I was a member on the gamespace forums, Just found out today that those forums are no longer up and running. I have not been on the net in a couple months till today.
Anyway I just noticed that truespace is now free..... Is Caligari giving up on the product or do they have something really good up their sleeve that is coming out? If not what's the catch as I did'nt see anything written like it is a trial run. I like gamespace and still use it and have noticed that on the Game Creators web site they are no longer offering the product.
Is caligari themselves giving up? I hope not....I still like their products and as I said I still use gamespace itself. And seeing that the forums are no longer up does that also mean there will never be a gamespace 2. It would be a shame to see caligari take a bad dive. |

Hi Tatts,
Microsoft bought Caligari and is backing (financially) the release of 7.6 for free so that it can be used as a content generator for Virtual Earth. It's the full commercial version of the application that's been released and the same Caligari guys are here working hard on making TrueSpace even better.
GameSpace has been discontinued. It was a "light" version of TrueSpace and with TrueSpace now free, there's no need for it. X format with bones animation has been added to Workspace side. A plugin SDK is expected shortly which will allow game developers to write more format exporters as well. |

Really? so I may as well just get rid of my gamespace then. I mean that is very cool. And I take it the models and animation would still work with DarkBasic Pro?
I noticed that the video tutorials are now free as well.
Man I don't know who to thank, I guess I could just say thanks too both Caligari and Microsoft. This truly is one very nice surprise to see. |

Best way to get answers is a search on the forums, and a Google search :) You will find many write ups on why tS is free, and that will let you catch up on all the news.
A patch is in the works, so as you can see Caligari are not giving up on the product.
HTH!

Not all of the exporting formats of GameSpace are currently available in TrueSpace 7.6... since the format exporters in GameSpace are plugins you might be able to load those plugins on the model side into 7.6 but not having a copy of GameSpace I can only theorize on that... :) You could always export from TS 7.6 (model side) to a COB file and import that into GameSpace and export them from there to the gameformat of your choice, however I think the new bone system won't work with that so you would have to do the animating in model space...
But since its free and GameSpace and TrueSpace 7.6 can run along side eachother I would say just play around with it and see how you work best to achieve what you want! :) |

Just a quick question Tom, and I am posting in case it helps anyone else.
I am chuffed at the fact that my students can now get tS7.6 for free instead of salivating over my laptop while they run 3.1...:D
However, it is OK to install onto a server at school so that 20-25 PC's can access the program in a teaching room?
I really hope so as not every student has access to their own PC. |

For multiple licensing you have to contact customer services - as noted in the tS install license, it is for one machine only. Note that multiple licenses doesn't cost money, it's just that we have to store the registration information appropriately for support purposes.

No problem! Naturally educational establishments, be they schools or whole districts, may want to be installing tS, and we want to support that, just we need extra data for supporting many installations compared to the information collected in a basic registration.
Same applies for any educational use (or commercial in a company), just get in touch and we'll sort it out! Let everyone know who may be interested :)
Thanks!

Will there be a version of truePlay or trueSpace 'light' that could be redistributed? I'm wondering if users can script a solution using trueSpace and make it available to the public and/or a possible commercial product. Will Caligari be exploring any future growth of their product base and availability? I'd be curious to know if they intend to pursue a playback engine, or some sort of free redistribution product (plugin, player, or something ala Flash/Shockwave/Viewpoint/etc). |

Hard to know what Caligari is up to these days, but I would suspect they will release a new version of truePlay after the patch release. The new version of tP is released a little while after a release of tS since it's basically a cut down version that only plays scenes.
I'm hoping that in the future they release truePlay simultaneously with tS releases though. It's been a LONG time since we had a version of tP available. It will never catch on if it's only available every other year. :(
