Hi Fellow scriptors. Let's see if we can work with Caligari to get this straightened out.

Cant be scripted, its part of the default scene that tP loads when it first runs. It will need patching to change that scene :) Also the fix is already in place for the next release, I am told by developers.

HTH!

Oh hey Froo,

Tom is right above of course, although there is a nice enhancement we can script for truePlay (any version) very easily which could address this problem easily and immediately as well as add additional cool potentials to truePlay anytime we want to.

TruePlay, when it opens, uses a default opening scene in it's install path which has the problematic link there which must be replaced.

We can easily load that same default scene into trueSpace7.51 and either change the link ourselves or far better... completely transform that whole default scene into something fabulous to explore which also can link directly to any portal in truePlaces, and soon to our own Community rented spaces.

We can do that with scripted objects in the scene, and then save the scene out as a new name for install into the truePlay install directory as an alternative scene to the default scene. Then they open truePlay, use the File Load option and open that scene. From there they can go wherever we provide links for them to go, either in truePlaces or the upcoming rentable portals.

We can also do a lot to enhance that scene beyond what it now does, like having it open local files and programs, web pages, videos, whatever!:D

Please refrain from doing anything fabulous to my local files or programs.

LOL!

Thanks for the vote of confidence there!

This would be a user installable option, nothing more.

Yo Froo...

It's all done. I wanna dress it up a tad though first.

I also have a nice object that resets anyone's trueSpace7.5x Default Network Server and Portal Node Settings to the Scriptorium now. It won't work when loaded into truePlay though, I have a different one I'm still playing with that already does that too.

It's another "Easel Object," but this one you just load into a blank scene (or into whatever scene you want) while in trueSpace7.5x, and then when you mouse-over the image it highlights and when you click it it resets your default Network Nodes to The Scriptorium and brings up the Login Dialog to Enter Shared Space.

I'm gonna pop the trueSpace object into the Tuesday thread right now in the Collaboration area.

A few more enhancements and the truePlay version will follow.

This is an excellent idea! .. Every multi-location needs a 'lobby' It should be really easy to get into, and quickly become familiar .. with changes being only in the offerings of places to go from there.

The lobby of a convention center or hotel is always findable, attractive when you get there, and has signs (links) pointing to the meeting suites, galleries and convention halls one can visit from there will be whatever is current, plus signs (links) to some attractive, but less changing, favorite haunts like cafes and restaurants and lounges where impromptu meetings and social encounters can take place.

Personally, I think that first place should be a hub, beautiful and fun looking with pleasing but non-interactive eye candy - probably not really a place linger, but rather a place to choose a destination.

having it open local files and programs, web pages, videos, whatever sounds interesting and probably a great feature - a sort of local destinations option? - as long as it's easy to understand and use, and pretty much bombproof . The experience of opening up truePlayer should feel secure and safe, inspiring confidence in the user particularly with regard to anything 'local'! (hence spacekdet's comments, I think ;)).

If you can figure out a way to look at GameTap's interface, you'll see an 'uber' example of this. Theirs is extensive, and is updated fairly frequently, however they are serving more than 800 games (destinations) and also videos and advertising, so that's not surprising. If you'd like to see what that's like, but can't view it without spending money on it.. let me know I'll share some screenies of it (I would not expect ours to look like it of course, but it may give some ideas of functionality)

Well, this is just me blathering, but I hope at least some of it might be helpful...

^_^

Yep, pretty much what I had in mind too.

Nothing elaborate really, just a glimpse of how easy it would be to make a nice "Desktop Portal" interface out of truePlay.

Kind of rings a bell actually....;)

http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=4082 (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=4082)

Not everyone wants a nice place to play on their own desktops apparently, and some would prefer chalkboards to computers as well probably, but to each his own.

Anyhow, I'm taking a stab at a simple one with just a few of the objects scripted to illustrate a bit of the potential. If people would rather use their horse and buggy to go to the same destinations they will still be able to.:p

Don't take it personally; just because you have no ill intentions doesn't mean that someday, someone wouldn't be able to exploit this sort of local control for malicious reasons. All it would take is one incident and the whole program could be tainted as a security risk. No one wants to see that.
A trust once broken is impossible to restore.

All that being said, I'm glad to see you working on a fix for the busted login for truePlay.

Patches?! We doan need no steenkin' patches!

There's the truePlay version ready to rock.

The script to launch local programs was always inside the actual truePlay default scene itself, and it STILL is. It is a visual basic script inside a trueSpace created scene which opens the net connection for truePlay when a truePlay user clicks on that round Forum image on the wall to go to truePlace. The danger was always there, I'm enhancing things here, not opening Pandora's Box... this is just a nice alternative to a broken default scene.

I do agree though that every scripted scene, whether available on the forums here or inside shared space itself has the potential of being disasterous if a malicious person created it or altered it. The fact is that anyone doing it online would be nailed right away because they are known to Caligari when they register either trueSpace or truePlay, and their IP is logged no doubt since every online server I have ever seen does that.

I don't click things in shared space until I read the scripts attached to them in the LE, but triggers can get you anywhere and anytime without you having to click. What keeps shared space safe is the registrations, if truePlay ever becomes a web plugin it had better continue to require them or we will all be in trouble. I'm sure it will though, and if anything security will become tighter.
