the Intel mb built-in video card but the bios only offers 256mb of video ram. If it's not enough to run TS7.6 it seems that I'll need another card. But how much ram do I need then ? any already well known compatible model, brand ?

So I have to forget TS7.6 on my office computer, it has a 8mb agp video card...:p

Thanks to everbody for your patience.
