Howdy all,

Was just curious about a few things. I know that quite a few of you are born artists and all and I'm pretty good at seeing things that can be improved when it's not my own work.

So... I figured I'd ask all of you how you brought your ideas from mere thoughts to the point of actually starting a project.

Thought this might be a good poll question but please chime in with more if you like.

hi Prof:

That is the million dollar question. As for the poll, I'd prolly have to click all of them.

Instead of going into a long drawn out rambling on my methods, I thought I would post a little bit of history from the tSML Archives.

This link is an online tutorial of sorts that I did for the SRV image I created. It has 14 parts to it and goes from conception of idea to completion of the final product. All of the picture links in it are probably broken by now, but what I feel is more important and to the point is how I conceived the idea and how it evolved as it went along. To get to each section, just click the "Next in Topic" line at the top of each page.

Hopefully, this might answer a few of your questions, if nothing else it shows how I create stuff.

Enjoy

I usually don't even start if I can't see the end result in my head.

I get my inspirations from other 3D works or reallife.

My target is to visualise things that looks impossible or very hard to do in Truespace.

My personal problem, i never finish my works how you can see in my Image trash folder www.vizualizer.de/images ;)

I have told Vizu already that he should submit an image to the monthly contest but he will not listen to me. (Maybe because I am American. Just kidding.) ...but really - I agree that he has some skill and would do well in the competition.

As Frank Lloyd Wright once said, "I just shake them out of my sleeve." :D Seriously, though I generally do have a mostly completed idea in my head before I begin, though sometimes it is refined as I'm actualy modeling it. Other times I've had to sketch a couple of things on paper just to solidify the idea a bit or consider detailing options. Even then, however, one sketch is quite often sufficient for me to decide which way I'm going with something. If I don't have a pretty solid idea right from the start, I usually sleep on it until I do (at least for personal projects anyway).

I just started 3D, so forgive my noobness.

When I did/do 2D animation, it takes me about 40-60 percent of my total work time on the project to do the research. Depending on the project of course.

I get distracted. For instance...

if I want to demonstrate how to use a tool. I'll research the tool, but something catches my eye such as "googling" and some topic comes up like "fat man severs fingers while making soup with acme wrench impact tool."

As far as the theme of the idea, I like humor. I put ideas down on paper and think what would happen if. Like my cartoon character Otto Pilot (pronounced Pelow) has a house made from car parts including a garage that was a former Uhaul truck. :)

Otto is making his way to the 3D world. Making fuzz, hair and all that stuff is exciting and daunting! :)

Though I do have a quite good idea of what I want to do in my projects, I do a lot of research on the internet and in real life for my projects. Sketching out things helps a lot. Not only for reference, but also for getting specific with what needs to be included. Ideas are always a bit vague, putting them to paper helps.

In your poll I voted for 'other' as I often use a combination of the options you suggest plus at least a couple of my own.

The only thing I NEVER do is sketch an idea out - I know lots of folk do but I do 2d paintings without turning on my computer, I do computer art without picking up a pencil. This is not a hard and fast rule it's just something I've not felt a need for. I tend to seperate the two technologies in my mind.

The overall concept often simply appears in my minds eye - sometimes even when I'm sleeping (does anyone else ever dream in wireframes?) - but only after a theme or topic takes my fancy.

Sometimes I want to teach myself some new aspect of 3d and the picture evolves out of my growing understanding.

For modelling purposes I will search for good reference pics (google is your friend!) which lead to the model construction which then suggests a scene for the model to appear in.

There are also recurring themes in my work - especially now as I'm building images to provide pictorial material for a story.

At the end of the day if I'm not satisfied with my output I'll either keep tweaking till I am or post the WIP here or at Renderosity for expert friendly advice from the tS community. I also have a backlog of uncompleted scenes and projects that I dip into when I'm feeling stuck with something.

So, to sum up I often see the whole scene (or at least the gist of it) all in my head but I also allow the scene to where it wants to some degree whilst seeking to specifically challenge my skills - I like to keep my bases covered and the best way to avoid becoming an old dog is to keep learning new tricks:o

I tend to see stuff in my head too, although I do gather reference pics for individual objects though, which occasionally I'll modify as & when necessary. Take for example my nurbs head I'm working on. I searched & searched for a front & profile pic of the person, but only suitable 1s I could find were no bigger than about 110 pixels tall, & not brilliant quality, so I traced over it in PSP9 to create a [crude but easier to work with than the low res colour original] lineart showing the main outlines of his features, which is what I'm using as my references in tS.
